Joshua Lawrence Barnett (born November 10, 1977) is an American mixed martial artist and professional wrestler who competes in the heavyweight division of the UFC where he is a former UFC Heavyweight Champion. He is the first and current Metamoris Heavyweight Champion. He has also won the King of Pancrase Openweight Championship and was a finalist in the PRIDE 2006 Openweight Grand Prix and the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Championship. Barnett claims a mixed martial arts record of "over 50-7" when both sanctioned and unsanctioned bouts are counted. He has also competed in Affliction, DREAM and Impact FC.
As of January 26, 2016, he is #8 in the official UFC heavyweight rankings.
Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Barnett had a troubled childhood and often got into fights. He was put into anger management programs at a young age and learned to cope with his anger by participating in athletics. Barnett attended Ballard High School, where he excelled at wrestling, football, and also trained in kickboxing. After seeing UFC 4 as a sophomore, he decided that he wanted to be a mixed martial arts fighter. Barnett had originally attended the University of Montana to play football for the school as a walk-on, but decided not to play the sport for the university. At the recommendation of an instructor at Montana, Barnett went to train at the dojo of Jim Harrison. Although he did not have the money for classes, he received training in exchange for helping with maintenance and labor at the dojo.
Josh is a diminutive of the given name Joshua. "Josh" may also refer to:
Daniel Ryan Cormier (born March 20, 1979) is an American mixed martial artist and former Olympic wrestler. He competes in the light heavyweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, where he is the current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. As of December 21, 2015, he is #10 in official UFC pound-for-pound rankings and ranked as the #2 light heavyweight and #9 pound-for-pound fighter in the world by Sherdog. Cormier was also the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion.
Cormier is the son of Joseph and Audrey Cormier. He has an older brother named Joseph, a sister named Felicia and a younger brother named Ferral. When Cormier was eight, his father was shot and killed on Thanksgiving Day in 1986 by the father of his second wife.
In high school at Northside High, Cormier won 3 Louisiana state championships. After 9th grade Cormier only lost twice, both times by injury default. His final high school record was 101-9, with 89 of his victories coming by a fall. Twice he was voted the most outstanding wrestler of the state tournament. In 1995 Cormier won a bronze medal in the world championships in Greco-Roman Wrestling, in the cadet (15–16 years old) division. Cormier was also an all-state football player in high school at the linebacker position, and had a fast 4.5 time on the 40 yard dash. Cormier was offered a scholarship to play football at LSU, but declined in order to continue to pursue wrestling.
Catch wrestling is a classical hybrid grappling style that was developed in Britain circa 1870 by J. G. Chambers, then later refined and popularised by the wrestlers of travelling funfairs who developed their own submission holds, or "hooks", into their wrestling to increase their effectiveness against their opponents. Catch wrestling derives from a number of different styles, the English styles of Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling,Cornwall and Devon wrestling,Lancashire wrestling, Irish collar-and-elbow wrestling, Greco-Roman, , styles of the Indian subcontinent such as Pehlwani and Iranian styles such as Varzesh-e Pahlavani. The training of some modern submission wrestlers, professional wrestlers and mixed martial artists is founded in catch wrestling.
In 1871, J. G. Chambers, of aquatic and pedestrian celebrity, and sometime editor of Land and Water, endeavored to introduce and promote a new system of wrestling at Little Bridge Grounds, West Brompton, which he denominated, "The Catch-as-catch-can Style." Unfortunately, the new idea met with little support at the time, and a few years afterwards Chambers was induced to adopt the objectionable fashion of allowing the competitors to wrestle on all-fours on the ground. This new departure was the forerunner of the total abolition of the sport at that athletic, and within a short period the wrestling, as an item in the program.

Hello Ronin Army, (steps out of chrome Helicopter in a robe)... I have a very special video for you this week. This is a detailed breakdown of some of the techniques that Josh Barnett used in his match against Dean Lister. I feel like many people still look at Josh's catch wrestling style and sorta think, "well, he's basically just doing jiu jitsu still" without appreciating how different his fundamental positions are or even see some of the more technical aspects of his cacc style. This is my breakdown of that match and is for educational purposes only. Enjoy you son's of bitches.... Enjoy. The music in the video is Instrumental Core - The angels among deamons Two steps from hell - heart of courage footage is from metamoris. I do not own the rights to the video or the music.

When I commit to and prepare for a competition, I know that if someone else is working harder than me and dedicating themselves to this sport more than I am, they will defeat me. That is exactly why I compete...to preserve the integrity of this sport. Josh Barnett is heralded by the MMA and submission grappling fan base (who have had little to no exposure to catch wrestling) as the greatest catch wrestler alive. His fans probably don't even realize that he has never competed in a single catch wrestling match...ever! They simply believe he is the best because someone started the rumor one day (probably Josh Barnett) and everyone started believing it. Its like an old urban legend. But, in terms of actual catch wrestling, Josh is a legend in his own mind. And he would like to maintain...
Way before the public knew of him, Josh Barnett usually found himself in a fight. Finding wrestling in high school, he fell in love with the sport in all of it's many facets and is a true ambassador of the catch as can style. Most people assume that his background stops there, but nothing could be further from the truth, as we found out while on this photo shoot for Issue 32. A true student of martial arts, Josh is more than well versed in the understanding and techniques of Greco-roman, freestyle, laamb, professional, and any other style of wrestling that you can think of; not to mention he has a plethora of knowledge in sambo, judo, jiu-jitsu (black belt), and a slew of other martial arts. Josh has taken all the knowledge he's gathered over the years, molded all of it together and began ...
