In 18th-century Europe, the Grand Tour was de rigueur for the upper class as they traveled through great cities, often accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, to see important works of art and experience other cultures. Through analyzing different styles and understanding the forces that shaped art and architecture, this course will explore artistic treasures of
France's and Italy's famous cities, as well as the High Renaissance, Baroque/Rococo, and Antiquity. Recreate the Grand
Tourist's experience of artistic style and beauty.

Rousham nestled deep in the Oxfordshire countryside is, to the eyes of many, the epitome of an English arcadia. But the gardens, designed by the eccentric architect, landscape and furniture designer William Kent in the early part of the 18th century, makes unquestionable references to the Grand Tour and Italy. The result is that Rousham achieves one of the most successful mixes of the benign English bucolic together with sophisticated Italian classicism.
This short excerpt shows the extent of this influence both within the gardens and landscape and also within the ravishing Rousham House itself.

This is a multi-touch proof of concept video for an exhibition at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon campus opening in September of 2010. The Microsoft Surface application presents Rome during the Age of the Grand Tour through the eyes of Giuseppe Vasi, an extraordinary18th century artist of urban landscapes. His 10 volumes of city views, the Magnificenze di Roma (the Splendors of Rome) are carefully located--geo-referenced--within the city aided by the 1748 Map of Rome by Giambattista Nolli, a contemporary architect and master cartographer. The Surface will promote in depth study of Rome by visually integrating the work of these artists and then comparing them with modern day photography and satellite imaging. This unique digital experience will reveal Rome over her long history providing a rich learning environment for diverse audiences. This video captures how visitors might use such a device.
The full extent of the 1748 Map of Rome by Giambattista Nolli is shown on the Surface multi-touch table. Clearly visible are the main features of the city, including the dense historic center, the ancient wall circuit and the Tiber River winding its way through the the city. At the bottom of the screen a filmstrip reveals all 238 views of the city engraved by Giuseppe Vasi from 1747 to 1761. The video unfolds to show how each of these views will be referenced to the Nolli map through an interactive touch process that allows users to explore Rome street by street with an intuitive hands on approach.
The fade feature shows how these combined images can easily transform on Surface with a touch of the hand from historic views to contemporary views and back again. To facilitate comparisons, the satellite image has been carefully geo-rectified with the Nolli map allowing one to contrast the existing city to its 18th century origins. In a similar manner, contemporary photographs appear in the filmstrip that correspond directly to Vasis views from 250 years ago. These vivid juxtapositions make clear how Rome has evolved over the centuries.

Brian Sewell writes for the London Evening Standard and is noted for artistic conservatism and his acerbic view of the Turner Prize and conceptual art. Sewell has been described as "Britain's most famous and controversial art critic." Brian worked at Christie's auction house, specialising in Old Master paintings and drawings.

A wonderful description of Brian from The Guardian's post-filming interview: "An old primrose Mercedes stops on a snowy bend and from its leathery recesses emerges a man with white hair and small, beady eyes, a soft blanket pulled tight around his shoulders against the cold. The man begins to speak, his voice improbably delicate; he sounds like a dowager duchess carefully recalling a large turd she was once mistakenly served during tea at Claridge's."
From the same interview: "On the last day of filming, one of the crew looked him straight in the eye and said: 'We all think it's been absolute hell working with you', a compliment that Sewell simply batted back. He is, rather disingenuously, I would say, highly indignant at what he has learned of television. 'I was promised that it would be my programme. That it would be all my research. I set down my criteria. "Yes, yes, yes," they said. "You can have all that." But my researches were buggered up by some 22-year-old with a degree from Nottingham. The nitwit had no idea. He didn't know if we were in the 18th or the 19th century and had me, as it were, chasing after Browning and the phenomenon of Chiantishire. I think simply this: they [TV people] are fundamentally unserious. They know nothing. They see things only in their own petty, boxed-in terms, and they cannot understand it when they have a presenter who has no vanity.'
In particular, he hated the way he was expected to come up with pictures. If he mentioned a duel, swordsmen would be booked; if he mentioned dancing, music would be arranged. He found all this ridiculous, as you can see in one scene when a young 'nobleman' and his lady can be seen prancing around to, bizarrely, the sound of a hurdy-gurdy. For a while, Sewell watches, poker-faced. Then, unable to contain himself any longer, he explodes with laughter. It is to their credit that the people at Five have kept the laughter in.
'It's moronic,' he says. 'Moronic. The day-by-day tedium of it. Nine weeks. What hell. "
Despite Brian's suffering, I rather enjoyed the series. Which by the way, was filmed in reverse, starting in Venice. What a treasure he is.

Grand Tour
The Grand Tour was the traditional trip of Europe undertaken by mainly upper-class European young men of means, or those of more humble origin who could find a sponsor. The custom flourished from about 1660 until the advent of large-scale rail transport in the 1840s, and was associated with a standard itinerary. It served as an educational rite of passage. Though primarily associated with the British nobility and wealthy landed gentry, similar trips were made by wealthy young men of Protestant Northern European nations on Continental Europe, and from the second half of the 18th century, by some South and North Americans. The tradition declined with the lapse of neo-classical enthusiasm and after rail and steamship travel made the journeys much easier when Thomas Cook made the "Cook's Tour" of early mass tourism a byword.
The New York Times in 2008 described the Grand Tour in this way:
The primary value of the Grand Tour, it was believed, lay in the exposure both to the cultural legacy of classical antiquity and the Renaissance, and to the aristocratic and fashionably polite society of the European continent. In addition, it provided the only opportunity to view specific works of art, and possibly the only chance to hear certain music. A Grand Tour could last from several months to several years. It was commonly undertaken in the company of a Cicerone, a knowledgeable guide or tutor. The Grand Tour had more than superficial cultural importance; as E. P. Thompson stated, "ruling-class control in the 18th century was located primarily in a cultural hegemony, and only secondarily in an expression of economic or physical (military) power."

Rousham nestled deep in the Oxfordshire countryside is, to the eyes of many, the epitome of an English arcadia. But the gardens, designed by the eccentric architect, landscape and furniture designer William Kent in the early part of the 18th century, makes unquestionable references to the Grand Tour and Italy. The result is that Rousham achieves one of the most successful mixes of the benign English bucolic together with sophisticated Italian classicism.
This short excerpt shows the extent of this influence both within the gardens and landscape and also within the ravishing Rousham House itself.

The Microsoft Surface application presents Rome during the Age of the Grand Tour through the eyes of Giuseppe Vasi, an extraordinary18th century artist of urban landscapes. His 10 volumes of city views, the Magnificenze di Roma (the Splendors of Rome) are carefully located--geo-referenced--within the city aided by the 1748 Map of Rome by Giambattista Nolli, a contemporary architect and master cartographer. The Surface will promote in depth study of Rome by visually integrating the work of these artists and then comparing them with modern day photography and satellite imaging. This unique digital experience will reveal Rome over her long history providing a rich learning environment for diverse audiences. This video captures how visitors might use such a device.
The full extent of the 1748 Map of Rome by Giambattista Nolli is shown on the Surface multi-touch table. Clearly visible are the main features of the city, including the dense historic center, the ancient wall circuit and the Tiber River winding its way through the the city. At the bottom of the screen a filmstrip reveals all 238 views of the city engraved by Giuseppe Vasi from 1747 to 1761. The video unfolds to show how each of these views will be referenced to the Nolli map through an interactive touch process that allows users to explore Rome street by street with an intuitive hands on approach.
The fade feature shows how these combined images can easily transform on Surface with a touch of the hand from historic views to contemporary views and back again. To facilitate comparisons, the satellite image has been carefully geo-rectified with the Nolli map allowing one to contrast the existing city to its 18th century origins. In a similar manner, contemporary photographs appear in the filmstrip that correspond directly to Vasis views from 250 years ago. These vivid juxtapositions make clear how Rome has evolved over the centuries.

A wonderful description of Brian from The Guardian's post-filming interview: "An old primrose Mercedes stops on a snowy bend and from its leathery recesses emerges a man with white hair and small, beady eyes, a soft blanket pulled tight around his shoulders against the cold. The man begins to speak, his voice improbably delicate; he sounds like a dowager duchess carefully recalling a large turd she was once mistakenly served during tea at Claridge's."
From the same interview: "On the last day of filming, one of the crew looked him straight in the eye and said: 'We all think it's been absolute hell working with you', a compliment that Sewell simply batted back. He is, rather disingenuously, I would say, highly indignant at what he has learned of television. 'I was promised that it would be my programme. That it would be all my research. I set down my criteria. "Yes, yes, yes," they said. "You can have all that." But my researches were buggered up by some 22-year-old with a degree from Nottingham. The nitwit had no idea. He didn't know if we were in the 18th or the 19th century and had me, as it were, chasing after Browning and the phenomenon of Chiantishire. I think simply this: they [TV people] are fundamentally unserious. They know nothing. They see things only in their own petty, boxed-in terms, and they cannot understand it when they have a presenter who has no vanity.'
In particular, he hated the way he was expected to come up with pictures. If he mentioned a duel, swordsmen would be booked; if he mentioned dancing, music would be arranged. He found all this ridiculous, as you can see in one scene when a young 'nobleman' and his lady can be seen prancing around to, bizarrely, the sound of a hurdy-gurdy. For a while, Sewell watches, poker-faced. Then, unable to contain himself any longer, he explodes with laughter. It is to their credit that the people at Five have kept the laughter in.
'It's moronic,' he says. 'Moronic. The day-by-day tedium of it. Nine weeks. What hell. "
Despite Brian's suffering, I rather enjoyed the series. Which by the way, was filmed in reverse, starting in Venice. What a treasure he is.

So while Dragon Ball Super's "Future Trunks" arc is continuing to air in Japan, I thought it'd be fun to tie everyone over with another Dragon Ball topic. Jack Dreas asked for us to talk about the much-disputed Dragon Ball GT series, often ripped on by fans of the franchise for years. I'm joined yet again by Mike "VegettoEX" LaBrie to talk about, not merely why GT is so commonly ragged on, but the things about it that we actually enjoyed! Mike and I go into the history of why GT exists, how we first got introduced to it in the 90's and early 2000's before its official presence in the US, dissect through all of the major story arcs of its 64 episodes and look back on all the good and bad that came with Toei's attempt at continuing the story of Goku and his friends beyond the end of Toriyama's original manga. Nuka World is the last Fallout 4 DLC. It's a vast amusement park now a lawless city of Raider gangs. All new region includes a new open wasteland and park zones. There are four large park zones: Galactic zone (Starlight Interstellar Theater, Vault Tec Among The Stars, Starport Nuka, Robco Battlezone and Nuka Galaxy), Kiddie Kingdom (Ferris Wheel, King Cola's Castle, Nuka Racers and Fun House), Dry Rock Gulch (Doc Phosphate's Saloon, Dry Rock Gulch Theater, Mad Mulligan's Mine and Coaster) Safari Adventure (Cappy's Treehouse, Primate House, Reptile House and Angry Anaconda).
Nuka World features new unique and legendary weapons which can be given to sole survivor as a quest rewards: handmade rifle, automatic rifle, paddle ball, acid soaker, thirst zapper and more...
There are three Raider gangs with their leaders in the Nuka Town USA: Operators (Mags and William), Disciples (Nisha, Dixie and Savoy) and Packs (Mason).
You can explore the World of Refreshment and Nuka Cola Bottling Plant to learn about the secret Project Cobalt and the way to modify thirst zapper and make the nuka cola, nuka cherry and nuka quantum gun. Also it's possible to find Siera Petrovita in the Nuka Town USA and go further to find all hidden cappys and unlock the secret and meet the inventor of the Nuka Cola formula itself - Jonh Caleb Bradberton, then take the nuka nuke schematics and Nuka Nuke launcher from the secret safe to complete Cappy in the Haystack quest.
There is a new group in the wasteland called the Hubologists and they are located at the Hubologist's Camp. You can meet Cleansed and he will take you to their leader Dara and then the new unique side quest is started - Trip to the Stars.
Clear the Nuka World Junkyard and power up the UFO to help the Hubologists to start their trip to the stars to meet their leader - Start Father. You can join the hubologists and increase your rank to AHS 8 by taking the zeta rays treatments.
Travel south to find the Grandchester Mystery Mansion and hear the horror stoty about little girl Lucy and her parents. The rest of the new locations are Evan's home, Dunmore homestead, Wixon's Shovel Museum, Bradberton Overpass,
Northpoint Reservoir, Morton Residence and Red Rocket.
There are new items called Star Cores. Find and collect all star cores in the Galactic zone to repair the mainframe in the Starport Nuka and complete the Star Control quest.
There are new interesting characters which can be found in the parks and the Nuka Town Usa: Oswald the Outrageous ghoul magician, Cito, NIRA, Sierra Petrovita, Evan, Jonh Caleb Bradberton, new companion Gage Porter who can be romanced, Shank, Harvey.
Speak to NIRA in the Nuka Town USA and collect all park medallions for the special reward. To become a new overboss you must kill Overboss Colter in the arena and you can find a new overboss power armor.
New armors and outfits can be found: operators, disciples and packs armors, nuka cola and cappy's outfits, western outfits and space astronaut costumes. Have fun in Nuka Cage and Cola Cars Arena.
Fight the new creatures like gatorclaws, blood worm larvaes, giant ants, nukalurks, nukatrones and more. Speak to Shank and wipe out settlements in the Commonwealth and claim a new outposts for the raider gangs.
There is a new main story line and few different endings of the story. Main story line includes a few new missions: All Aboard, Taken for a Ride, An Ambitious Plan, The Grand Tour, Star Control, A Magical Kingdom, Safari Adventure, A World of Refreshment, High Noon at the Gulch, Home Sweet Home, Power Play and Open Season.
This dlc include a new workshop items for the settlements.
