Perth freezes through coldest September nights ever

Perth has shivered through its coldest September in more than 20 years while overnight temperatures dropped to a 72-year record-breaking low.

And it looks like spring will continue to stay in hiding with the forecast for October expected to also be below average.

Bureau of Meteorologist spokesman Neil Bennett said only four days in September reached above 20 degrees – equalling an unenviable record set in 2009.

"We've had the coldest September since records started at the Mt Lawley (Perth metropolitan) station in 1994," he said.

"Perth's maximum average for the month was 18.5 degrees which is 1.9 degrees below the average of 20.4 degrees."

The cold was felt most during the nights and early mornings with the average minimum temperature for the month dipping to 7.6 degrees - two degrees below average.

The minimum is the coldest recorded at Perth Airport station since records began in 1944.

"It has been very chilly," Mr Bennett said.

"The number of days above 20 degrees since the start of June has only been 17, the average is 45 days.

"For October, we're looking more likely to be below average (23.4 degrees)."

The Stirling Ranges looks set to feel the chill the most, with snow forecast for the first day of October on Saturday.

Farmers in WA's Wheatbelt on Thursday made a snowman out of frost that had gathered on their tractor as temperatures at Southern Cross dipped to a state-wide minimum of -2.4 degrees.

Meanwhile, rain is forecast for Perth this weekend, with showers not expected to clear until Tuesday.
