Firefighters have freed a four-year-old boy after his hand got trapped in a vending machine in Melbourne's outer east.

Specialist Metropolitan Fire Brigade rescue crews were called to the scene at Eastland Shopping Centre in Ringwood at 4.25pm on Friday.

Crews had to cut open to the machine to free the boy's hand after it became stuck when he tried to retrieve some lollies, an MFB spokesman said.

"The young lad is distressed," he said.

The boy was taken to hospital with minor injuries to his fingers.

The rescue took seven firefighters more than 45 minutes.
