Penobscot Bay originates from the mouth of Maine's Penobscot River. 11,000 years ago, at the beginning of the Holocene era, the Gulf of Maine's sea level fell as low as 180 feet (55 m) below its present height. Penobscot Bay was then a continuation of Penobscot River that meandered through a broad lowland extending past present day Matinicus Island. Penobscot Bay is between Muscongus Bay and Blue Hill Bay.
Penobscot Bay and its chief tributary, Penobscot River are named for the Penobscot Indian Nation, which has continuously inhabited the area for more than ten thousand years, fishing, hunting and shellfish gathering in and around the bay and river. A part of the Wabanaki Confederacy, the Penobscot Indian Nation's present reservation includes Indian Island, north of Orono, Maine, and all the islands of Penobscot River above it. Ancient remains of their campsites dating back millennia have been found on the bay's shores and islands. For more on Wabanaki culture and history on the Maine coast, see "Asticou's Island Domain: Wabanaki Peoples at Mount Desert Island 1500-2000,"(National Park Service, 2007)
Finally made it onto Captain Dave's crew for Summer 2014. We spent a few days gunkholing through the Penobscot Bay. For me, there's nothing better than life on the water. This video does not do the trip justice. Thanks to Dave, Marilyn, Renne, Julia and Matt for being the best crew a guy could ask for. The music track is Les Voiles by Poom.
This was a one week sailboat charter on a 32ft sloop, during September, around Penobscot bay. It was myself and my girlfriend. The weather was generally great, except the near freezing nights. We only had one day of strong winds (25 knots). Only took footage when the sailing was easy, so it looks perfect, but that's how I remember it anyway. Our route was from Bucks Harbor, down to South West Harbour, Castine and then return. I have never had to dodge so many lobster pots in my life and the trip was absolutely fantastic. Please hit like if you enjoy watching this, feel free to add a comment if you have any questions.

This is a collection of a few video clips from tacking back and forth between Islesboro Island and North Haven Island in Penobscot Bay in Maine. Our trip went from Isleboro, to Vynalhaven, to Merchants Row, to Mount Desert and back again. There was some very strong wind and we managed to get the rail under a few times. The sailboat is named Highlight. She is a 1965 Alden Caravelle and is a 41 ft over all and 28 ft on the water line.
