Slipknot fans were thrilled to experience their favorite band in Tucson on Sept. 27, 2016. It was a full blast, metal music phantasm designed to churn stomachs and scare the bejesus out of all who attended. The extravaganza touted using some 100 or more strobe lights and videos in the background showing maggots feasting and either an endoscopy or colonoscopy showing human innards.

The band’s biggest gimmick is playing and vocalizing behind masks and costumes while displaying their meaty metal chops. The stage is set with runways and multiple levels of band platforms that allowed frontman, Corey Taylor, to explore the set while giving fans his guttural growls. There are three drummer/percussionists elevated on moving platforms that adds to the visual effects presented.

Corey Taylor took a hard fall during a show in Atlanta at the beginning of their summer tour. He reportedly didn’t know how injured he was even though he could not walk after the fall. He ended up having to have surgery and wearing a brace for part of the tour. There was no brace during this show. However, the physical antics seemed to be guarded. Regardless, there was no problem with Corey screaming his head off.

There were lots of fans present even though the Tucson Arena was only half filled. That was still approximately 5,000 "maggot" headbangers! (Maggots is how Slipknot’s fanbase identifies themselves.)

The set contained many of the hits that Slipknot is well known such as “Surfacing,’ “Duality,” “(sic),” and “The Heretic Anthem.” Corey gave his most feral and uncontainable performance. The masked marauders gave their best maelstrom showmanship to the Tucson crowd. It is little wonder that this metal band is second only to Metallica in popularity and that difference may be narrowing. The show was a testament of pure theatrical excess designed to freak people out. For a complete set list, please click here.
