The American League soared to a 4-2 victory over the National League to win the 2016 Major League Baseball All-Star game. With this victory the American League earned World Series home field advantage, reports CBS Sports News on July 11.

On Tuesday evening at Petco Park in San Diego initially it seemed the National League was going to sail to victory. In the first inning Kris Bryant hit a homerun off of Chris Sale. According to the broadcast Bryant was the youngest player on the Chicago Cubs to hit a home run in a Major League Baseball All-Star game since 1936.

But the National League couldn't seem to keep up with the moves of their American League counterparts. The Kansas City Royals shined to bring the American League to victory. To start things off Eric Hosmer hit a solo home run off of his former teammate Johnny Cueto and the score was even.

Mookie Belts then hit a single and Salvador Perez came on strong with a home run and now the score was 3-1 in favor of the American League. The Kansas City Royals were just beginning. On his next time at bat Hosmer singled in another run and the American League now had a 4-1 lead. All four runs for the American League were driven in by the Kansas City Royals. The National League scored just once more.

The American League did a spectacular job holding off the National League to win the Major League Baseball All-Star game reports USA Today. The American League bullpen was incredible in this game. For the last five innings the National League was kept scoreless.

The All-Star teams stopped playing ball to take a moment to give David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox a standing ovation. This was the 10th and final All-Star game for Ortiz. The players on his team shared their emotions about this by hugging Ortiz. Ortiz drew a walk in the bottom of the third inning. Earlier in the game Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez said if he faced Ortiz he would consider throwing the ball right down the middle to give Ortiz a chance to hit a homerun. This is the kind of professional spirit in baseball that can bring out the best in all of us.
