Genevieve is a 1953 British comedy film produced and directed by Henry Cornelius and written by William Rose. It stars John Gregson, Dinah Sheridan, Kenneth More and Kay Kendall as two couples comedically involved in a veteran automobile rally. The main theme of the musical score was composed and performed by Larry Adler. Composer Graham Whettam was commissioned to write the orchestral score incorporating Larry Adler's tune. Dance numbers were added by Eric Rogers.
The comedic tone of Genevieve was established by the following disclaimer at the end of the opening credits:
This was meant to underscore the fact that the actual event portrayed in the film was, as stated in its Official Entry Regulations, "NOT A RACE."
Two veteran cars and their crews participating in the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. Alan McKim (John Gregson), a young barrister, and his wife, Wendy (Dinah Sheridan), drive Genevieve, a 1904 Darracq. Their friend Ambrose Claverhouse (Kenneth More), a brash advertising salesman, his latest girlfriend, fashion model Rosalind Peters (Kay Kendall) and her pet St. Bernard ride in a 1905 Spyker.

Max's liberal approach to love becomes a welcome and powerful new force in their separate lives. When Genevieve and Adrian discover they have been seduced by the same man, their friendship with one another as well as their relationships with Max come under question. As Max continues to promise them his affections, the three attempt to let go of their ideals and form a triangle. But as Genevieve and Adrian attempt to share their prize in a 'ménage à trois,' the foundation of their friendship begins to crumble all together.

Along the way, Carl carves a bloody trail through sadistic prison camp guards, small-town business entrepreneurs, and international assassins-for-hire, while matching wits with black marketeers, resurrected advertising middle managers, and the devout worshipers of a marine biologist-turned-priest. But as his surreal travels begin to take a toll on him, Carl finds himself increasingly unable to conduct business as usual.

Classic British comedy from 1953. After an argument, Ambrose and Alan decide to race back to London in their vintage cars, initially agreeing to exchange money Alan decides to bet upon his beloved car Genevieve. This is from the final few minutes of the movie and I've included the "The End" credit because I adore Larry Adler's Oscar nominated score :)
Joyce Grenfell's cameo in this 1953 British comedy classic was described by her as the "wooly-brained but amicable receptionist". The piece was played out at an old-fashioned Brighton hotel inappropriately named 'Grand Palace Marine Hotel' where John Gregson and Dinah Sherdian had no option but to stay.
Mark Kermode reminisces about his experiences of watching a great British institution, Henry Cornelius' delightful vintage car caper, while also revealing some interesting facts about this beloved British classic. Classic British comedy from 1953 about two couples adventures at the London to Brighton Commemorative Run. Ambrose finally arrives at the finish line with his latest girlfriend Rosalind and her St Bernard's Suzy, while his married friends Alan and Wendy are still broken down on a country rode. In a desperate bid to finish the run, Alan mends his beloved 1905 motor car, Genevieve.
Kenneth Gilbert More CBE (20th September 1914 - 12th July 1982) was an English film and stage actor. Raised to stardom by the vintage car based film-comedy Genevieve (1953), he appeared in many roles as a carefree, happy-go-lucky gent. His biggest hits from this period include Raising a Riot (1955), Reach for the Sky (1956) and The Admirable Crichton (1958). He starred in Doctor in the House (1954), the first of the popular Doctor film series. Although his career declined in the early 1960s, two of his own favourite films date from this time - The Comedy Man (1964) and The Greengage Summer (1961) with Susannah York, "one of the happiest films on which I have ever worked." He also enjoyed a revival in the much-acclaimed TV adaptation of The Forsyte Saga (1967) and the Father Brown series.
While technically not a film produced in Hollywood, "Genevieve" is a 1953 British comedy that starred Kenneth More, Kay Kendall and John Gregson and the film had wide appeal and distribution to American audiences. Percy Faith included the lovely theme to the film (with his soaring arrangement) in his "Music From Hollywood" LP, which was written by Larry Adler with lyrics by William Engvick. Burt Taylor does a beautiful job on the vocal. Recorded in New York 1953. Orchestra under the direction of Percy Faith.
Genevieve, genevieve.....
I went down to some backroom joint
Where I spent the night before,
Looking for the girl I love -
She left and wrote her name on my door.
She's got a guilty conscience of her own -
I've got to find out why she keeps running on,
Why she keeps running on.
Nobody gonna steal that woman, nobody for sure.
Genevieve, I got to find you, woman, tonight.
Deep in shadows of a neon-lit street
You know she gave me the slip.
I would love her every day,
But she's quicksilver in my grip.
Little darlin', you move too fast -
You're here one minute, and you're gone in a flash,
Gone in a flash.
Nobody gonna steal that woman, nobody for sure.
I got to find you,
Genevieve, I'm gonna find you tonight.
Genevieve, why did you leave?
Genevieve, why did you leave?
Don't you feel guilty, loving two men?
Well, I'm the one to stand by your side.
Oh, baby, yes I love you so,
But do you listen to his lies?
Make up your mind, who's your loving for?
You're in the middle of a battle with the man at war,
Man at war.
Nobody gonna steal that woman, nobody for sure.
Genevieve, I got to find you, woman, tonight.
Genevieve, I'm gonna find you tonight. (repeat)
Genevieve.
