A sex offender is on the run after fleeing a Queensland courthouse under lockdown late Thursday afternoon.

The 33-year-old pushed a legal representative aside before fleeing his hearing in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court about 4.50pm, a police spokesman said.

He had just been convicted of sex offences.

"He was to be remanded in custody," he said.

"At that point he's fled on foot from the courthouse.

"Even though the court went into lockdown he managed to pull the doors apart as they were shutting."

Rockhampton police saw the Gladstone man driving through the Allenstown area of Rockhampton on Friday morning, but abandoned their pursuit after he increased speed and crossed onto the wrong side of the road.

He wasn't considered to be dangerous, police said.

He was last seen wearing a dark blue T-shirt and jeans and was described as Aboriginal in appearance, about 188 centimetres tall, with a heavy build, short dark hair and facial stubble.

The spokesman said he couldn't reveal details of the man's charges for legal reasons.
