Rain and chills still hanging around as September fails to spring

It seems spring is still refusing to show itself in Western Australia, with parts of the South West and central Wheatbelt shivering through sub-zero temperatures on Thursday morning.

The lowest temperature was recorded at Southern Cross Airport at 5.49am, when the mercury dipped to -2.4 degrees.

Other areas to fall below freezing this morning included Bridgetown (-1.3), Katanning (-0.1), Wandering (-1.9) and Cunderdin (-1.4).

Wheatbelt farmer Mark Fowler was even able to build a snowman this morning from the frost gathered on his crops.

If you have found this September to feel cooler than usual you would be right, with figures of the mean maximum temperature on track to be at their lowest since 2009.

The mean maximum temperature for September has been over 20 degrees between 2010 - 2015, but we're now on track to equal the 2009 average of 18.6.

The Perth metropolitan area dipped to 4.4 degrees at 5.14am this morning.

The Bureau of Meteorology's spokesman Neil Bennett said Perth is in a prolonged period of cold weather, but it's difficult to find a reason behind it.

He said there is some encouraging signs that the chills would shake off soon, with Wednesday's forecast set for 23 degrees.
