His name? Bernie Sanders. Here's why it matters: Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) chairs Rep. Keith Ellison and Rep. Raul Grijalva are one of a few key Democratic National Convention Superdelegates, which means they cast special Superdelegate votes outside of the primary - and most of their fellow Superdelegates are endorsing Hillary early, giving her a huge headstart before a single primarygoer gets to cast a ballot. Hillary and the other Democratic candidates are already banking as many Superdelegate votes as they can, ensuring they're unaccountable to real Democratic primary voters. Tonight, Rep. Grijalva formally endorse Bernie at a rally in Tucson. If more progressive Superdelegates follow his lead, it makes the Democratic primary about what it should be: getting votes from actual primary voters, not powerful party insiders. Superdelegate endorsements are ultimately about sending a message to elected Democrats around the country: it's okay to admit you support Bernie. Right now, it can feel risky for a national political figure to publicly endorse Bernie Sanders, knowing that corporate donors and party insiders don't like it. By signaling to the 75 CPC members that they should feel safe to support their longtime ally Bernie Sanders, Grijalva can kick off a wave of crucial Bernie endorsements in these clutch last few months before the primaries begin. I've been lucky enough to meet in the past with a number of them, including Raul Grijalva. I know many of them have a proven track record of joining Bernie on the really important fights. And I also know that, while they appreciate Bernie Sanders' CPC membership, their endorsement is most certainly not guaranteed. It'd be big news for them to endorse Bernie as Superdelegates. They need us to give them cover.
