Mission San Xavier del Bac, sometimes called The White Dove of the Desert, sits ten miles south of downtown Tucson on the Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation. Patronato San Xavier, a nonsectarian nonprofit organization, has launched the ‘White Dove Campaign’ to restore the East Tower of San Xavier del Bac. A historic Spanish Catholic mission located about 10 miles (16 km) south of downtown Tucson, Arizona, on the Tohono O'odham San Xavier Indian Reservation. It was founded in 1692 by Padre Eusebio Kino and named for a pioneering Christian missionary and co-founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuit Order), Francis Xavier. In 1700 construction began on a church at a site nearby the current Mission. It served the community until razed by Apaches in 1770. Today's Mission was built between 1783-1797 and is the oldest European structure in Arizona. Widely considered to be the finest example of Spanish Colonial architecture in the United States, it hosts some 200,000 visitors each year. The site is also known as the “place where the water appears”, as there were once natural springs in the area. The...

Located just south of Tucson the San Xavier del Bac mission was established in 1692. Construction of the church was completed in 1797 and is now a National Historic Landmark. I highly recommend the Indian Flat Bread and chili sold at the square in front of the church.

Spring break took us to Arizona to visit family and while there we connected with my brother and his family since they were visiting too. The day was spent all over Tucson and we stopped to see the San Xavier Mission del Bac and take for a tour. Bryan took pictures of the interior and exterior (with his fancy camera) while I used a GoPro for a few interiors pictures and flew the drone over the Mission. Again, we lucked out with having nobody around with good lighting. I was really happy to have flow San Xavier and even happier it was put into a video as the even this video was filmed, vandals came in a spray painted the Mission - jerk faces. Saturday, November 9, 2013, at 2 p.m. architect Robert Vint gave a fascinating illustrated talk on At the Rim of Christendom: San Xavier del Bac and the Spanish Mission System. This program was free and open to all. The colonization of the New World by the Spanish included the development of a Mission system where the education of the Native population entailed more than just conversion to a "new" religion. With the cooperation of the Spanish Crown, the friars' job was to train the Natives in different trades so they could pay the royal taxes. The El Paso Museum of History at 510 North Santa Fe Street presents The Missions of Spain in the Borderlands Lecture Series which complements the Fourth Wall of Giants.

"One of [Diaz's] earliest memories as a child was the way death and religion played an important role in [his] family's life." The churches in Southern Arizona were dark and creepy, with blood-soaked idols that mirrored those to whom Diaz's Grandmother built shrines in her home. The Native Americans who constructed Father Kino's Spanish Mission San Xavier del Bac in Tucson left their own mark on the church's interior, frightening youth with a spirituality akin to black magi...
