The London Underground (or simply the Underground or the Tube) is a public rapid transit system serving a large part of Greater London and parts of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex. The network is considered the oldest rapid transit system, incorporating the world's first underground railway, the Metropolitan Railway, which opened in 1863 and is now part of the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines; and the first line to operate underground electric traction trains, the City & South London Railway in 1890, now part of the Northern line. The network has expanded to 11 lines, and in 2014/15 carried 1.305 billion passengers, making the Underground the world's 11th busiest metro system.
London i/ˈlʌndən/ is the capital and most populous city of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. It was founded by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km2) medieval boundaries and in 2011 had a resident population of 7,375, making it the smallest city in England. Since at least the 19th century, the term London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms Greater London, a region of England governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. The conurbation also covers two English counties: the small district of the City of London and the county of Greater London. The latter constitutes the vast majority of London, though historically it was split between Middlesex (a now abolished county), Essex, Surrey, Kent and Hertfordshire.

The New Tube will be introduced first on the Piccadilly line, followed by the Bakerloo, Central and Waterloo & City lines. Its innovative design will also allow for air-cooling for the first time on deep-level sections of the Tube. The train - designs for which are part of a new public exhibition at King's Cross St Pancras Underground station - also features improved accessibility, with step free access from the platform as well as walk-through carriages and wider doors. An animated timeline showing how the Underground started in 1863, and then grew over the years. Note that the exact tube map lines colours that you know (eg. Yellow for the Circle Line, Pink for H&C;) aren't shown, as it was originally part of the Metropolitan Line which is what this animation shows .. how the system came together and gradually evolved. Also note that: The stations in the Hounslow area are really tricky to show (Hounslow Town opened in 1883, closed in 1886, then had a period when it was open again between 1903 and 1909) which is why we have a separate animated timeline of railways in the Hounslow area: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yseD1E3Z0hE The Northern City Line was not originally part of the Northern Line but is shown here in black, as it did later become part of ...

This Documentary has been uploaded for educational purposes. No copyright infringement is intended. Original programme description: On the surface, London is a buzzing metropolis. But underneath lies secret, hidden worlds, all but forgotten by the millions of people above. These places make up the countless layers of London, and each tells a unique story of the city’s past - successes and failures; victories and tragedies. When the Romans founded settlements along the River Thames during the 1st century AD, they laid down the very first layer of one of the world’s greatest cities. Long buried pieces of the original Roman town still survive to this day – statues, walls, even an entire amphitheatre, where fierce gladiators once fought…and died for glory. London has seen more than its fa...

Rocco Ritchie nay need to reconsider who he befriends as onlookers were left shocked by his group's bad behaviourRocco Ritchie was desperate to live with his dad, Guy, but it turns out he's having the time of his life in London with his mum at the moment. Madonna's son Rocco raised eyebrows as he and a gang of friends left some passengers on the London Underground feeling intimidated by them and their aggressive behaviour. The 16-year-old was spotted hanging out with a group of mates on the public carriage causing a scene and raising eyebrows by being loud, using foul language and jumping on a skateboard while the train was moving. An eyewitness exclusively told Mirror Online: "Rocco has just been on the the tube from Westbourne Park to Great Portland Street. "His friends were a bit rowd...

After this comes Mile End, which sees District and Hammersmith & City Line trains alongside Central line trains. Finally we see Piccadilly and Victoria line services at Finsbury Park.
The London Underground History - Geographic History. The idea of an underground railway linking the City of London with some of the railway termini in its urban centre was proposed in the 1830s, and the Metropolitan Railway was granted permission to build such a line in 1854. The world's first underground railway, it opened in January 1863 between Paddington and Farringdon using gas-lit wooden carriages hauled by steam locomotives. It was hailed as a success, carrying 38,000 passengers on the opening day, and borrowing trains from other railways to supplement the service. The Metropolitan District Railway (commonly known as the District Railway) opened in December 1868 from South Kensington to Westminster as part of a plan for an underground 'inner circle' connecting London's main-line t...

Some people might like to get a train to work
Or drive in in a Beamer or a merc,
Some guys like to travel in by bus,
But I can't be bothered with the fuss today
I'm going to take my bike,
Coz once again the Tube's on strike.
The greedy bastards want extra pay
for sitting on their arse all day
even though they earn 30K .
So I'm standing here in the pouring rain,
Where the fuck's my fucking train?
London Underground
London Underground
They're all lazy fucking useless cunts
London Underground
London Underground
They're all greedy cunts I want to shoot them all with a rifle.
All they say is "Please mind the doors",
and they learned that on the two day course,
This job could be done by a four year old.
They just leave us freezing in the cold.
What you smell is what you get
Burger King and piss and sweat
You roast to death in the boiling heat,
With tourists treading on your feet
and chewing gum on every seat,
so don't tell me to "Mind the gap"
I want my fucking money back.
London Underground
London Underground
They're all lazy fucking useless cunts
London Underground
London Underground
They're all greedy cunts I want to shoot them all with a rifle
LaLaLaLa
LaLaLaLa
The floors are sticky and the seats are damp,
Every platform has a fucking tramp,
But the drivers get the day off when we're all late for work again,
