Gas leak shuts down Arthurs Seat chairlift building site

A GAS leak has shut down the Arthurs Seat chairlift construction site near Dromana.

The leak is believed to be coming from the main gas line for the southern peninsula, and police have evacuated up to 40 people from a carpark and the building site.

Police and CFA workers are doorknocking nearby houses to alert residents. Residents on the Peninsula are advised to use as little gas as possible until the incident is finalised.

Parks Victoria spokesman Lachlan Quick said it seemed a contractor had pierced the gas line.

He said repairs would be made as soon as possible, hopefully before wild weather sets in later today.

It is not known if gas supply to the peninsula has been affected.

Arthurs Seat Rd is closed at Purves Rd at the top and at Towerhill Rd at the bottom.

The CFA said there was no threat to the community, but people should avoid the area.

The gas company is on scene investigating the best way to address the issue, the CFA said.

Nine CFA trucks from Dromana, Hallam, Peninsula, Red Hill, Rosebud and an operations wagon are at the scene.
