One of Brisbane’s most historic homes is going to auction next month.

Kangaroo Point’s heritage-listed Silverwells North was built more than 150 years ago and is considered one of Brisbane’s oldest standing homes.

The 261 Main Street Georgian manor was built by Sydney merchant Joseph Thompson in the 1860s, but had major restoration in 2010 that modernised parts of the property.

State Library of Queensland historian Dianne Byrne said it was one of Brisbane’s most important homes to survive mass development.

“While we can’t determine the exact date when Silverwells North was built, we can draw from photographic evidence that this home goes back as far as the mid 1860s,” Ms Byrne said.

The four-bedroom residence has rooftop views of Brisbane CBD and the Story Bridge and has a riverside pool terrace.

Ms Byrne said you had to see it to believe it.

“You really get a sense of the scale of this property when you see it first-hand. You can appreciate just how impressive and expansive this home, the gardens and grounds are,” she said.

The sellers, who wished to remain private, have decided to downsize from the large manor.

Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty agent Tyson Clarke said the home was “likely the last one in Brisbane”.

“These just do not come up often at all,” Mr Clarke said. “It’s been incredibly exciting uncovering the history of this important residence.”

“It’s immaculate, it looks like it was built yesterday.”

He said interest had been “substantial”.

“My phone has been ringing hot because the style of the house really appeals to all demographics,” he said.

“I’m expecting a lot of people and a big crowd on auction day, from serious buyers, but also people turning out just to see the home, too.”

The on-site auction is on October 20 at 6.30pm.
