STORYLINE:
North Koreans living in the Chinese border city of Dandong gathered to celebrate their Korean identity on Thursday.
About 100 people gathered to watch performances of traditional Korean song and dance at a "North Korea Culture and Art Exhibition".
The event came as North Korea was poised to send a rocket into space and the nation's young leader ascended to new top political posts strengthening his hold on power.
There was no word on Thursday morning on the timing of the controversial rocket launch, which the North has said will take place sometime between Thursday and Monday.
In 2009, a similar launch from an east coast site took place on the second day of a five-day window.
The launch, which the North says is for peaceful purposes, has raised international concern - and raised tensions in the region.
The North's new Tongchang-ri rocket launch site is about 35 miles (55 kilometres) from Dandong.
One resident said the cultural gatherings for North Koreans are common in the city, which is one of the main centres for China-Korean relations and trade.
Another resident said the intended rocket launch was symbolic for North Korea's new leader, and intended to show the world that he was trying to improve people's lives.
"This thing symbolises the economic and scientific improvement in North Korea," he said.
"Since Kim Jong Un became the secretary of the Korean Workers Party, he is determined to create development and to improve the North Korean people's lives," he added.

Dandong, previously known as Andong, is a city in the Liaoning province, China. It is on the border between China and North Korea, marked by the Yalu River. Also at this point, the river flows into Korea Bay. The size of the administrative city is 14,910 square kilometers; the urban city is 563 square kilometers in size and has 780,414 inhabitants. The administrative city covers around 2.4 million inhabitants as of 2000.
The city is across the river from Sinŭiju, North Korea. The two cities are connected by the Sino-Korea Friendship Bridge, also called the China-Korea Friendship Bridge. Another major landmark is Hushan Great Wall which marks the eastern end of the start of the Ming Dynasty's extension to the Great Wall. Other interesting tourist spots include: a museum dedicated to the "War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea" (also known as the Korean War) and Jinjiang mountain that is now the city's biggest park, but used to be a Chinese army lookout.

Dandong
Dandong (simplified Chinese: 丹东; traditional Chinese: 丹東; pinyin: Dāndōng), previously known as Andong, is a prefecture-level city in southeastern Liaoning province, People's Republic of China.
It is the largest Chinese border city, facing Sinuiju, North Korea across the Yalu River, which demarcates the Sino-North Korean border. To the southwest of the city, the river flows into Korea Bay. Dandong has therefore had a dynamic history because of its strategic location for the northeast's rich natural resources and because of its convenient access to the ocean. It is designated as a major export production centre for the province, and is a port city connected by rail with Shenyang and Sinuiju. A significant amount of trade with North Korea flows through the city.
The size of the administrative city (prefecture) is 14,981.4 square kilometres (5,784.4 sq mi). As of 2010, the built-up area made of 3 urban districts is 830 square kilometres (320 sq mi) in size and had 865,576 inhabitants. The administrative city contained approximately 2.45 million inhabitants as of the 2010 census. The Hushan Great Wall, the far eastern end of the Great Wall of China, is located here.

North Koreans living in the Chinese border city of Dandong gathered to celebrate their Korean identity on Thursday.
About 100 people gathered to watch performances of traditional Korean song and dance at a "North Korea Culture and Art Exhibition".
The event came as North Korea was poised to send a rocket into space and the nation's young leader ascended to new top political posts strengthening his hold on power.
There was no word on Thursday morning on the timing of the controversial rocket launch, which the North has said will take place sometime between Thursday and Monday.
In 2009, a similar launch from an east coast site took place on the second day of a five-day window.
The launch, which the North says is for peaceful purposes, has raised international concern - and raised tensions in the region.
The North's new Tongchang-ri rocket launch site is about 35 miles (55 kilometres) from Dandong.
One resident said the cultural gatherings for North Koreans are common in the city, which is one of the main centres for China-Korean relations and trade.
Another resident said the intended rocket launch was symbolic for North Korea's new leader, and intended to show the world that he was trying to improve people's lives.
"This thing symbolises the economic and scientific improvement in North Korea," he said.
"Since Kim Jong Un became the secretary of the Korean Workers Party, he is determined to create development and to improve the North Korean people's lives," he added.

Ko Hyon Chol, defector to south Korea who was arrested for committing an anti-DPRK hostile act on the instruction of the south Korean puppet Intelligence Service (IS), was interviewed at the People's Palace of Culture here on July 15.
Present there were domestic and foreign journalists, members of foreign embassies and international bodies here and overseas compatriots staying in the DPRK.
Ko spoke at the interview:
I betrayed my homeland and such betrayal can never be forgiven. But I asked for this press conference to reveal the vicious anti-DPRK moves of the U.S. and the south Korean puppet group.
I am 53 years old. I was born in Jongju City, North Phyongan Province and had lived in Namha-dong, Sinuiju City before defecting to the south.
When the country had a hard time, I worked at the Evodia Daniellii Forest Station in Sinuiju City. At that time, I was investigated by a judicial organ for my engagement in smuggling.
Instead of repenting of my wrongdoings, I fled to Dandong of China on January 26, 2013, across the River Amnok on board a fishing boat in a bid to evade the legal sanctions.
On around February 20, 2014 when I was living a retired life I came to know a south Korean, Ri Song Su, thought to be around 65.
He was residing in Dandong as a stooge of the IS. At the first meeting, he made detailed inquiries about me, asking when and why I fled the north. And he persuaded me that I could live in comfort in south Korea, saying that he helped defectors from the north to go to south Korea not long ago and all of them were living well there.
When I asked him if he was from the IS, he replied Yes. He said, "Wait for me until I get in touch with you. And you must never go outside."
I knew it was a traitorous act to go to south Korea, but I promised him to do so, allured by money.
At around 8 a.m. on February 28, 2014, I left Dandong together with strangers and arrived in Laos via Shenyang, Qingdao and Kunming of China, along the route planned by Ri Song Su. Then I was detained by the police in a northern border town of Thailand for illegal entry.
After a trial, I was moved to what is called "International Immigration Camp" in Bangkok. The camp was teemed with agents of the IS.
One day, two men and one woman, who were allegedly staff members of the south Korean embassy in Thailand, called on me to ask in detail about my identity, schooling and career.
After a month-long investigation, I was forced to go to Inchon of south Korea by plane in the night of April 25. When I got on the plane, hooligans of the IS warned me neither to speak with others nor change the seat. They seemed to be very afraid of the disclosure of their allurement operation.
In south Korea, I had to undergo an investigation of IS agents and a brain-washing course at "Hana Complex" before settling in Sihung, Kyonggi Province at the end of September 2014.
Then, I went to Sugu Islet in the Amnok River near Taehwa-ri, Uiju County, North Phyongan Province. The islet belongs to the DPRK's territory. There I called Hong and gave him a box containing a rubber boat.
Back in Dandong, I phoned Kwon that I offered the boat and would go to bring children on the early morning of May 27.
On May 27, I came to Sugu Islet again only to be arrested by a competent organ of the DPRK on the spot at around 06:15.
My crime ended in the attempt, but I frankly admit that I integrated myself into gangsters of the south Korean puppet Intelligence Service and conducted an anti-DPRK smear campaign and was directly involved in the abduction of children, a hideous crime.
And I make my heartfelt apology to the country and all its people and my home folks.
At the interview, such evidence pieces were displayed as a mobile phone, rubber boat and children clothes, which were confiscated from Ko Hyon Chol when he was arrested, and photos of Kwon Na Hyon, Ri Song Su and Choe Song Uk and others.
Ko Hyon Chol gave answers to questions put by reporters.

Just steps away from the border with North Korea, both Chinese and American ceremonies, along with the reception, were held in a North Korean hotel/restaurant.
The first part of the video shows the Chinese tradition of the groom picking up the bride at her Family's home. The groom and bride are then carried around and announced to the city.
The Chinese ceremony consists of the Groom shooting an arrow towards the sky, ground, and at his bride. He then escorts his vieled bride over fire and the great wall. They both greet their parents and bow to them, their guests, and then to each other.
Immediately after the Chinese wedding, is a western/ Jewish ceremony, including the grand reveal of the bride. The song chosen is Apocalyptica's instrumental cover of Metallica's "Nothing else Matters".The bride and groom share their vows, exchange rings, and the groom shows his last act of anger and violence by breaking the glass.
This video was made by a professional Chinese filmmaker, who produced and edited the footage and songs that are used.
