The Yucatán Peninsula (Spanish: Península de Yucatán), in southeastern Mexico, separates the Caribbean Sea from the Gulf of Mexico, with the northern coastline on the Yucatán Channel. The peninsula lies east of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, a northwestern geographic partition separating the region of Central America from the rest of North America.
The proper derivation of the word Yucatán is widely debated. Hernando Cortes, in the first of his letters to Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, claimed that the name Yucatán comes from a misunderstanding. In this telling, the first Spanish explorers asked what the area was called and the response they received, "Yucatan," was a Yucatec Maya word meaning "I don't understand what you're saying." Others claim that the source of the name is the Nahuatl (Aztec) word Yocatlān, "place of richness."
The Yucatán Peninsula comprises a significant proportion of the ancient Maya Lowlands (although the Maya culture extended south of the Yucatán Peninsula, through present Guatemala and into Honduras and highland Chiapas). There are many Maya archaeological sites throughout the peninsula; some of the better-known are Chichen Itza, Tulum and Uxmal.Indigenous Maya and Mestizos of partial Maya descent make up a sizable portion of the region's population, and Mayan languages are widely spoken there.

listen ), is a federal republic in North America. It is bordered on the north by the United States; on the south and west by the Pacific Ocean; on the southeast by Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea; and on the east by the Gulf of Mexico. Covering almost two million square kilometres (over 760,000 sq mi), Mexico is the fifth largest country in the Americas by total area and the 13th largest independent nation in the world. With an estimated population of over 120 million, it is the eleventh most populous country and the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world and the second most populous country in Latin America. Lonely Planet is the largest travel guide book publisher in the world. The company is owned by American billionaire Brad Kelley's NC2 Media, which bought it in 2013 from BBC Worldwide for US$77 million (the equivalent of £45.5 million in May 2014) after it was valued at US$250 million in 2008.
Originally called "Lonely Planet Publications", the company changed its name to "Lonely Planet" in July 2009 to reflect its broad travel industry coverage and an emphasis on digital products. After the Let's Go travel guide series that was founded in 1960, the Lonely Planet books were the second series of travel books aimed at backpackers and other low-cost travellers. As of 2011, the company had sold 120 million books since inception and by early 2014, it had sold around 11 million units of its travel apps.
As of 2014, Lonely Planet's largest office is located in Footscray, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, but its Franklin, Tennessee, United States (U.S.) office is the company's de facto headquarters. Other Lonely Planet offices are spread throughout the world, in locations such as London, United Kingdom (U.K.); Beijing, China; and Delhi, India.
The Culture is a fictional interstellar anarchist utopian society created by the Scottish writer Iain M. Banks, which features in a number of his space opera novels and works of short fiction, collectively called the Culture series.
In the series, the Culture is composed of several inter-bred humanoid species, as well as machines with intelligences ranging from basic computers, to human-equivalent drones, to superintelligent artificial intelligences called Minds. The Culture's economy is maintained automatically by its non-sentient machines, with high-level work entrusted to the Minds' subroutines, which allows its humanoid and drone citizens to indulge their passions, romances, hobbies, or other activities, without servitude. Many of the series' protagonists are humanoids who choose to work for the Culture's elite diplomatic or espionage organisations, and interact with other civilisations whose citizens hold wildly different ideologies, morals, and technologies.
The Culture has a grasp of technology which is advanced relative to most of the other civilisations which share the galaxy. There are a few Elder civilizations far more advanced than the Culture, but they tend to keep to themselves. Other civilizations have "Sublimed," or transitioned to some unknowable higher dimension or state of existence and have apparently lost interest in the mundane goings on of more corporeal beings. Most of the Culture's citizens do not live on planets but in or on artificial habitats, such as huge orbitals, or on ships, the largest of which are home to billions of individuals. Biologically, the Culture's citizens have been genetically enhanced to live for centuries, and have modified mental control over their physiology, including the ability to introduce a variety of psychoactive drugs into their systems, change gender, or switch off pain.

To the rhythm of mariachis and traditional dancing, the film by Pierre Brouwers guides you across Yucatan, this Mexican state that juts out into the Caribbean sea. From the white sandy beaches of the Maya river to huge green expanses where the sites of Calakmul or Coba barely emerge from the forest, the cameras take you to not only the most prestigious Maya sites, but also other lesser known locations that from an archaeological perspective are just as interesting. Spectacular caves and rocks, mangroves and nature reserves form the décor in which one of America’s most fascinating civilizations developed and flourished.
Here is the best of my drone footage from the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico's most popular tourist destination. The Cancun Airport is your gateway to so many beautiful beach destinations that are the perfect places for a vacation. Cancun is the chaotic touristic center of the Yucatán, but it also has some of the best beaches I've ever seen. Most parts have extremely big waves, a lot of people and a very social vibe. It's definitely a great stop for a dip in the ocean after a long flight. If you want to see Maya ruins, Tulum is the destination to go! It has some beautiful white sanded beaches, a relaxed feeling and countless activities to do including Maya ruins & cenotes in the nearby area. If you want to see a lake with crystal clear water, head on to lake Bacalar down south, closer to the Be...

Over Christmas 2014, Nicole and I took a couple of weeks off work, flew into Cancun, hired a car, and spent 2 weeks driving around the Yucatan peninsula. The places in this clip are Valladolid, Chichen Itza, Samula Cenote, Ria Lagartos (for the flamingos), Izamel (the city they painted yellow for the papal visit), Uxmal (more ruins), Merida (where they used to make rope), at the end is a tasting menu at a great restaurant called Ku'uk - worth checking out if you are in Merida, the owner was kind enough to give us a tour of the kitchen and herb garden when we finished our meal.
This is Las Coloradas Yucatan, the rainbow salt flats of Rio Lagartos Mexico. It took us 4 trips to get this one right, and finally we got a our quadcopter the DJI Inspire 1 drone flight in! You can find pools of green, orange, and pink here. These are ancient drying beds for salt, the more pink the water, the higher the concentration. This place is in the middle of nowhere, and is a helluva thing to see! It's similar to Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, just add a little bit more color ;) In our 4 visits to Las Coloradas, we only saw about 5 other people visiting. It's basically unheard of, and you can spend the whole day by yourself there. The drive from Merida or Cancun is about 3 hours, but it's worth it as there's lots of other things to see up there as well. Flamingos, Mud Baths, Dolphins,...

Come to this former Mexican fishing village turned resort town to join legions of fellow sun worshippers – just don’t forget to pack sunscreen. Your Cancun tour should stop at the Acuario Interactivo, where you can meet mariachi-singing dolphins and other friendly sealife. Explore the vast historical offerings of Cancun by heading to the Yucatan interior, where you’ll find ancient Mayan cities available to tour. A day trip to Chichen Itza, one of the world’s Seven Modern Wonders, is another must. Wander through its ancient streets and take in the temples, an observatory, and even a sporting arena. Travel video about destination Yucatán in Mexico. It is in Uxmal where historic Mexico is at its most beautiful and that our journey through the millennia begins, along the Yucatan Peninsula, land of Maya culture. The Cuadrángulo De Los Monjas comprises four buildings with many entrances that lead into various small rooms, typical of Puuc architecture. The forty two metre high Fortune Teller Pyramid is situated in the centre of the complex and the main entrance to the Nuns’ Quadrangle dates back to the 9th century and is flanked on both sides by columned halls. Since the 10th century the remains of the Pre-Columbian architecture of Chichen Itza have combined two cultures, the Maya and the Toltecs. The total number of steps that lead up to the temple, including those on each of its four side...
In this Cancun travel guide, I travel around Cancun and the Yucatan Peninsula, including taking a boat to Isla Mujeres (the small island just off the coast of Cancun) for some snorkeling, visiting the market at Parque Palapas in downtown Cancun for some tasty snacks, and exploring Coba, the former Mayan city, which is home to the Nohoch Mul pyramid, the tallest temple in the region that you're allowed to climb. * The host, Matt Stabile, of this video is the founder and editor-in-chief of the travel site http://www.TheExpeditioner.com. He also served as Director, Editor and Foley Artist for this production.

First Peoples - Americas I HD Documentary For many years, scientists and archaeologists thought that the first Homo sapiens arrived in the Americas roughly 13,000 years ago. Then, in 2008 a team of archaeologists discovered the remains of a group of prehistoric humans in a cave on the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Radio-carbon dating revealed that these early humans died roughly 13,500 years ago, suggesting that the earliest humans arrived in the Americas much earlier than previously thought. Forbidden Archeology of Lost Ancient Cities looks at pharaohs' magnificent tombs and the sacred temples erected in honor of the gods. However their cities disappeared mysteriously off the face of the earth as if swallowed up by the desert sands. We also travel back to the magnificent Mayan cities of Uxmal, Tulum, Chichén Itza and the capital Palenque, with its breathtaking pyramid built by master mathematicians. Being that it is located on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, it is, to this day, one of the most picturesque places in the world. If we imagine the Forbidden Archaeology of humanity as giant museum, containing all Forbidden knowledge on this topic, then we shall find that several of the rooms of this forbidden museum have been locked. Scientists have locked away the Forbidden art...
Sixty-five million years ago, disaster struck the Earth. An asteroid or comet around 10km in diameter slammed into what is now the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. While the idea was ridiculed at first, this event is now widely believed to be the reason the dinosaurs became extinct. This realization led to a rallying of scientists and engineers around the world to detect and monitor the asteroids in the heavens, and if need be, to be prepared to deflect one from hitting us.
