It is one of the seventeen Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which have been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
In 1601, Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, ordered all the feudal lords in Western Japan to contribute to the construction of Nijō Castle, which was completed during the reign of Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1626. Parts of Fushimi Castle, such as the main tower and the karamon, were moved here in 1625-26. It was built as the Kyoto residence of the Tokugawa Shoguns. The Tokugawa Shogunate used Edo as the capital city, but Kyoto continued to be the home of the Imperial Court. Kyoto Imperial Palace is located north-east of Nijo Castle.
Nijo-jo (Nijojo or Nijo Castle) is located western central part of the Kyoto City Japan. It is designated as a UNESCO world heritage site. It is one of the finest Japanese Castles. The castle was originally built in 1603 as the official Kyoto residence of the first Tokugawa Shogun, Ieyasu. It was completed in 1626 by the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu, with the addition of some structures transferred from Fushimi Castle (built in Momoyama period; 1573-1614). Nijo Castle is one of the finest examples of early Edo period and Momoyama culture in Japan, as it makes splendid use of early Edo period building designs, lavish paintings, and carvings that Iemitsu generously commissioned. In 1867, when Yoshinobu, the fifteenth Tokugawa Shogun returned sovereignty to the Emperor, the cast...
The Nijo Castle was built in the year 1626 as a residence for the Tokugawa Family. After 1867, the Castle became Imperial property and in 1939 it was donated to the City of Kyoto. Ever since then, this beautiful castle has been open to the public. Basically, the fortification consists of one external moat and stone wall, the Ninomaru Palace and gardens inside of it, and an inner moat and wall keeping the Honmaru Palace and the respective gardens inside. This castle used to have a five-story turret, but it was destroyed by a fire in the year 1750. Nowadays, this wonderful example of traditional Japanese architecture and art/decoration is visited by lots of tourist from Japan and many other countries. It's Thursday October 2, 2014. It's still humid out. Me and Rie had the day off so we headed out to Kyoto to go see the Nijo Castle. We also enjoyed relaxing along the Kamo river and the general atmosphere of Kyoto. Music: 1.Nevada City by Huma-Huma 2. Sunday Drive by Silent Partner Camera: Canon 650D
Nijo Castle in Kyoto was finished in 1626 and was the Shogun's residence when in Kyoto. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with historical importance as the site where the Shogunate formally relinquished ruling power to the Emperor in 1868. Nijo Castle (Nijo-jo) is famous for its inner Ninomaru palace (which has a rigid no photos/filming policy) as well as numerous gardens that are beautiful in spring. The Karamon main gate with its highly ornate design and gold leaf still impresses visitors after many centuries. Nijo-jo is also conveniently located, right next to the Nijojomae subway station.
I walked to Nijo Castle today because HaggisMacfee said "I'ld want to see Nijo castle". Nijo Castle is so close to my house! :) 近くに住んでいながら、まともに見た事なかった二条城に行って来ました。 桜のピークが過ぎた時期で、観光客の方も少なく良かったです。 庭も広くて綺麗。 私もこんな別荘が欲しい!!!!
Kyoto Gosho is the former Imperial Palace, located at the center of Kyoto. The large luxurious Kyoto Gyoen National Garden surrounding the palace and the nearby Sento Gosho Palace, the former residence of the retired emperor, is a relaxing spot with rich greenery enjoyed by the people of Kyoto. The park measures 700 meters from east to west and 1,300 meters from north to south. Before the Imperial Palace was moved to Tokyo in the latter half of the 19th century, this vast park was the residential quarters for nobles. Today, it is a public garden with pebbled promenades, green lawns and seasonal trees and flowers. To the southwest of the palace stands Nijo Castle, built in the early 17th century. Ninomaru-goten, renovated in 1626, is a building renowned as a priceless example of the archite...
Known as the Kyoto residence of the famous leader Tokugawa Ieyasu, (the first shogun of the Edo Period), Nijō Castle is a stronghold that represents the prestige and power of the mighty leader known as the unifier of Japan. Construction on the castle was begun in 1603 and finished 23 years later by Ieyasu’s grandson Iemitsu. In 1939, the castle was donated to the city of Kyoto and was officially opened to the public. Enjoy exploring and learning about Ieyasu’s dramatic and interesting life- no one said history had to be boring! With hundreds of varieties of flora as well, Nijō-jō is also a great place to view some of Japan’s treasured seasonal beauty.

A day in Kyoto! Even though we wanted to go to Kiyomizu-dera temple in the beginning, we didn't feel like dealing with the crowd again so soon (remember Disneyland?) and took a safer route going to Nijo-ji (Nijo castle) instead. It was a good idea to wear kimono, since we didn't have to pay to enter. Japanese garden - a great place to relax and enjoy a cup of my favourite matcha! 2.1.2016 http://sagdeyev.com

Today we take a journey through Kyoto’s Nijo Castle. Nijo Castle (二条城, Nijōjō) was built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period (1603-1867). Nijo Castle has three important areas: the Honmaru, Ninomaru, and some gardens that encircle both. The Ninomaru Palace served as the residence and office of the shogun during his visits to Kyoto. Honmaru was the site of a second palace complex and a five-story castle keep; both structures were destroyed by fires in the 18th century and were not rebuilt. These vlogs might seem a bit tedious and boring, but tokyo is just around the corner!!
This Castle was AMAZING I recommend anyone that can go there!
We went to the Kyoto Imperial Palace and realized that it wasn't as much of a tourist destination as we thought it might be. Then we took shelter from the rain in a former elementary school turned manga museum. Finally we checked out Nijo Castle which was really cool. I wasn't able to film inside of the castle itself, but there were recreations of how the shogun would meet his daimyo and conduct business.
Start at Byodo-in the pheonix temple, attend the Buddhist rites at Manpukuji, visit Nijo Castle, then Daigo-ji, run with Inari, the fox, messenger of the gods in Fushimi, and trim the pines at Ginkakuji, the golden pavilion
Celebrating the day with the fam for Cecile's birthday. We just ate sushi at Nijo castle and walked around Valley Fair/Santana Row. Afterwards the bweesets went to wal-mart again... and ended the day with Taco Bell. -"The love of a family is life's greatest blessing"
