The Irish Republic (Irish: Poblacht na hÉireann or Saorstát Éireann) was a revolutionary state that declared its independence from Britain in January 1919. In theory the Republic covered the whole island of Ireland, but by 1920 its functional control was limited to only 21 of Ireland's 32 counties, and British state forces maintained presence across much of the north-east, as well as Cork, Dublin and other major towns.
Its origins date back to the Easter Rising of 1916, when Irish republicans seized key locations in Dublin and proclaimed an Irish Republic. The insurrection was crushed, but the survivors united under a reformed Sinn Féin party to campaign for a republic. The party won a clear majority of largely uncontested seats in the 1918 general election and formed the first Dáil (legislature) of Ireland in Dublin in January 1919. Republicans then established a government (Aireacht), a court system and a police force. At the same time, the Irish Volunteers, who came under the control of the Dáil and became known as the Irish Republican Army, fought against British state forces in the Irish War of Independence.

Including: the Norman and Tudor conquest of Ireland, the break away from the Roman Catholic Church, the Union of the Crowns, the various Irish Rebellions, Oliver Cromwell's effect on Ireland, Irish joining the Union, the Irish War for Independence, the following Civil War, and the recent violence in Northern Ireland known as The Troubles. Earlier this year, VICE News filmed with a republican youth movement in Ireland called Na Fianna Éireann (“Warriors of Ireland” in English), a small group of around 30 boys considered to be hardline dissidents. They support a violent IRA splinter group known as the Continuity IRA, and believe that a renewed armed struggle is needed to free Ireland from British occupation in the North. Considered “junior terrorists” by some, the Na Fianna sees itself simply as Ireland’s true republican boy scouts, training with the main aim of being ready for a new resistance — a fight that they believe is inevitable. VICE News followed Na Fianna members as they carried out "bush training" in the mountains, and attended their Easter Rising march through Dublin, to get an idea of what the young face of dis...

The chorus of "Amhrán na bhFiann" or in English, "A Soldier's Song", (pron: ow-rawn nuh bee-yunn) is the national anthem of the Republic of Ireland. The lyrics were written by Peadar Kearney and, together with Patrick Heeny, set it to music. The song was first published in Irish Freedom in 1912 and quickly became the most popular of the Irish Volunteer's marching songs. In 1926 Amhrán na bhFiann/ The Soldier's Song was adopted as the National Anthem of Ireland, replacing the unofficial "God Save Ireland". FIRST VERSE: We'll sing a song, a soldier's song With cheering, rousing chorus As round our blazing fires we throng, The starry heavens o'er us; Impatient for the coming fight, And as we wait the mornings light here in the silence of the night We'll chant a soldier's song. CHORUS: So...

The Irish Republican Army (IRA) is any of several armed movements in Ireland in the 20th and 21st centuries dedicated to Irish republicanism, the belief that all of Ireland should be an independent republic. The first known use of the term "Irish Republican Army" occurred in the Fenian raids on Canada in the 1860s.[1] The original Irish Republican Army formed by 1917 from those Irish Volunteers who refused to enlist in the British Army during World War I. It was the army of the Irish Republic, declared by Dáil Éireann in 1919. Most Irish people dispute the claims of more recently created organizations that insist that they are the only legitimate descendants of the original IRA, often referred to as the "Old IRA". The playwright and former IRA member Brendan Behan once said that the firs...

The prosperity of the Celtic Tiger years has given way to the sudden crash, the turbulence of the euro crisis, and the loss of our sovereignty to the faceless technocrats of Europe and the Imf. Our leaders seem impotent and rage, bewilderment and despair have swept through Irish society. Was It For This? delves into the Irish psyche to answer the questions: What happened to our hopes and dreams? What is at the heart of the sense of betrayal that we feel? In the rush to modernity, did we throw away everything of true value? Have we lost the ideals of nationhood and patriotism set out by those who dreamt of the Irish Republic?john Waters remarkable...

Thomas Hennessey explores how the War transformed the nature of the Irish and Ulster questions from devolved self-government within the Uk to a free Irish republic outside the British Empire, considering such influential figures as de Valera and Michael Collins, and issues such as conscription. He examines both this process of re-evaluation, and the vital question of the consequences for Northern Ireland today.

They include people like the First World War marksman, Con Healy, who though dying of tuberculosis went on to become a hero fighting for his o...

The conflict was waged between two opposing groups of Irish republicans over the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The forces of the "Provisional Government" (which became the Free State in December 1922) supported the Treaty, while the Republican opposition saw it as a betrayal of the Irish Republic (which had been proclaimed during the Easter Rising). Many of those who fought in the conflict had been members of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) during the War of Independence. The Civil War was won by the Free State forces,

DECLARING INDEPENDENCE IN 1916 WAS ASTONISHING IN THE COLONIAL WORLD. THE ARMED STRUGGLE , DISORGANIZED AT THE LAST MOMENT, WAS EASILY CRUSHED. THE POPULACE SEEMED UNAWARE THAT INDEPENDENCE COULD BE WON. BUT THE CALLOUS EXECUTIONS OF THE LEADERS STIRRED THEIR MORAL SENSE. THE POWER OF THE RHETORIC IN THE PROCLAMATION CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF ALL WHO READ IT OR HEARD IT REPEATED. ITS CLARITY NURTURED FUTURE ACTION AND IS RELEVANT TODAY IN ISSUES OF NORTHERN IRELAND.
