Choeung Ek (Khmer: ជើងឯក [cəəŋ aek]), the site of a former orchard and mass grave of victims of the Khmer Rouge - killed between 1975 and 1979 - about 17 kilometres (11 mi) south of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, is the best-known of the sites known as The Killing Fields, where the Khmer Rouge regime executed over one million people between 1975 and 1979. Mass graves containing 8,895 bodies were discovered at Choeung Ek after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime. Many of the dead were former political prisoners who were kept by the Khmer Rouge in their Tuol Sleng detention center.
Today, Choeung Ek is a memorial, marked by a Buddhist stupa. The stupa has acrylic glass sides and is filled with more than 5,000 human skulls. Some of the lower levels are opened during the day so that the skulls can be seen directly. Many have been shattered or smashed in.
Tourists are encouraged by the Cambodian government to visit Choeung Ek. Apart from the stupa, there are pits from which the bodies were exhumed. Human bones still litter the site.

A visit to the Choeung Ek killing fields. Rotary World Peace Fellows, as part of their 3 month fellowship with the Peace Centre at Chulalongkorn University, visited Cambodia to learn more about the post-conflict reconstruction work taking place there. Here, we visit one of the most infamous killing fields in Cambodia, Choeung Ek which is 30mins from Phnom Penh city centre.

There were many per say many killing fields all around the country so it's not correct to think that there was only one. Terry takes some video clips around Choeung Ek to help preserve the memory of all the innocent victims of Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge. "I have to admit I felt awkward filming here. The Killing Fields are a number of sites in Cambodia where large numbers of people were killed and buried by the Khmer Rouge regime, during its rule of the country from 1975 to 1979, immediately after the end of the Cambodian Civil War. The best known monument of the Killing Fields is Choeung Ek. Today, it is the site of a Buddhist memorial to the terror, and Tuol Sleng has a museum commemorating the genocide. The memorial park has been constructed around the mass graves of many thousands of victims in Choeung Ek. The utmost respect is given to the victims of the massacres through signs and tribute sections throughout the park. Many dozens of mass graves are visible above ground, several which have not been excavated as of yet. Commonly, bones and clothing surface after heavy rainfalls du...

The Choeung Ek Genocidal Center in Phnom Penh, Cambodia was one of more than 300 'killing fields' in operation during Pol Pot's dictatorship during the late 1970's. We visited the center and were shocked by the atrocities that occurred on this site. Travel Vlog 102 MUSIC - Niki and the Dove - Mother Protect (Goldroom remix)
The Choeung Ek Killing Fields are one of the main tourist attractions in Cambodia now-a-days, the question is, is this site ethically acceptable?
We head to two site in Phnom Penh that reveal the dark side of Cambodia's recent history: the Choeung Ek Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED. In 1975, the Khmer Rouge took control of Cambodia and changed the fate of the country forever. Nearly 20,000 prisoners were interrogated at the prison, S-21, and many ultimately met their end at the killings fields. In this video, I show you a glimpse of what it's like to visit these sites of genocide. The experience was difficult for me to process. If I display nervous smiling or laughter, it's simply because I was uncomfortable with the things I was seeing. No disrespect or disregard to the severity of the event recounted was intended. Thank you for your understanding. ★★★★★★ CONTEST: Win a postcard from me...

I actually touch some of the skulls on the crown to try to connect and to convey a sense of compassion to these innocent soul who have died needlessly.
This was my visit to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek near Cambodia's capitol of Phnom Penh. Between 1975-1979 a madman named Pol Pot led an army called the Khmer Rouge of Cambodia to murder over 2 million of their own people. A cleansing of the country followed. Over 25% of Cambodia's men, women and children were tortured and murdered in 4 years. When they took over all business, schools and anything else was shut down in 48 hrs. Within 3 weeks all cities were evacuated and people sent to the country side to be murdered or worked til their death. There are 300 of these killings fields in Cambodia. There were 40,000 men, women and children tortured and murdered at this killing field. This was the saddest place I have ever been in my whole life. I have included a link to this killing field...

I've provided further reading and links to other videos in a blog post that accompanies this short episode if you are interested. at http://reallifeishorror.blogspot.com/ Do forgive me for the title of the video "dark tourism", I honestly wasn't sure what to title something like this and mean no disrespect to anyone who suffered at these sites. This video contains photographs and information on the following places: 1. The killing fields (phnom penh, Cambodia) a...
Choeung Ek killing fields as tourist attractions on the outskirts of Phnom Penh is Choeung Ek, better known as the extermination camps. In this terrible place there are buried in mass graves, more than 8,000 people, about collective graves there is a monument to the memory of the victims. Many of the victims who perished here first passed through S-21 facilities (Toul Sleng Museum today).Undoubtedly one of the hardest points of the visit are the shelves full of human skulls. This video recorded 29 November 2015.Thank you for visiting my channel. Few countries have left more of an impression upon me than Cambodia. I've now visited four times and each and every time I had a completely different experience. I learned what I loved and what I disliked about the country. In particular, I became fond of cities such as Siem Reap and Battambang whereas I found Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville to be less appealing. The shining star attraction I could never get enough of was the Temples of Angkor. Cambodia is a country with a tragic past; however, the future appears to be brighter as it becomes more frequented by tourists every year. The Archaeology of Cheung Ek in Phnom Penh by Phon Kaseka of the Royal Academy of Cambodia. Cheung Ek in southwest Phnom Penh is more recently known as the Killing Fields, but has a longer history than - a circular earthwork and kilns found in archaeological contexts indicate that the site was a ceramics production site since the 7th century. This lecture is part of the Capitals Archaeology series organised by SEAMEO SPAFA, held at the Siam Society in Bangkok on 11 August 2015. In this series we focus on the capitals of Southeast Asia and discuss two aspects, the past (archaeology) and present (urban conservation).
