Ashok Kumar (13 October 1911 - 10 December 2001), born Kumudlal Ganguly in Bhagalpur, Bengal attained iconic status in Indian cinema.
The Government of India honoured him with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1988 and the Padma Bhushan in 1998 for his contributions towards Indian cinema.
Ashok Kumar who was respectfully called 'Dadamoni', started his carrer with Bombay Talkies production 'Jeevan Naiya' in 1936. Later, Devika Rani and Ashok Kumar did a string of films like Izzat (1937), Savitri (1937) and Nirmala (1938). He acquitted himself creditably and came away with several hits including most famously Main Ban ka Panchhi. He acted in fewer films in the 1980s and 1990s and occasionally appeared on television, most famously anchoring the first Indian soap opera Hum Log and appearing as the title character in the unforgettable Bahadur Shah Zafar.
Ashok Kumar's last film role was in Aankhon Mein Tum Ho in 1997. Besides acting, he was an avid painter and a practitioner of homeopathy. Altogether, he starred in over 275 films and has done more than 30 Bengali dramas.

Ashok Kumar
Ashok Kumar (13 October 1911 – 10 December 2001), born Kumudlal Ganguly and also fondly called Dadamoni, was an Indian film actor who attained iconic status in Indian cinema. He was honoured in 1988 with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest national award for cinema artists, by the Government of India and also received the Padma Bhushan in 1999 for his contributions to Indian cinema. He is considered to be one of India's finest ever actors, playing leading, negative and character roles with equal panache.
Family
Ashok Kumar was born Kumudlal Ganguly in Bhagalpur, then in the Bengal Presidency and now lying in Bihar. His father, Kunjlal Ganguly, was a lawyer while his mother, Gouri Devi, was a home-maker. Kumudlal (as he was then known) was the eldest of four children. A couple of years younger to him was his only sister, Sati Devi, who was married at a very young age to Sashadhar Mukherjee and became the matriarch of a large "film family". More than fourteen years younger than Kumudlal was his next brother, Kalyan (b.1926), who later took the screen name Anoop Kumar, and youngest of all was Abhas (b.1929), whose screen name was Kishore Kumar and who became a phenomenally successful playback singer of Hindi films. Although the eldest of the three brothers by several years, Ashok Kumar outlived his siblings. In fact, he stopped celebrating his birthday after his youngest brother, Kishore, died on that very day (Ashok's birthday) in 1987.

They are befriended by a petty thief and pickpocket by the name of Raja, who lives with a young street dancer named Rani and her dad, Baba. When Baba finds out that Laxmi may be related to Raja and that Munna may be their child, he asks them to leave the house. Raja then takes them to Ashok, and to Laxmi's shock she finds her once-loving husband living with another woman, much younger and prettier, by the name of Sangita. Watch what happens when Sangita asks Laxmi to be the maidservant, and Ashok refuses to recognize his wife and child.

Ashok Kumar - Biography
Ashok Kumar (13 October 1911 - 10 December 2001), born Kumudlal Ganguly in Bhagalpur, Bengal attained iconic status in Indian cinema. The Government of India honoured him with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1988 and the Padma Bhushan in 1998 for his contributions towards Indian cinema. Ashok Kumar who was respectfully called 'Dadamoni', started his carrer with Bombay Talkies production 'Jeevan Naiya' in 1936. Later, Devika Rani and Ashok Kumar did a string of films like Izzat (1937), Savitri (1937) and Nirmala (1938). He acquitted himself creditably and came away with several hits including most famously Main Ban ka Panchhi. He acted in fewer films in the 1980s and 1990s and occasionally appeared on television, most famously anchoring the first Indian soap opera Hum Log and appearing as...

The movie stars Ashok Kumar (cast after the original hero had eloped with the producer's wife and leading lady) and Devika Rani (the producer's wife who decided to come back) in the lead roles.
Movie Synopsis:
Pratap (Ashok Kumar) and Kasturi (Devika Rani) are childhood friends, deeply in love with each other. Unfortunately, Pratap is a Brahmin and Kasturi an untouchable (achhut). Social mores of the time (the movies is set in the distant past, probably before 1900) preclude any possibility of the two ever uniting.
Pratap gets married to Meera (Manorama), while Kasturi marries Manu (Anwar). Both of them are unable to forget their first love, but try hard to make their respective marriages work. Unfortunately, the situation gets compounded by the fact that Manu has a first wife, Kajri, with whom he is estranged due to excessive interference from his in-laws. The hitherto smug Kajri suddenly feels threatened by the arrival of a new woman in her husband's life.
Meera is resigned to destiny until Kajri poisons her mind. The two of them hatch a diabolical conspiracy to discredit Kasturi in the eyes of Manu. They take Kasturi along to a mela in the neighbouring village, and then abandon her there. All alone in the unknown place, Kasturi has no choice but to hitch a ride with Pratap, who has a food stall there. Meera and Kajari then tell Mannu that Kasturi is with Pratap.
The enraged Manu attacks Pratap when they arrive at the railroad crossing where he is working as the attendant. There ensures a fistcuff between the two, even as a train rushes towards them. Desperate to save them, Kasturi rushes towards the train imploring the driver to stop and in the process gets herself killed. That act of selflessness makes her a martyr in the eyes of the villagers, despite her lowly origins.

Plot : Parineeta is a 1953 Bollywood film starring Ashok Kumar and Meena Kumari, based upon the 1914 Bengali novel of the same name by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay, which was earlier filmed in Bengali. The film was directed by Bimal Roy. This version of the film is considered by many to be the most faithful adaptation of the novella, particularly due to Meena Kumari's interpretation of the role of Lalita.
Lalita is an orphaned niece of an impoverished clerk named Gurucharan. She falls in love with Shekhar, son of their rich landlord neighbor. Gurucharan has to mortgage his house to Shekhar’s father in order to get one of his daughters married as he is heavily debt ridden. Shekhar’s father, often chides him about his overdue loan and a day comes when, completely pressed on all sides, Gurucharan is forced to take advantage of the altruistic offer of an interest free loan made by a wealthy young man named Girin. This gives rise to an ugly misunderstanding that Lalita has been "sold" to Girin. What happens thereafter forms the gripping rest of this great story of perfect love. Beautiful part of this movie is dialogue and communication between Meena Kumari and Ashok Kumar.
