Peter Hyams is a unique filmmaker. He writes most of his films. He shoots all of his films himself. And he comes from a historic show business family whose influence took him from being a top-level jazz drummer to being a TV news anchor to being a filmmaker. His 29th feature in his 30 year film career is Enemies Closer, his 3rd film with Jean-Claude Van Damme. He spoke to David Poland about his beginnings, his career, and his new film.

As the military agents attempt to capture Brubaker (James Brolin), Caulfield (Elliott Gould) rushes to rescue him.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Astronauts Charles Brubaker, John Walker, and Peter Willis (James Brolin, O.J. Simpson, and Sam Waterston, respectively) are hailed as heroes when they become the first men to be rocketed to Mars. Actually the space travelers are as phony as their mission controller, Dr. James Kelloway (Hal Holbrook); to avert a failure that might cost the space program its funding, the Mars-bound vessel has been sent up without a crew, while the helmeted astronauts sit on a movie soundstage, pretending to be in outer space for the benefit of the TV cameras. Unfortunately the Mars ship crashes on arrival, making the astronaut trio thoroughly expendable. Investigative reporter Robert Caulfield (Elliott Gould), who's smelled a rat all along, races against time to prevent NASA from "terminating" the hapless astronauts in order to cover up the conspiracy.

Peter Hyams' 1984 follow-up to Stanely Kubrick's 1968 classic "2001: A Space Odyssey". A much more conventional sci-fi film, but still good, mostly thanks to Roy Scheider's great performance as Heywood Floyd. This trailer came from the first ever DVD release of "2001".

Peter Hyams
Peter Hyams (born July 26, 1943) is an American director, screenwriter and cinematographer, probably best known for directing the 1981 science fiction thriller Outland, Capricorn One, 2010 (the sequel to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey), the action/comedy Running Scared, the comic book adaptation Timecop, the action film Sudden Death (both starring Jean-Claude Van Damme), and the horror films The Relic and End of Days.
Early life
Hyams was born in New York City, New York, the son of Ruth Hurok and Barry Hyams, who was a theatrical producer and publicist on Broadway. His maternal grandfather was Sol Hurok, the Russian Jewish impresario. His stepfather was blacklisted conductor Arthur Lief. His sister is casting director Nessa Hyams. His son John Hyams is also a film director. His nephew is Stephen Hyams.
Career
Hyams studied art and music at Hunter College and Syracuse University, before working as a producer/anchorman for WHDH-TV and later WBBM-TV. He has described himself as "one of the very few writer/directors of major films who also photographs his own pictures". During his time with CBS (where he worked from 1964 to 1970), he began to shoot documentary films. Hyams moved to Los Angeles in 1970 where he sold his first screenplay, T.R. Baskin, to Paramount Pictures in 1971.

Rainer has directed short films and worked in production with directors such as Francis Coppola, Neil Burger, Terry Gilliam, and Gus Van Sant. As an actor she has worked with directors such as Janusz Kaminski, Michael Rhymer, Peter Chelsom, Peter Hyams, Robert Downey Sr. A graduate of NYU Film, her thesis short film Plague Circuit won the Texas Award at the USA Film Festival. In 2007 she was a recipient of Art Production Fund’s Artist Residency Grant at the Fondation Claude Monet in Giverny, France. Artist Statement: "All wars are the result of a failure to grieve." - Martin Prechtel. The power of imagination and creativity can lift us out of modes of oppression and conflict. One can heal through creativity and transcend disputes and anger, journey to new places of peace and wonder that still hold strong emotion and sadness but are driven by the vital energy of the unexpected in creativity and personal expression.
"A Little Wonder" was commissioned for Six Scents Parfums, an interdisciplinary collaboration between contemporary artists and fashion designers. Six Scents Series Three is an exploration into the nature of childhood memories and the influence of adolescence on identity. Created by a distinct group of designers, artists and perfumers, these limited edition fragrances are designed to represent a global range of contemporary views on creativity and culture. Each of the films for Series Three portray the unavoidable transition from innocence to experience. "A Little Wonder", by Rainer Judd, is beautiful short film explores imagination and creativity as a passageway out of an environment of conflict.
A portion of the proceeds from Six Scents Series Three will be donated to War Child International (www.warchild.ca). War Child works with children all over the world to reduce poverty, to provide education and to defend their rights. They work tirelessly to help children whose lives have been torn apart by conflict, providing them with the means to build a brighter future.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Rainer Judd is an actor, filmmaker and artist. Currently she is in development with her feature film project, All I Remember. Both the feature project and her short film Remember Back, Remember When (2008) are autobiographical. She recently completed the short film, A Little Wonder, as part of the Six Scents Series Three perfume project. Rainer has directed short films and worked in production with directors such as Francis Coppola, Neil Burger, Terry Gilliam, and Gus Van Sant. As an actor she has worked with directors such as Janusz Kaminski, Michael Rhymer, Peter Chelsom, Peter Hyams, Robert Downey Sr. A graduate of NYU Film, her thesis short film Plague Circuit won the Texas Award at the USA Film Festival. In 2007 she was a recipient of Art Production Fund’s Artist Residency Grant at the Fondation Claude Monet in Giverny, France. Rainer’s drawings and photos have been in group exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, and Austin.
Rainer has served as Board President of JUDD Foundation since 2003. Founded by her father, the late artist Donald Judd, JUDD Foundation promotes understanding of and access to his work. She also serves on the Board of Blue Ocean Institute, founded by marine biologist Dr. Carl Safina to inspire a closer relationship with the sea through science, art, and literature.

Une musique un peu informe à base boîte à rythme, quelques lignes de basse synthétique et des choeurs vaporeux passés dans un vocoder. Une musique au débit kilométrique, puisque quand le personnage principal remet les pieds dans le même bar un peu plus tard dans le film, c’est (à peu près) la même chose qui passe.
Vagues répétitives, instruments du futur, musiciens mutants et extra-terrestres, musique de demain.

Huitième épisode de CGM, l'émission consacrée aux origines de l'image de synthèse au cinéma, qui détaille les premiers effets spéciaux calculés par ordinateur pour le grand écran.
Après TRON et les films inspirés par le jeu vidéo, on continue avec la création de la compagnie phare Digital Productions et son travail sur The Last Starfighter et 2010 : The Year We Make Contact, tous deux sortis en 1984.
Tout un programme donc, sachant que j'ai pu notamment discuter avec deux des personnes ayant travaillé sur ces films : Larry Yaeger, alors développeur software sur The Last Starfighter et co-auteur de la simulation de Jupiter dans 2010, ainsi que Jeffrey Okun, qui avait la lourde tâche de coordinateur des effets visuels sur The Last Starfighter.
Pour l'épisode 9, nous nous éloignerons pendant un temps du cinéma hollywoodien pour nous concentrer sur l'animation japonaise, avec un focus sur les deux premiers long-métrages d'animation nippons à avoir utilisé de l'image de synthèse : Golgo 13 (1983) et Lensman (1984).

Peter Hyams is a unique filmmaker. He writes most of his films. He shoots all of his films himself. And he comes from a historic show business family whose influence took him from being a top-level jazz drummer to being a TV news anchor to being a filmmaker. His 29th feature in his 30 year film career is Enemies Closer, his 3rd film with Jean-Claude Van Damme. He spoke to David Poland about his beginnings, his career, and his new film.

As the military agents attempt to capture Brubaker (James Brolin), Caulfield (Elliott Gould) rushes to rescue him.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Astronauts Charles Brubaker, John Walker, and Peter Willis (James Brolin, O.J. Simpson, and Sam Waterston, respectively) are hailed as heroes when they become the first men to be rocketed to Mars. Actually the space travelers are as phony as their mission controller, Dr. James Kelloway (Hal Holbrook); to avert a failure that might cost the space program its funding, the Mars-bound vessel has been sent up without a crew, while the helmeted astronauts sit on a movie soundstage, pretending to be in outer space for the benefit of the TV cameras. Unfortunately the Mars ship crashes on arrival, making the astronaut trio thoroughly expendable. Investigative reporter Robert Caulfield (Elliott Gould), who's smelled a rat all along, races against time to prevent NASA from "terminating" the hapless astronauts in order to cover up the conspiracy.

One can heal through creativity and transcend disputes and anger, journey to new places of peace and wonder that still hold strong emotion and sadness but are driven by the vital energy of the unexpected in creativity and personal expression.
"A Little Wonder" was commissioned for Six Scents Parfums, an interdisciplinary collaboration between contemporary artists and fashion designers. Six Scents Series Three is an exploration into the nature of childhood memories and the influence of adolescence on identity. Created by a distinct group of designers, artists and perfumers, these limited edition fragrances are designed to represent a global range of contemporary views on creativity and culture. Each of the films for Series Three portray the unavoidable transition from innocence to experience. "A Little Wonder", by Rainer Judd, is beautiful short film explores imagination and creativity as a passageway out of an environment of conflict.
A portion of the proceeds from Six Scents Series Three will be donated to War Child International (www.warchild.ca). War Child works with children all over the world to reduce poverty, to provide education and to defend their rights. They work tirelessly to help children whose lives have been torn apart by conflict, providing them with the means to build a brighter future.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Rainer Judd is an actor, filmmaker and artist. Currently she is in development with her feature film project, All I Remember. Both the feature project and her short film Remember Back, Remember When (2008) are autobiographical. She recently completed the short film, A Little Wonder, as part of the Six Scents Series Three perfume project. Rainer has directed short films and worked in production with directors such as Francis Coppola, Neil Burger, Terry Gilliam, and Gus Van Sant. As an actor she has worked with directors such as Janusz Kaminski, Michael Rhymer, Peter Chelsom, Peter Hyams, Robert Downey Sr. A graduate of NYU Film, her thesis short film Plague Circuit won the Texas Award at the USA Film Festival. In 2007 she was a recipient of Art Production Fund’s Artist Residency Grant at the Fondation Claude Monet in Giverny, France. Rainer’s drawings and photos have been in group exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, and Austin.
Rainer has served as Board President of JUDD Foundation since 2003. Founded by her father, the late artist Donald Judd, JUDD Foundation promotes understanding of and access to his work. She also serves on the Board of Blue Ocean Institute, founded by marine biologist Dr. Carl Safina to inspire a closer relationship with the sea through science, art, and literature.

Epoque indéterminée. Qu’écoute-t-on dans un bar perdu sur une des colonies lunaires de Jupiter? Une musique un peu informe à base boîte à rythme, quelques lignes de basse synthétique et des choeurs vaporeux passés dans un vocoder. Une musique au débit kilométrique, puisque quand le personnage principal remet les pieds dans le même bar un peu plus tard dans le film, c’est (à peu près) la même chose qui passe.
Vagues répétitives, instruments du futur, musiciens mutants et extra-terrestres, musique de demain.

Huitième épisode de CGM, l'émission consacrée aux origines de l'image de synthèse au cinéma, qui détaille les premiers effets spéciaux calculés par ordinateur pour le grand écran.
Après TRON et les films inspirés par le jeu vidéo, on continue avec la création de la compagnie phare Digital Productions et son travail sur The Last Starfighter et 2010 : The Year We Make Contact, tous deux sortis en 1984.
Tout un programme donc, sachant que j'ai pu notamment discuter avec deux des personnes ayant travaillé sur ces films : Larry Yaeger, alors développeur software sur The Last Starfighter et co-auteur de la simulation de Jupiter dans 2010, ainsi que Jeffrey Okun, qui avait la lourde tâche de coordinateur des effets visuels sur The Last Starfighter.
Pour l'épisode 9, nous nous éloignerons pendant un temps du cinéma hollywoodien pour nous concentrer sur l'animation japonaise, avec un focus sur les deux premiers long-métrages d'animation nippons à avoir utilisé de l'image de synthèse : Golgo 13 (1983) et Lensman (1984).
