A messenger disrupted Suleiman in his reverie. He brought news from Malta...
Suleiman had outlived both his friends and his rivals. Charles V had passed, but his throne had passed to a son who proved just as vexing. An ardent Catholic, Philip II set his ships to harass Ottoman fleets in the Mediterranean and emboldened others to dispute Suleiman's mastery of the sea. The Knights of Malta, whom Suleiman had defeated at Rhodes and allowed to leave peacefully, once again gave safe habor to these Christian ships. Suleiman sent a force to take their island, but his commanders argued with each other and Christian Europe united against him in a way that it could not when he'd been a younger man. The Knights Hospitallier withdrew into their forts. His army struggled for three weeks to take just one of them, and although they succeeded, Suleiman's commander died and the Christian reinforcements had time to join the remaining two forts. At last, faced with yet another fleet of reinforcements, Suleiman's commanders decided to withdraw.
Back in his garden, Suleiman knew that this defeat would destroy the invincible image of his empire. He resolved to prove that the Turks were still a force to be feared, and organized a campaign to take Vienna. He would lead them himself. They left in 1566 with great fanfare, but they were immediately greeted by torrential rains that slowed their advance and cost them materiel. Suleiman spent the whole trip confined to a carriage, and when they finally arrived to siege Szeged, he had to retreat a sickbed in his tent. He died while the battle still raged outside, never to know his empire's fate.

Unlike what is expected during hot afternoons, the grounds of the Mecca Grand Mosque dampen the feet of worshipers who circumambulate around the Kaaba even when the temperature is at its highest in the middle of a sizzling summer day.
"All the tiles in prayer spaces are directed towards the prayer direction of qibla. Each tile can accommodate an entire line of worshipers. One tile is 120 centimeters long and 60 centimeters wide. Tiles are separated by lines in order to help in the organization of prayer lines," said Abdul Mohsin bin Hamid- Head of studies and projects at the Prophet's mosque.
The tiles of the Medina Mosque also offer a cool comforting sensation for the feet of worshipers unlike how hot it might appear to be.
Tiles used in the Mecca and Medina mosques come from Greece in the form of blocs that are locally carved and manufactured.
"The floor of the Medina Mosque is covered with tiles of premium quality. The granite that covers the space around the mosque is also of premium quality. In addition, the roof of the mosque and the area surrounding its gates are covered with a type of marble called Thasos and which is by nature cool and is not affected by the heat of the sun in any of the seasons and no matter how high the temperature could be. It always remains cool," said Abdul Wahid al Hattab- Director of public relations and media in the general administration of the Prophet's mosque.
The attention given to the type and quality of the marble on which worshipers walk demonstrates the amount of care given to the two mosques in general.

Suleiman the Magnificent
Suleiman I (Ottoman Turkish: سلطان سليمان اول; Turkish: I. Süleyman, almost always Kanunî Sultan Süleyman; 6 February 1494 – 7 September 1566), commonly known as Suleiman the Magnificent in the West and "Kanuni" (the Lawgiver) in the East, was the tenth and longest-reigning Great Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, from 1520 to his death in 1566. Under his administration, the Ottoman State ruled over 20 to 30 million people.
Suleiman became a prominent monarch of 16th-century Europe, presiding over the apex of the Ottoman Empire's military, political and economic power. Suleiman personally led Ottoman armies in conquering the Christian strongholds of Belgrade and Rhodes as well as most of Hungary before his conquests were checked at the Siege of Vienna in 1529. He annexed much of the Middle East in his conflict with the Persian Safavids and large areas of North Africa as far west as Algeria. Under his rule, the Ottoman fleet dominated the seas from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and through the Persian Gulf.

Unlike what is expected during hot afternoons, the grounds of the Mecca Grand Mosque dampen the feet of worshipers who circumambulate around the Kaaba even when the temperature is at its highest in the middle of a sizzling summer day. "All the tiles in prayer spaces are directed towards the prayer direction of qibla. Each tile can accommodate an entire line of worshipers. One tile is 120 centimeters long and 60 centimeters wide. Tiles are separated by lines in order to help in the organization of prayer lines," said Abdul Mohsin bin Hamid- Head of studies and projects at the Prophet's mosque. The tiles of the Medina Mosque also offer a cool comforting sensation for the feet of worshipers unlike how hot it might appear to be. Tiles used in the Mecca and Medina mosques come from Greece in the form of blocs that are locally carved and manufactured. "The floor of the Medina Mosque is covered with tiles of premium quality. The granite that covers the space around the mosque is also of premium quality. In addition, the roof of the mosque and the area surrounding its gates are covered with a type of marble called Thasos and which is by nature cool and is not affected by the heat of the sun in any of the seasons and no matter how high the temperature could be. It always remains cool," said Abdul Wahid al Hattab- Director of public relations and media in the general administration of the Prophet's mosque. A messenger disrupted Suleiman in his reverie. He brought news from Malta...
Suleiman had outlived both his friends and his rivals. Charles V had passed, but his throne had passed to a son who proved just as vexing. An ardent Catholic, Philip II set his ships to harass Ottoman fleets in the Mediterranean and emboldened others to dispute Suleiman's mastery of the sea. The Knights of Malta, whom Suleiman had defeated at Rhodes and allowed to leave peacefully, once again gave safe habor to these Christian ships. Suleiman sent a force to take their island, but his commanders argued with each other and Christian Europe united against him in a way that it could not when he'd been a younger man. The Knights Hospitallier withdrew into their forts. His army struggled for three weeks to take just one of them, and although they succeeded, Suleiman's commander died and the Christian reinforcements had time to join the remaining two forts. At last, faced with yet another fleet of reinforcements, Suleiman's commanders decided to withdraw.
Back in his garden, Suleiman knew that this defeat would destroy the invincible image of his empire. He resolved to prove that the Turks were still a force to be feared, and organized a campaign to take Vienna. He would lead them himself. They left in 1566 with great fanfare, but they were immediately greeted by torrential rains that slowed their advance and cost them materiel. Suleiman spent the whole trip confined to a carriage, and when they finally arrived to siege Szeged, he had to retreat a sickbed in his tent. He died while the battle still raged outside, never to know his empire's fate.

Unlike what is expected during hot afternoons, the grounds of the Mecca Grand Mosque dampen the feet of worshipers who circumambulate around the Kaaba even when the temperature is at its highest in the middle of a sizzling summer day.
"All the tiles in prayer spaces are directed towards the prayer direction of qibla. Each tile can accommodate an entire line of worshipers. One tile is 120 centimeters long and 60 centimeters wide. Tiles are separated by lines in order to help in the organization of prayer lines," said Abdul Mohsin bin Hamid- Head of studies and projects at the Prophet's mosque.
The tiles of the Medina Mosque also offer a cool comforting sensation for the feet of worshipers unlike how hot it might appear to be.
Tiles used in the Mecca and Medina mosques come from Greece in the form of blocs that are locally carved and manufactured.
"The floor of the Medina Mosque is covered with tiles of premium quality. The granite that covers the space around the mosque is also of premium quality. In addition, the roof of the mosque and the area surrounding its gates are covered with a type of marble called Thasos and which is by nature cool and is not affected by the heat of the sun in any of the seasons and no matter how high the temperature could be. It always remains cool," said Abdul Wahid al Hattab- Director of public relations and media in the general administration of the Prophet's mosque.
The attention given to the type and quality of the marble on which worshipers walk demonstrates the amount of care given to the two mosques in general.

The Independent has previously revealed how the multibillion-pound expansion of the Grand Mosque has, according to the Washington-based Gulf Institute, led to the destruction of up to 95 per cent of Mecca’s millennium-old buildings. They have been replaced with luxury hotels, apartments and shopping malls.
King Abdullah has appointed the prominent Wahhabi cleric and imam of the Grand Mosque, Abdul Rahman al-Sudais, to oversee the expansion project – necessary to cope with the huge number of pilgrims who now visit each year.
On Monday, Britain’s The Independent newspaper reported that the tomb of the Prophet Mohammed in the holy city could be “destroyed” and the prophet’s remains removed to an anonymous grave.
The daily said the controversial proposals were part of a consultation document by a leading Saudi academic that had been circulated among the supervisors of the Prophet’s Mosque.
The General Presidency of the Two Holy mosques said the view of the academic did not reflect any “direction by the government, which is keen on serving the Two Holy mosques.”
Ahmad Mohammad al-Mansouri, the spokesman of the General Presidency of the Two Holy mosques, reiterated the organization’s view, saying the academic’s proposal was his alone.
The Independent has been accused by Mowafaq al-Nowaysar – deputy editor in chief of Saudi Arabia’s “Makkah” Newspaper – of “theft” and “mistranslating” an Arabic article that appeared in the Saudi daily on Aug. 25 on the subject.
In response to the allegations of “theft,” Deputy Managing Editor at The Independent, Will Gore, told Al Arabiya News on Wednesday they were “not aware of Makkah’s report” a week earlier.
The Independent had claimed the story as an exclusive, and many British news sites carrying the news have credited the paper as breaking the story.
The Independent’s story did not include any confirmation or comment from any Saudi officials. For its part, Al Arabiya has obtained a comment from government sources who confirmed that the issue is nothing more than a “proposal by an academic which was published in a specialized magazine and is not a government decision.”
