Nobel Peace Prize

Oscar Arias, President of Costa Rica and leader of the Costa Rican social-democratic party PLN, received the Nobel Peace Prize on 13 October 1987 for his role in the realization of the Esquipulas Peace Agreement (1987). In Central America, a region torn by conflict, dictatorship, guerrillas and insurgencies, the Esquipulas Agreement proposed measures to end hostilities and to promote  economic cooperation and free elections. Esquipulas was signed in Guatemala City by the presidents of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. It was later used as a basis for other peace agreements in the region.
