The Boy Who Started the Syrian War
We tell the story of Mouawiya Syasneh, the boy whose anti-Assad graffiti lit the spark that engulfed Syria.
Mouawiya Syasneh was just 14 when he sprayed anti-government slogans on his school wall in Deraa, Syria. It was February 2011, and he could never have imagined that such a minor act would spark a full-blown civil war.
More than half a million people have been killed in Syria since the start of the war. Mouawiya's home city has been ravaged by street fighting, shelling and barrel bombing. The war has left scars that may never heal.
Now a young man, fighting on the frontline for the Free Syrian Army, Mouawiya admits that had he known what the consequences of his actions would be, he would never have taunted the country's president, Bashar al-Assad.
His life has been transformed by that adolescent prank. He has lost friends and relatives, including his father. And Syria has been changed forever.
The Boy Who Started the Syrian Civil War offers a glimpse into life in Deraa since the start of the conflict.
We meet Syrians trying to lead normal lives amid the chaos as well as those who have taken up arms against Assad's forces.

It gives a startling indication of ISIS's control of Syria's Northern Front. It's too dangerous for the cameraman to film, so a local man films it secretly. Muhammad Ali - a Syrian and one of only a few reporters to make it safely into this region in recent months - gives us a gripping insight into the battle raging between the FSA and ISIS from inside the country. "If a group wants to use weapons against us, fight us, and their goal is to steal the Syrian revolution, we will not hesitate to fight back", Jamal Marouf, an FSA leader says as he explains why they are now fighting ISIS as keenly as the government forces. We see the FSA engage ISIS in direct combat, forcing them to abandon one of their bases and reclaim the town of al-Atareb. The local response gives an indication of how ISIS are feared here: "Since we were freed we live in safety. ISIS hobbies include sabotage, kidnap and murder in cold blood", one townsman tells us. A fascinating insight into Syria's fractured "war within a war".

Great Syrian Revolt
The Great Syrian Revolt (Arabic: الثورة السورية الكبرى) or Great Druze Revolt (1925–1927) was a general uprising across Mandatory Syria and Lebanon aimed at getting rid of the French, who had been in control of the region since the end of World War I. The uprising was not centrally coordinated; rather, it was attempted by multiple factions – among them Sunni, Druze, Alawite, Christian, and Shia – with the common goal of ending French rule. The revolt was ultimately put down by French forces.
Background
In 1918, towards the end of World War I, the Ottoman Empire's forces withdrew from Syria after being defeated by the Allied Powers (Great Britain and France) and their Hashemite Arab allies from the Hejaz. The British had promised the Hashemites control over a united Arab state consisting of the bulk of Arabic-speaking lands from which the Ottomans withdrew, even as the Allies made other plans for the region in the 1916 Sykes–Picot Agreement.
The idea of Syrian and Arab independence were not entirely new concepts. French forces entering Syria faced resistance from local actors in the north in 1919, with the prominent Alawite sheikh Saleh al-Ali launching a revolt in the coastal mountain range and Ibrahim Hananu leading a revolt in Aleppo and the surrounding countryside. The leaders of both uprisings were vocally supportive of the creation of a united Syrian state presided over by Emir Faisal, the son of Sharif Husayn. In March 1920 the Hashemites officially established the Kingdom of Syria with Faisal as king and the capital in Damascus.

1966 Syrian coup d'état
The 1966 Syrian coup d'état refers to events between 21 and 23 February in which the government of the Syrian Arab Republic was overthrown and replaced. The ruling National Command of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party were removed from power by a union of the party's Military Committee and the Regional Command, under the leadership of Salah Jadid.
The coup was precipitated by a heightening in the power struggle between the party's old guard, represented by Michel Aflaq, Salah al-Din al-Bitar, and Munif al-Razzaz, and the younger factions adhering to a Neo-Ba'athist position. On 21 February, supporters of the old guard in the army ordered the transfer of their rivals. Two days later, the Military Committee, backing the younger factions, launched a coup that involved violent fighting in Aleppo, Damascus, Deir ez-Zor, and Latakia. As a result of the coup, the party's historical founders fled the country and spent the rest of their lives in exile.
Jadid's government was the most radical administration in Syria's history. The coup created a permanent schism between the Syrian and Iraqi regional branches of the Ba'ath Party and their respective National Commands, with many senior Syrian Ba'athists defecting to Iraq. As a legacy of the coup, during Jadid's rule, Syria initiated a propaganda campaign against the Iraqi Ba'athists. Jadid's government would be overthrown in the Corrective Movement of 1970, which brought Hafez al-Assad to power.

Syrian Civil War
The Syrian Civil War (Arabic: الحرب الأهلية السورية) is an ongoing multi-sided armed conflict with international interventions taking place in Syria. The unrest began in the early spring of 2011 within the context of the Arab Spring protests, with nationwide protests against President Bashar al-Assad's government, whose forces responded with violent crackdowns. The conflict gradually morphed from mass protests to an armed rebellion after months of military sieges. A United Nations report released in December, 2012, stated that the conflict had "become overtly sectarian in nature", between Alawite–dominated government forces, militias and other Shia groups fighting primarily against Sunni-dominated rebel groups; however both opposition and government forces denied that.
Initially, the Syrian government relied mainly on its armed forces, but since 2014 local protection units made up of volunteers known as National Defence Force have come to play a larger role, gradually becoming the primary military force of the Syrian state. From the early stages, the Syrian government received technical, financial, military and political support from Russia, Iran and Iraq. In 2013, Iran-backed Hezbollah entered the war in support of the Syrian Army. Due to foreign involvement, the conflict had been called a proxy war between the regional Sunni and Shia powers, most prominently as a proxy conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran. In September 2015, Russia, Iraq, Iran and Syria set up a joint operation room (information centre) in Baghdad to coordinate their activity in Syria. On 30 September 2015, Russia started its own air campaign on the side and at the request of the government of Syria. The resultant proxy war between the United States and Russia led some commentators to characterise the situation as a "a proto-world war with nearly a dozen countries embroiled in two overlapping conflicts".

"I pay homage to ISIS. To listen and obey. God is a witness to what we are saying. Praise God!" The ISIS leader shouts and the crowded town square answers. It gives a startling indication of ISIS's control of Syria's Northern Front. It's too dangerous for the cameraman to film, so a local man films it secretly. Muhammad Ali - a Syrian and one of only a few reporters to make it safely into this region in recent months - gives us a gripping insight into the battle raging between the FSA and ISIS from inside the country. "If a group wants to use weapons against us, fight us, and their goal is to steal the Syrian revolution, we will not hesitate to fight back", Jamal Marouf, an FSA leader says as he explains why they are now fighting ISIS as keenly as the government forces. We see the FSA engage ISIS in direct combat, forcing them to abandon one of their bases and reclaim the town of al-Atareb. The local response gives an indication of how ISIS are feared here: "Since we were freed we live in safety. ISIS hobbies include sabotage, kidnap and murder in cold blood", one townsman tells us. A fascinating insight into Syria's fractured "war within a war".

The Syrian War of Independence - Every Day/Week (1918-27)
With the help of the Hashemite Kingdom of Hejaz, the British Empire would be able to push the Ottoman Empire out of the Levant and would transfer Lebanon and Syria to France, much to the dismay of the Syrian people, protests broke out in October 1918 against the Ottoman Empire and established a Interim Government in Damascus, declaring Faisal I as King in March 1920, France would move in and crush the Kingdom but face large-scale resistance by various leaders and militias, some with the backing and inspiration of Mustafa Ataturk, others with the determination and call for independence of their nation, this is how the Syrian War of Independence played out. With the help of the Hashemite Kingdom of Hejaz, the British Empire would be able to push the Ottoman Empire out of the Levant and would transfer Lebanon and Syria to France, much to the dismay of the Syrian people, protests broke out in October 1918 against the Ottoman Empire and established a Interim Government in Damascus, declaring Faisal I as King in March 1920, France would move in and crush the Kingdom but face large-scale resistance by various leaders and militias, some with the backing and inspiration of Mustafa Ataturk, others with the determination and call for independence of their nation, this is how the Syrian War of Independence played out.

The Boy Who Started the Syrian War
We tell the story of Mouawiya Syasneh, the boy whose anti-Assad graffiti lit the spark that engulfed Syria.
Mouawiya Syasneh was just 14 when he sprayed anti-government slogans on his school wall in Deraa, Syria. It was February 2011, and he could never have imagined that such a minor act would spark a full-blown civil war.
More than half a million people have been killed in Syria since the start of the war. Mouawiya's home city has been ravaged by street fighting, shelling and barrel bombing. The war has left scars that may never heal.

"I pay homage to ISIS. To listen and obey. God is a witness to what we are saying. Praise God!" The ISIS leader shouts and the crowded town square answers. It gives a startling indication of ISIS's control of Syria's Northern Front. It's too dangerous for the cameraman to film, so a local man films it secretly. Muhammad Ali - a Syrian and one of only a few reporters to make it safely into this region in recent months - gives us a gripping insight into the battle raging between the FSA and ISIS from inside the country. "If a group wants to use weapons against us, fight us, and their goal is to steal the Syrian revolution, we will not hesitate to fight back", Jamal Marouf, an FSA leader says as he explains why they are now fighting ISIS as keenly as the government forces. We see the FSA engage ISIS in direct combat, forcing them to abandon one of their bases and reclaim the town of al-Atareb. The local response gives an indication of how ISIS are feared here: "Since we were freed we live in safety. ISIS hobbies include sabotage, kidnap and murder in cold blood", one townsman tells us. A fascinating insight into Syria's fractured "war within a war".

The French and British colonial powers had their own plans on how to rule the Middle East after the costly campaigns of World War 1. National self determination for the different groups in Syria, Iraq, Palestine and Arabia were not part of these plans. And so in the summer of 1920 the situation in Iraq and Syria escalated and the French-Syrian War and the Iraqi Revolt broke out.

In this documentary we explore one of the unsung wars of Roman history which gets lost in the shadows of more famed conflicts like the Punic Wars, the Gallic Wars, the Civil Wars, the Parthian Wars, and more. Yet the Great Illyrian Uprising should not be forgotten as it was an extremely consequential event of the era. The war featured nearly 1 million rebels, saw the deployment of more legions than anytime since the civil wars, threatened Rome itself, and ultimately sowed the seeds for the disastrous Ambush of the Teutoburg Forest at the hands of the traitor Arminius.
Stay tuned for more full documentaries on Roman wars and other fascinating topics revolving around the Battle of Teutoburg. As you can imagine, I've been heavily inspired by the Netflix show Barbarians and can't wait to cover more of the history they merely touched on. Enjoy and see you in the next one.

With the help of the Hashemite Kingdom of Hejaz, the British Empire would be able to push the Ottoman Empire out of the Levant and would transfer Lebanon and Syria to France, much to the dismay of the Syrian people, protests broke out in October 1918 against the Ottoman Empire and established a Interim Government in Damascus, declaring Faisal I as King in March 1920, France would move in and crush the Kingdom but face large-scale resistance by various leaders and militias, some with the backing and inspiration of Mustafa Ataturk, others with the determination and call for independence of their nation, this is how the Syrian War of Independence played out.
