The Philippines (i/ˈfɪlᵻpiːnz/; Filipino: Pilipinas [ˌpɪlɪˈpinɐs]), officially known as the Republic of the Philippines (Filipino: Republika ng Pilipinas), is a sovereign island country in Southeast Asia situated in the western Pacific Ocean. It consists of about 7,500 islands that are categorized broadly under three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The capital city of the Philippines is Manila and the most populous city is Quezon City; both are part of Metro Manila.
To the north of the Philippines across the Luzon Strait lies Taiwan; Vietnam sits west across the South China Sea; southwest lies Malaysia in the island of Borneo across the Sulu Sea, and to the south the Celebes Sea separates it from other islands of Indonesia; while to the east it is bounded by the Philippine Sea and the island-nation of Palau. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and close to the equator makes the Philippines prone to earthquakes and typhoons, but also endows it with abundant natural resources and some of the world's greatest biodiversity. At approximately 300,000 square kilometers (115,831 sq mi), the Philippines is the 72nd-largest country in the world.
China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a one-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces; five autonomous regions; four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing); two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau); and claims sovereignty over Taiwan.
Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area, and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement. China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.

MANILA, Philippines - British author Martin Jacques is mistaken if he believes that Philippine relations with China is all about the South China Sea.
An animated infographic depicting China’s territorial disputes. Is China trying to expand its territory? Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.trib.al/rWl91R7 ONE reason China’s spectacular rise sometimes alarms its neighbours is that it is not a status quo power. From its inland, western borders to its eastern and southern seaboard, it claims territory it does not control. In the west, China’s border dispute with India is more than a minor cartographic tiff. China claims an area of India that is three times the size of Switzerland, the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Further west, China occupies Indian claimed territory next to Ladakh in Kashmir, an area called the Aksai Chin. China humiliated India in a brief, bloody war over the dispute in 1962. Since 1988, ...
After China has been declared as loser in the case against Philippines over West Philippine Sea still China won't give-up the said Island. And instead of giving up the island, they even ask for war to Philippines if ever Filipino's still insist on having the island. Many countries had sided with Philippines and one of them now is Russia who was known to side with China the last time. Russia and India promise to help Philippines against China no matter what happens. #Duterte2016
As it seeks to be less dependent on the United States, the Philippine government is prepared to forge “warmer” relations with China without necessarily setting any preconditions to their planned talks. Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella made the remarks after Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin hailed the Philippine-China relations are at a new turning point. Taiwan said two Chinese Yun-8 aircraft breached its airspace four times on Monday while heading towards the South China Sea and the Philippines. According to the BBC, the Chinese military aircrafts entered Taiwanese airspace twice in the morning, at 8:31 and at 10:56 AM, and twice in the afternoon, at 2:41 and 4:57 PM. Taiwanese fighters jets were deployed to intercept the aircrafts, issuing warnings through radio communication until they left the airspace, the Liberty Times reported. China’s defense ministry has yet to comment on the incident, according to the International Business Times. The accident comes a week after the United States accused a Chinese fighter jet of coming too close to a US patrol aircraft in international waters. According to the Guardian, China said the pilot ...

It's best when you arrive here to have some kind of a destination. Don't come here with no idea about where you're going to stay. If you wander around, looking for somewhere to stay, you'll make yourself a target. Before you come, pick a hotel or somewhere to stay before you arrive. This will enhance your safety. Once you have that, then you can get yourself organised and you'll have a safe spot to base yourself from. When you come to the Philippines, you don't need to bring much. What you want to bring is stuff that's waterproof. It's rains here, you'll be riding in boats, on the back of motorcycles, you'll be on the beac...

In response to netizens' questions and concerns, CCTVNEWS invited Liao Shiping, a professor at the Law School of Beijing Normal University, to discuss the South China Sea dispute and the tribunal. Since China published a “position paper” in response to the Philippines unilaterally taking the case to the PCA at The Hague, some observers such as the UK’s Royal Institute of International Affairs website have questioned if, and why, China is trying to influence the result by “pleading” to the tribunal while not participating in the arbitration. No country feels China's rise more deeply than Japan. Through intricate case studies of visits by politicians to the Yasukuni Shrine, conflicts at the East China Sea boundary, concerns about food safety, and strategies of island defense, Sheila Smith explores the policy issues testing the Japanese government as it navigates its relationship with China. She finds that Japan's interactions with China extend far beyond negotiations between diplomats to include an array of social actors intent on influencing the Sino-Japanese relationship. At a National Committee event on May 11, 2015 in New York City, Sheila Smith discussed her book Intimate Rivals and the implications of the Sino-Japanese relationship on U.S.-China relations.
