Manchester (/ˈmæntʃɪstər/) is a city and metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, England, with a population of 514,417 as of 2013. It lies within the United Kingdom's second-most populous urban area, with a population of 2.55 million. Manchester is fringed by the Cheshire Plain to the south, the Pennines to the north and east and an arc of towns with which it forms a continuous conurbation. The local authority is Manchester City Council.
The recorded history of Manchester began with the civilian settlement associated with the Roman fort of Mamucium or Mancunium, which was established in about 79 AD on a sandstone bluff near the confluence of the rivers Medlock and Irwell. It was historically a part of Lancashire, although areas of Cheshire south of the River Mersey were incorporated during the 20th century. Throughout the Middle Ages Manchester remained a manorial township but began to expand "at an astonishing rate" around the turn of the 19th century. Manchester's unplanned urbanisation was brought on by a boom in textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution, and resulted in it becoming the world's first industrialised city.
An art museum or art gallery is a building or space for the exhibition of art, usually visual art. Museums can be public or private, but what distinguishes a museum is the ownership of a collection. Paintings are the most commonly displayed art objects; however, sculpture, decorative arts, furniture, textiles, costume, drawings, pastels, watercolors, collages, prints, artists' books, photographs, and installation art are also regularly shown. Although primarily concerned with providing a space to show works of visual art, art galleries are sometimes used to host other artistic activities, such as performance art, music concerts, or poetry readings.
The term is used for both public galleries, which are non-profit or publicly owned museums that display selected collections of art. On the other hand, private galleries refers to the commercial enterprises for the sale of art. However, both types of gallery may host traveling exhibits or temporary exhibitions including art borrowed from elsewhere.
Manchester Art Gallery, formerly Manchester City Art Gallery, is a publicly owned art museum on Mosley Street in Manchester city centre. The main gallery premises were built for a learned society in 1823 and today its collection occupies three connected buildings, two of which were designed by Sir Charles Barry. Both Barry's buildings are listed. The building that links them was designed by Hopkins Architects following an architectural design competition managed by RIBA Competitions. It opened in 2002 following a major renovation and expansion project undertaken by the art gallery.
Manchester Art Gallery is free to enter and open seven days a week. It houses many works of local and international significance and has a collection of more than 25,000 objects. More than half a million people visited the museum in the period of a year, according to figures released in April 2014.
The Royal Manchester Institution was a scholarly society formed in 1823. It was housed what is now the art gallery's main gallery building on Mosley Street. The first object acquired for its collection, James Northcote's A Moor (a portrait of the celebrated black actor Ira Aldridge), was bought in 1827.

Manchester is a city of firsts. It was the epicenter of the Industrial Revolution, the place where mankind first split the atom, and the birthplace of the modern computer. The many chapters of Manchester’s story come together in Castlefield. Here you’ll find the remains of a Roman fort, Bridgewater Canal, and some of the mills which once generated incredible wealth for the city. In the background, Beetham Tower is a symbol of a city again on the rise. Manchester’s crowning glory is its Town Hall, built to rival the great buildings of London. During the Industrial Revolution, Manchester’s merchants went on a spending spree, scouring the world in search of cultural treasures to fill their stately homes. Many of these treasures now reside in the Manchester Art Gallery and the Manchester M...

On 1st October 2010, Marconi Union performed a 150 minute set of improvised soundscapes within Manchester's City Art Gallery. This was done as an accompniament for people attending the 'Recorders' exhibition by Mexican-Canadian electronic artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. The Marconi union trio's participation in the evening involved the three playing a very organic ambient set in a large glass atrium which people passed through on the way to the exhibition, the idea being that some people may have chosen to stop and listen for a while others would simply pass by. Marconi Union are a British musical trio consisting of Richard Talbot, Jamie Crossley and Duncan Meadows

I used to come home each night to no one - no one
All by myself, turn out the light - no one - no one
One knife, a fork 'n' a spoon
An empty bed in a cold room
Oooh I needed someone - maybe you could help
I called you up, I said There's no one, baby there's no one else
No one ever looked twice at me - no one - no one
Take a look at my life - what do you see - no one - no one
Kinda nervous 'n' jealous too - I lose me if I lose you
Just when I was feeling sorry for myself
She called me back, she said, There's no one, baby there's no one else
With no one to call you - with no one rootin' for you
With no one to adore you - you'd be lost and alone
With no one to kiss you - with no one to miss you
And always be with you - you would turn into stone
I've been waiting for the longest time
To hold your hand on Sunday
Oooh I needed someone - I saw you and I fell
I called you up, I said, There's no one - and I'll never want anyone else
Baby there's no one else
Baby there's no one else
Baby there's no one else
Baby there's no one else
