This piece is insane! It involves difficult, fast runs in the right hand with some tight fingering here and there (0:12, 0:42, 0:56). But the main difficulty is the left hand, with huge leaps and bounds, and at 0:27, the pianist must play very rapid octaves and large chords that are very far apart. Also that final run at 1:05 is a nightmare!

Frederic Chopin's popular prelude in A Flat Major, Op. 28 No. 17. This prelude has such charming melody lines. Many of them are like "bubbles" (rise --- fall) within just one or two measures. I hope my interpretation can do it at least a little justice:)

Noah Johnson plays Chopin's Barcarolle opus 60. So many things to say about this piece! It is one of my favorites. A barcarolle is a song that was sung by venetian gondoliers. This might not be a song, but as a musical composition a barcarolle always has a flowing, afloat feel and is almost always composed in 6 8 time.
I hope this performance can somewhat do the piece justice. Also, I suggest you start at the beginning and watch it all the way to the end. If you don't have time now, stop listening and do it later. If you don't want to listen to the whole thing, I suggest that you click one of these videos to the right. This piece must be taken in as a whole, not in little fragments.
Lots of difficulties in this one. In technical terms only; double trills, rapid octave jumps and runs, furiously fast chords, a quick, light candenza, etc...
Musically, very delicate touch is required. Phrasing is essential, and everything must keep moving in the same direction. Melodic voicing is tough in this piece....
I turned my piano around and re-adjusted the recording set-up. Hope it sounds better. Also, enjoy these nice pictures I added.

How hard is this piece?
Very difficult. Actually, deceptively difficult. The black keys etude is flashy and thin - lots of people say, "wow, how do you do it?" but this piece is in another world. Technically, this is much harder, but musically it blows 10/5 out of the water. ABRSM gives it 7.5 out of 9, but I think it should be an 8. And I've played the whole scale (another pun) of them so I know.

Johnson
Johnson is a surname of English origin. The name itself is a patronym of the given name John, literally meaning "son of John". The name John derives from Latin Johannes, which is derived through Greek Ἰωάννης Iōannēs from Hebrew יוחנן Yohanan, meaning "Yahweh has favoured". The name has been extremely popular in Europe since the Christian era as a result of it being given to St John the Baptist, St John the Evangelist and nearly one thousand other Christian saints. Soli Deo gloria
Soli Deo gloria is a Latin term for Glory to God alone. It has been used by artists like Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel and Christoph Graupner to signify that the work was produced for the sake of praising God. The phrase has become one of the five solas propounded to summarise the Reformers' basic beliefs during the Protestant Reformation.
As a doctrine, it means that everything that is done is for God's glory to the exclusion of mankind's self-glorification and pride. Christians are to be motivated and inspired by God's glory and not their own.
Meaning and related terms
The three words Soli Deo gloria (abbreviated S. D. G.) have meaning in Latin as follows: soli is the (irregular) dative singular of the adjective "lone", "sole", and agrees with the dative singular Deo, (in the nominative dictionary form Deus), meaning "to God"; and gloria is the nominative case of "glory","gloria".
Soli Deo gloria is usually translated glory to God alone, but some translate it glory to the only God. A similar phrase is found in the Vulgate translation of the Bible: "soli Deo honor et gloria". This is grammatically the same as the signature of Bach and Handel, but using the dative "to the only God" then two nominative subjects "honour and glory." The verse reads differently in Greek and English because of the additional adjective "wise" aphthartoi, aoratoi, monoi, sophoi Theoi "to the immortal, invisible, unique, wise, God."

This piece is insane! It involves difficult, fast runs in the right hand with some tight fingering here and there (0:12, 0:42, 0:56). But the main difficulty is the left hand, with huge leaps and bounds, and at 0:27, the pianist must play very rapid octaves and large chords that are very far apart. Also that final run at 1:05 is a nightmare! Frederic Chopin's popular prelude in A Flat Major, Op. 28 No. 17. This prelude has such charming melody lines. Many of them are like "bubbles" (rise --- fall) within just one or two measures. Chopin - Barcarolle Op.60 in F Sharp Major | Noah Johnson, Piano
Noah Johnson plays Chopin's Barcarolle opus 60. So many things to say about this piece! It is one of my favorites. A barcarolle is a song that was sung by venetian gondoliers. This might not be a song, but as a musical composition a barcarolle always has a flowing, afloat feel and is almost always composed in 6 8 time. I hope this performance can somewhat do the piece justice. Also, I suggest you start at the beginning and watch it all the way to the end. If you don't have time now, stop listening and do it later. If you don't want to listen to the whole thing, I suggest that you click one of these videos to the right. This piece must be taken in as a whole, not in little fragments. Lots of difficulties in this one. In technical terms only; double trills, rapid octave jumps and runs, furiously fast chords, a quick, light candenza, etc...
Musically, very delicate touch is required. Phrasing is essential, and everything must keep moving in the same direction. Melodic voicing is tough in this piece....
I turned my piano around and re-adjusted the recording set-up. Hope it sounds better. Also, enjoy these nice pictures I added.

Very difficult. Actually, deceptively difficult. The black keys etude is flashy and thin - lots of people say, "wow, how do you do it?" but this piece is in another world. Technically, this is much harder, but musically it blows 10/5 out of the water. ABRSM gives it 7.5 out of 9, but I think it should be an 8. And I've played the whole scale (another pun) of them so I know.

Frederic Chopin's popular prelude in A Flat Major, Op. 28 No. 17. This prelude has such charming melody lines. Many of them are like "bubbles" (rise --- fall) within just one or two measures. Noah Johnson plays Chopin's Barcarolle opus 60. So many things to say about this piece! It is one of my favorites. A barcarolle is a song that was sung by venetian gondoliers. This might not be a song, but as a musical composition a barcarolle always has a flowing, afloat feel and is almost always composed in 6 8 time. I hope this performance can somewhat do the piece justice. Also, I suggest you start at the beginning and watch it all the way to the end. If you don't have time now, stop listening and do it later. If you don't want to listen to the whole thing, I suggest that you click one of these videos to the right. This piece must be taken in as a whole, not in little fragments. This piece is insane! It involves difficult, fast runs in the right hand with some tight fingering here and there (0:12, 0:42, 0:56). But the main difficulty is the left hand, with huge leaps and bounds, and at 0:27, the pianist must play very rapid octaves and large chords that are very far apart. Also that final run at 1:05 is a nightmare!

Musically, very delicate touch is required. Phrasing is essential, and everything must keep moving in the same direction. Melodic voicing is tough in this piece....
I turned my piano around and re-adjusted the recording set-up. Hope it sounds better. Also, enjoy these nice pictures I added.

How hard is this piece?
Very difficult. Actually, deceptively difficult. The black keys etude is flashy and thin - lots of people say, "wow, how do you do it?" but this piece is in another world. Technically, this is much harder, but musically it blows 10/5 out of the water. ABRSM gives it 7.5 out of 9, but I think it should be an 8. And I've played the whole scale (another pun) of them so I know.
