Europe (i/ˈjʊərəp/ or /ˈjɜːrəp/) is a continent that comprises the westernmost part of Eurasia. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. To the east and southeast, Europe is generally considered as separated from Asia by the watershed divides of the Ural and Caucasus Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian and Black Seas, and the waterways of the Turkish Straits. Yet the borders of Europe—a concept dating back to classical antiquity—are arbitrary, as the primarily physiographic term "continent" also incorporates cultural and political elements.
Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe's approximately 50 countries, Russia is by far the largest by both area and population, taking up 40% of the continent (although the country has territory in both Europe and Asia), while Vatican City is the smallest. Europe is the third-most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 739–743 million or about 11% of the world's population. Europe has a climate heavily affected by warm Atlantic currents, tempering winters and enabling warm summers on most of the continent, even on latitudes that have severe climates in North America and Asia. Further from the Atlantic, seasonal differences increase, but the mildness of the climate remains.

Every year tens of thousands of Poles attend a nationalist march in Warsaw. It's an event that has the people of Poland's capital city staying indoors. Since its inception, far-right football fans - or 'ultras' - turn violent against the police, and the march becomes a ferocious battle between hooligans and the state. This year, however, something is different. A right wing government is elected on the eve of the march. How will this affect this traditionally bloody parade? tranzit.ro/Cluj Culture and Politics of Crisis V 21.06 2017 Europe: Economic Crisis and Political Alternatives Mark Blyth & Michael Roberts Where is Europe going and what can be done about its economic malaise? The final instalment of our series of lectures ‘Culture and Politics of Crisis’ focuses on the current European political and economic deadlock. As such, it sets the stage for a dialogue between two of the most important political economists of our time: Mark Blyth and Michael Roberts. For Roberts, the European crisis is diagnosed from a Marxist perspective. For Blyth, the analysis is infused by heterodox Keynesian views. Consequently, the two scholars diverge both in terms of situating the main cause of crisis and the main solution to it: for Roberts the emphasis falls on the ge...
What’s happening to Europe? The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was seen as a triumph for liberal democracy. True, the ‘end of history’ narrative didn’t play out across the world as many predicted. But in Europe political liberalism seemed unshakable, supported as it was by international business and transnational organisations such as the EU and NATO. But now Europe stands at a precarious moment. Anti-establishment and anti-EU political parties are on the rise. Brexit and the presidency of Donald Trump add to the uncertainty. And while Marine Le Pen didn’t sweep to victory in the recent French presidential election, the new president Emmanuel Macron faces an uphill battle to fix the French economy and reform the EU’s institutions. If he fails, Le Pen could be well set to win the presiden...

Ten years ago, Germany was considered as the "sick man of Europe". However, during the last years, the country became the motor of the euro zone. Some praise the efficiency of the "German model", others criticize the merciless rigor of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. In Bavaria, citizens consider financial solidarity with the Greeks as problematic, as well as the financial equalization among the federal states in Germany, for which Bavaria had to pay billions of euros. In Stuttgart, the protests about the controversial rail station project "Stuttgart 21" raises the question about the poeple's participation in political decisions. In Thuringia it comes to the lack of minimum wages and in North Rhine-Westphalia to the so called "Energiewende" decided by Angela Merkel, with all the contrad...
Europe is at a crossroads. Populist far-right movements are challenging the very premise of an integrated European Union. Anti-immigration rhetoric is coalescing with anti-EU politics to challenge the liberal ideals of the European integrationist project. We chart the trajectory of that project from the ashes of World War II, in tandem with the story of the European far-right, exploring the shifts that have led to today’s critical juncture. We trace how far-right ideas have challenged and inflected mainstream politics, setting the political agenda on issues such as the EU and immigration. Combining a compelling narrative, in-depth interviews and informed discussion, The Big Picture sheds historical light and offers incisive analysis on the history and future of Europe. - Subscribe to our ...
