El Salvador (i/ɛl ˈsælvədɔːr/; Spanish: [el salβaˈðor]), officially the Republic of El Salvador (Spanish: República de El Salvador, literally "Republic of The Savior"), is the smallest and the most densely populated country in Central America. El Salvador's capital and largest city is San Salvador. As of 2015, El Salvador had a population of approximately 6.38 million, making it the most densely populated country in the region. Its population consists largely of Mestizos of European and Indigenous American descent.
El Salvador was for centuries inhabited by several Mesoamerican nations, especially the Cuzcatlecs, as well as the Lenca and Maya. In the early 16th century, the Spanish Empire conquered the territory, incorporating it into the Viceroyalty of New Spain. In 1821, the country achieved independence from Spain as part of the First Mexican Empire, only to further secede as part of the Federal Republic of Central America in 1823. Upon the republic's dissolution in 1841, El Salvador became sovereign until forming a short-lived union with Honduras and Nicaragua called the Greater Republic of Central America, which lasted from 1895 to 1898.

El Salvador Travel Video Guide - El Salvador sneaks up on you: in lefty lounge bars in San Salvador, at sobering museums and war memorials, and along lush cloud-forest trails; it's a place of remarkable warmth and intelligence, made all the more appealing for being so unexpected. Travellers tend to skip El Salvador, wooed by marquee destinations such as Guatemala and Costa Rica, and unnerved by stories of civil war and gang violence. But the war ended almost 20 years ago, and crime, while serious, is almost exclusively played out between rival gangs; tourists are virtually never involved. El Salvador Travel Fact: And though El Salvador has fewer protected areas than its neighbors, you get them practically to yourself -- including pristine forests, active volcanoes and sparkling lakes. El Salvador Impresionante / El Salvador Impressive http://elsalvador.travel/impressive/en/ Today we will travel through El Salvador, a little great country that has a lot to show, so let’s not waste time and let's go to our first destination: Suchitoto, which is for me the great secret jewel of the colonial towns. Located next to Lake Suchitlán, there are few colonial cities in Latin America as well preserved and so little exploited by tourism, so it is a delight to walk through its streets surrounded by colors, history and especially the Salvadoran peaceful life. Important notice! If you come to Suchitoto you are going to get your hands dirty because we are in one of the great centers of natural production of indigo. For those who do not know what I’m saying, indigo is a plant whose lea...

El Salvador is set to eclipse Honduras as the country with the highest homicide rate in the world. There have already been over 5,700 murders this year in a country with a population of just over six million. El Salvador’s murder rate is now the highest it’s been since the end of the country’s brutal civil war — there is on average around one murder an hour. The staggering death toll follows the breakdown of a truce between powerful, rival gangs and the government. The government's crackdown on the gangs in the capital has forced gang members to spread out all over the country and with them they have taken high levels of violence. In part four of our five-part series, VICE News correspondent Danny Gold reports on how it is the country's youngest who are often most at risk from the viole...

El Salvador has a population of a little more than 6 million people, less than New York City. But the violence in the small Central American country is out of control. It has a murder rate 22 times higher than that of the United States. One recent month saw more than 900 homicides. By comparison, in all of 2015, New York had 352. Many blame the country’s two main gang groups...MS-13 and Barrio 18. The rival groups are constantly warring with each other in turf battles, with the people of El Salvador caught in the middle. Truces have failed time and again, and the government has gone as far as labeling the two groups “terrorists.” On this edition of Global Journalist, we look at a country that was once torn apart by a civil war in the 1980’s, and how it’s being threatened by a very differ...

Spanish/Nat The sale of second-hand tyres imported from North America and Europe has become a prosperous business in El Salvador. Control regulations in the country are not as stringent as those in developed countries and the business now rivals the sale of new tyres. But ecologists are claiming that this influx is causing a catastrophe as tonnes of cheap tyres are being burnt in place of wood - emitting dangerous fumes in to the atmosphere. Second-hand tyres are big business in El Salvador. Tyres that are no longer legal or are replaced in North America and Europe are finding their way on to the streets of the country. The business is now so established that it rivals the sale of new tyres. However, its development has not been monitored or supervised and ecologists a...

Juayúa is a municipality in the Sonsonate department of El Salvador. Juayua is a quaint little town up in the mountains, founded in 1577. The town's central plaza faces an old white cathedral that features a black Christ statue. This statue is a sister statue to that of the revered Basilica of Esquipulas in Guatemala and was carved by Quirio Cantano in the late 16th Century. The town has become a popular tourist attraction, locally and internationally due to its beautiful views and events, like the "Feria Gastronomica" the translation of which means "food festival".They have activities on the weekends and there is a coffee museum nearby. Spanish/Nat Former street gang members in El Salvador have united to form a group offering health care and advice to violent gangs in the capital, San Salvador. Many members of the gangs, made up mostly of unemployed youths, grew up in the U-S after their parents fled the civil war in El Salvador. Having returned after the war, the youngsters brought the lessons learnt in the some of the crime-ridden cities of the U-S back to their homeland. 'Homies Unidos' hopes to help the youths find an alternative to their violent lifestyle. This is gang-controlled territory in San Salvador. But Claudia Reyes, better known as "La Guera", can move freely here because she brings medical care to the youths. She is welcomed by them because she also belongs to a gang. But "Homies...
Spanish/Nat XFA El Salvador is still reeling from the effects of Tuesday's earthquake, the second in less than a month. The earthquake measured six-point-six on the Richter scale and the death toll has risen to 276 people. In San Vicente, El Salvadorean doctors are working alongside a team of Mexican army doctors to take care of the hundreds of people left homeless and wounded. The main hospital in the town is overflowing with patients, so Mexican field doctors have set up a makeshift medical tent to attend the wounded. Doctors on site are concerned earth tremors felt since the earthquake may mean yet another earthquake is to come, bringing more misery and devastation. Meanwhile Spanish Queen Sofia visited an orphanage in San Salvador on Thursday with El Salvador's Fi...

In Central America, the spiral of violence and crime among young people is a very complex problem that the state can not solve on their own. Lack consensus and consistency between the various measures covering police and judicial intervention, education, employment opportunities and health, among others. The gangs are the best structured youth organization. In El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, where the problem is alarming, government responses point strongly towards measures and repressive laws. "This strategy has been counterproductive. The bands are better organized as a reaction to the harsh police action. This documentary shows how a 16-year-old is capable of handling the destinies of an entire neighborhood in a suburb of San Salvador with his gang, there is almost no middle class neighborhood and low non tempts a gang in this country.
This is a documentary about gangs in El Salvador by a French producer that few years later was also killed by the gang, this is a small prof from the kind of life of these young people, who are often children who die daily in the streets of this small country, today there is almost no neighborhood without the presence of gangs and the government is still unable to find an a solution.

A girl cries in the early morning
Woken by the sound of a gun
She knows somewhere somebody's dying
Beneath the rising sun
Outside the window of her cabaña
The shadows are full of her fears
She knows her lover is out there somewhere
He's been on the run for a year
Oh, the soul of El Salvador
Bells ring out in the chapel steeple
A priest prepares to say mass
The sad congregation come tired and hungry
To pray that trouble will pass
Meanwhile the sun rises over the dusty streets
Where his crowd gathers round.
Flies and mosquitoes are drinking from pools of blood
Where the boby is found
Oh, the soul of El Salvador
Out on the ranch the rich man's preparing
To go for his morning ride
They've saddled his horse out in the corral
He walks out full of pride
He looks like a cowboy from one of those pictures
A president made in the past
Peasants in rags, the stand back for they know
That El Rico travels fast
Over the soul of El Salvador
A girl cries in the early morning
Woken by the sound of a gun
She knows somewhere somebody's dying
Beneath the rising sun
Outside the window of her cabaña
The shadows are full of her fears
She knows her lover is out there somewhere
He's been on the run for a year
Oh, the soul of El Salvador
Oh, the soul of El Salvador
