This documentary, broadcast in 2001, examines the stories of three women whose lives and experiences helped shape new legislation and attitudes towards women in the 19th century. Uploaded for educational purposes only. Any advertising that appears is unbidden.

From Utopian societies to the Second Great Awakening to the Abolition movement, American society was undergoing great changes in the first half of the 19th century. Street Life in London, published in 1876-7, consists of a series of articles by the radical journalist Adolphe Smith and the photographer John Thomson. The pieces are short but full of detail, based on interviews with a range of men and women who eked out a precarious and marginal existence working on the streets of London, including flower-sellers, chimney-sweeps, shoe-blacks, chair-caners, musicians, dustmen and locksmiths. The subject matter of Street Life was not new -- the second half of the 19th century saw an increasing interest in urban poverty and social conditions -- but the unique selling point of Street Life was a series of photographs 'taken from life' by Thomson. The authors felt at the time that the images lent authenticity to the text, and their book is now regarded as a key work in the history of documentary photography.

In which John Green finally gets around to talking about some women's history. In the 19th Century, the United States was changing rapidly, as we noted in the recent Market Revolution and Reform Movements episodes. Things were also in a state of flux for women. The reform movements, which were in large part driven by women, gave these self-same women the idea that they could work on their own behalf, and radically improve the state of their own lives. So, while these women were working on prison reform, education reform, and abolition, they also started talking about equal rights, universal suffrage, temperance, and fair pay. Women like Susan B. Anthony, Carry Nation, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the Grimkés, and Lucretia Mott strove tirelessly to improve the lot of American women, and it worked, eventually. John will teach you about the Christian Temperance Union, the Seneca Falls Convention, the Declaration of Sentiments, and a whole bunch of other stuff that made life better for women.

England: Heroes of Steam
Until the 19th century, power meant wind, water and muscles. Then, in Britain, a new force was prized from nature: the power of steam, harnessed by the steam engine.
Engineers and inventors became heroes and the buildings housing the machinery were temples for the new age.
The early engines, some the size of a three-story house, were used to pump surplus water from mines and drinking water from rivers.
Every steam engineer's ambition was to achieve locomotion. The first to succeed was Richard Trevithick. In 1804, he won a bet that his machine could carry 10 tons of iron along nine miles of a Welsh tramway. But his engines proved too heavy for regular rail use.

Franz Joseph Haydn's oratorio, "The Creation," published in 1800, told the biblical story of Genesis: God made the world in six days and crowned his creation with man. In the 19th century, this popular belief was challenged by a radical secular idea.
It was developed in an English village in the course of a quest for a new understanding of nature.
Scientists already knew the world was very old. They believed that animals had evolved from primitive forms. What they did not know was how.
Charles Darwin was the first to solve the problem with his theory of evolution.

When the American West was opened up by mechanization and the railroad, the first white settlers found the prairie too tough to tame. Already home to other cultures, it was considered a space to be crossed, not occupied.
The Plains sustained tribes of Native Americans who lived with herds of buffalo and dreamed of empires. One people, the Sioux, had a vision of dominion over mountains, deserts and forests. They ranged over the land on horseback and imagined it united. With guns bought from Europeans, they pursued their own territorial ambitions.
But there was one rival they couldn't match: the invading white man. With his industrialized machines, this new enemy made war on indigenous cultures and used belief in "manifest destiny" to justify conquering the whole of the continent.

China: Defeated by Addiction
China began the 19th century still confident of her superiority over the rest of the world. Her population numbered 400 million. Her empire controlled the world's biggest economy.
China enjoyed a favorable balance of trade with the West, receiving great quantities of money to pay for silks, porcelain and, above all, tea. By 1800, the British consumed 10,000 tons of tea each year.
All foreign trade was channeled through designated warehouses in what was then the world's largest city, Canton.
So much money poured into China that a Chinese trader became the richest man in the world: Wu Ping-chien, known as Howqua, one of the few officially allowed to trade with foreigners.

Europe: Industrial Revolution
In 19th century Britain, workers' lives were transformed. Weaving was no longer done at home, but in factories on machines operated by hand and foot.
Work was controlled by a new invention -- punch cards -- as automated production patterns were repeated over and over again.
Then came steam. Conditions were transformed by relentless noise and danger. Workers had become merely the extensions of machines.
Every extraordinary inventiveness contrasted with oppressive working conditions. Dust and fumes choked factories and poisoned workers.
Spreading across the Western world, factories transformed the landscape, smothering crowded cities with smoke and grime.
From the exploitation of factory workers emerged the struggle for trade unions, which helped gain political representation and new rights for working men, women and children.

The 19th century (1 January 1801 – 31 December 1900) was the century marked by the collapse of the Spanish, First and Second French, Chinese,Holy Roman and Mughal empires. This paved the way for the growing influence of the British Empire, the Russian Empire, the United States, the German Empire, the Second French Colonial Empire and the Empire of Japan, with the British boasting unchallenged dominance after 1815. After the defeat of the French Empire and its allies in the Napoleonic Wars, the British and Russian empires expanded greatly, becoming the world's leading powers. The Russian Empire expanded in central and far eastern Asia. The British Empire grew rapidly in the first half of the century, especially with the expansion of vast territories in Canada, Australia, South Africa and heavily populated India, and in the last two decades of the century in Africa. By the end of the century, the British Empire controlled a fifth of the world's land and one quarter of the world's population. During the post Napoleonic era it enforced what became known as the Pax Britannica, which helped trade.

Street Life in London, published in 1876-7, consists of a series of articles by the radical journalist Adolphe Smith and the photographer John Thomson. The pieces are short but full of detail, based on interviews with a range of men and women who eked out a precarious and marginal existence working on the streets of London, including flower-sellers, chimney-sweeps, shoe-blacks, chair-caners, musicians, dustmen and locksmiths. The subject matter of Street Life was not new -- the second half of the 19th century saw an increasing interest in urban poverty and social conditions -- but the unique selling point of Street Life was a series of photographs 'taken from life' by Thomson. The authors felt at the time that the images lent authenticity to the text, and their book is now regarded as a key work in the history of documentary photography.

So, while these women were working on prison reform, education reform, and abolition, they also started talking about equal rights, universal suffrage, temperance, and fair pay. Women like Susan B. Until the 19th century, power meant wind, water and muscles. Then, in Britain, a new force was prized from nature: the power of steam, harnessed by the steam engine.
Engineers and inventors became heroes and the buildings housing the machinery were temples for the new age.
The early engines, some the size of a three-story house, were used to pump surplus water from mines and drinking water from rivers.
Every steam engineer's ambition was to achieve locomotion. The first to succeed was Richard Trevithick. In 1804, he won a bet that his machine could carry 10 tons of iron along nine miles of a Welsh tramway. But his engines proved too heavy for regular rail use.

Franz Joseph Haydn's oratorio, "The Creation," published in 1800, told the biblical story of Genesis: God made the world in six days and crowned his creation with man. In the 19th century, this popular belief was challenged by a radical secular idea.
It was developed in an English village in the course of a quest for a new understanding of nature.
Scientists already knew the world was very old. They believed that animals had evolved from primitive forms. What they did not know was how.
Charles Darwin was the first to solve the problem with his theory of evolution.

North America: Empire of the West
When the American West was opened up by mechanization and the railroad, the first white settlers found the prairie too tough to tame. Already home to other cultures, it was considered a space to be crossed, not occupied.
The Plains sustained tribes of Native Americans who lived with herds of buffalo and dreamed of empires. One people, the Sioux, had a vision of dominion over mountains, deserts and forests. They ranged over the land on horseback and imagined it united. With guns bought from Europeans, they pursued their own territorial ambitions.
But there was one rival they couldn't match: the invading white man. With his industrialized machines, this new enemy made war on indigenous cultures and used belief in "manifest destiny" to justify conquering the whole of the continent.

China: Defeated by Addiction
China began the 19th century still confident of her superiority over the rest of the world. Her population numbered 400 million. Her empire controlled the world's biggest economy.
China enjoyed a favorable balance of trade with the West, receiving great quantities of money to pay for silks, porcelain and, above all, tea. By 1800, the British consumed 10,000 tons of tea each year.
All foreign trade was channeled through designated warehouses in what was then the world's largest city, Canton.
So much money poured into China that a Chinese trader became the richest man in the world: Wu Ping-chien, known as Howqua, one of the few officially allowed to trade with foreigners.

Europe: Industrial Revolution
In 19th century Britain, workers' lives were transformed. Weaving was no longer done at home, but in factories on machines operated by hand and foot.
Work was controlled by a new invention -- punch cards -- as automated production patterns were repeated over and over again.
Then came steam. Conditions were transformed by relentless noise and danger. Workers had become merely the extensions of machines.
Every extraordinary inventiveness contrasted with oppressive working conditions. Dust and fumes choked factories and poisoned workers.
Spreading across the Western world, factories transformed the landscape, smothering crowded cities with smoke and grime.
From the exploitation of factory workers emerged the struggle for trade unions, which helped gain political representation and new rights for working men, women and children.

Sai Baba of Shirdi, also known as Shirdi Sai Baba, was an Indian spiritual master who was regarded by his devotees as a saint, fakir, and satguru, according to their individual proclivities and beliefs. He was revered by both his Hindu and Muslim devotees, and during, as well as after, his life it remained uncertain if he was a Hindu or a Muslim. This, however, was of no consequence to Sai Baba. He stressed the importance of surrender to the true Satguru or Murshid, who, having trod the path to divine consciousness, will lead the disciple through the jungle of spiritual training.
Sai Baba is worshipped by people around the world. He had no love for perishable things and his sole concern was realization of the self. By the second half of the nineteenth century it was believed that respectable young women of the middle classes were imitating the styles and manners of the demi-monde and were thus blurring the necessary visual distinctions between the pure and the fallen. Respectable women had been seduced by the discourse around fashion and had lost their subtle purity and become brash and vulgar. In France, James Tissot painted a series of pictures entitled The Women of Paris, depicting fashionable women in a number of different locations and settings and in England the worrying habits of 'The Girl of the Period' became one of the most pressing issues for social columnists and correspondence in the press.
This lecture will examine the representation of these new types of fashionable women and the social implications of the visual confusion of respectable and non-respectable women in the public spaces of Paris and London.

By the second half of the nineteenth century it was believed that respectable young women of the middle classes were imitating the styles and manners of the demi-monde and were thus blurring the necessary visual distinctions between the pure and the fallen. Respectable women had been seduced by the discourse around fashion and had lost their subtle purity and become brash and vulgar. In France, James Tissot painted a series of pictures entitled The Women of Paris, depicting fashionable women in a number of different locations and settings and in England the worrying habits of 'The Girl of the Period' became one of the most pressing issues for social columnists and correspondence in the press.
This lecture will examine the representation of these new types of fashionable women and the social implications of the visual confusion of respectable and non-respectable women in the public spaces of Paris and London.
