Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center radiation oncologist Nancy Lee gives patients with head and neck cancer new hope using a technology called IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy). Patient John McPeak and Dr. Lee describe how she used this targeted approach to completely eliminate a tumor at the base of his tongue, while also preserving both his speech and his quality of life.

My name is Nancy Lee. I’m an associate attending at the department of radiation and oncology focusing on head and neck cancer. John is a patient of mine. He was diagnosed with cancer involving the base of the tongue.
When they found it, it had already metastasized over here. My cancer has four stages and I was in the fourth stage. So, that was rather exciting [laughs].
Patients, many times when they have cancer, they feel very nervous and they feel like they have a death sentence basically. When they come to see me, after explaining all the radiation, I give them hope because there is hope.
Her focus was so intense and so warm that you couldn’t walk away from it. I remember saying to her that I was worried about the quality of life afterwards, particularly the fact that since the cancer is centered here, and all of my business is done talking, you’ve got to save my voice. Don’t take away my voice and say ‘fine, you’re cured.’ She said, ‘you’re fine, I’m an artist.’

Radiation therapy (in American English), radiation oncology, or radiotherapy (in the UK, Canada and Australia), sometimes abbreviated to XRT or DXT, is the medical use of ionizing radiation, generally as part of cancer treatment to control or kill malignant cells. Radiation therapy may be curative in a number of types of cancer if they are localized to one area of the body. It may also be used as part of curative therapy, to prevent tumor recurrence after surgery to remove a primary malignant tumor (for example, early stages of breast cancer). Radiation therapy is synergistic with chemotheraphy, and has been used before, during, and after chemotherapy in susceptible cancers.
Radiation therapy is commonly applied to the cancerous tumor because of its ability to control cell growth. Ionizing radiation works by damaging the DNA of exposed tissue leading to cellular death. To spare normal tissues (such as skin or organs which radiation must pass through in order to treat the tumor), shaped radiation beams are aimed from several angles of exposure to intersect at the tumor, providing a much larger absorbed dose there than in the surrounding, healthy tissue. Besides the tumour itself, the radiation fields may also include the draining lymph nodes if they are clinically or radiologically involved with tumor, or if there is thought to be a risk of subclinical malignant spread. It is necessary to include a margin of normal tissue around the tumor to allow for uncertainties in daily set-up and internal tumor motion. These uncertainties can be caused by internal movement (for example, respiration and bladder filling) and movement of external skin marks relative to the tumor position.

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center radiation oncologist Nancy Lee gives patients with head and neck cancer new hope using a technology called IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy). Patient John McPeak and Dr. Lee describe how she used this targeted approach to completely eliminate a tumor at the base of his tongue, while also preserving both his speech and his quality of life.

My name is Nancy Lee. I’m an associate attending at the department of radiation and oncology focusing on head and neck cancer. John is a patient of mine. He was diagnosed with cancer involving the base of the tongue.
When they found it, it had already metastasized over here. My cancer has four stages and I was in the fourth stage. So, that was rather exciting [laughs].
Patients, many times when they have cancer, they feel very nervous and they feel like they have a death sentence basically. When they come to see me, after explaining all the radiation, I give them hope because there is hope.
Her focus was so intense and so warm that you couldn’t walk away from it. I remember saying to her that I was worried about the quality of life afterwards, particularly the fact that since the cancer is centered here, and all of my business is done talking, you’ve got to save my voice. Don’t take away my voice and say ‘fine, you’re cured.’ She said, ‘you’re fine, I’m an artist.’

He also trained in brachytherapy at the Brigham & Women's Hospital, Harvard.
Following his residency, Dr. Mohiuddin was an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland in Baltimore for three years, specializing in breast and gynecological malignancies. He was in private practice in Houston with Northwest Radiation Oncology and a clinical adjunct professor at the University of Texas before joining ROCL in August 2012.
He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and received several research awards. He has been an invited speaker at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), the American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO), and the US Food and Drug Agency (FDA). He has lectured nationally on behalf of Varian Medical Systems. He has experience with Varian IMRT (RapidArc), stereotactic modalities including CyberKnife, and proton therapy. He has also published poetry about the cancer experience.
Dr. Mohiuddin is happily married, prompting his move to Chicago where they both have extensive family roots. In his spare time, he enjoys creative writing, tennis, and the outdoors.
When asked why he chose Radiation Oncology, he states: "my patients' stories move me deeply; I want to help them (and myself) understand some of life's vicissitudes while offering a solution in the form of technologically advanced and compassionate care."
