Canonization is the act by which the Orthodox, Oriental Orthodoxy, Roman Catholic, or Anglican Church declares that a person who has died was a saint, upon which declaration the person is included in the canon, or list, of recognized saints. Originally, people were recognized as saints without any formal process. Later, different processes, such as those used today in the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches, were developed.
The first people honored as saints were the martyrs. Pious legends of their deaths were considered to affirm the truth of their faith in Christ.
The Roman Rite's Canon of the Mass contains the names only of martyrs, along with that of the Virgin Mary and, since 1962, that of Saint Joseph.
By the fourth century, however, "confessors"—people who had confessed their faith not by dying but by word and life—began to be venerated publicly. Examples of such people are Saint Hilarion and Saint Ephrem the Syrian in the East, and Saint Martin of Tours and Saint Hilary of Poitiers in the West. Their names were inserted in the diptychs, the lists of saints explicitly venerated in the liturgy, and their tombs were honoured in like manner as those of the martyrs. Since the witness of their lives was not as unequivocal as that of the martyrs, they were venerated publicly only with the approval by the local bishop. This process is often referred to as "local canonization".
Mother Teresa (26 August 1910 – 5 September 1997) also known as Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, MC, was an Albanian Roman Catholic religious sister and missionary. She was born in Skopje (modern Macedonia), then part of the Kosovo Vilayet in the Ottoman Empire. After having lived in Macedonia for some eighteen years, she moved to Ireland and then to India, where she lived for most of her life.
Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation, which in 2012 consisted of over 4,500 sisters and was active in 133 countries. They run hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis; soup kitchens; dispensaries and mobile clinics; children's and family counselling programmes; orphanages; and schools. Members must adhere to the vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, as well as a fourth vow, to give "wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor".
Mother Teresa was the recipient of numerous honours, including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. In 2003, she was beatified as "Blessed Teresa of Calcutta". A second miracle was credited to her intercession by Pope Francis, in December 2015, paving the way for her to be recognised as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.
Una maleta pequeña
Un casi amaneciendo el día
Traveler checks y hay una fotografía
Sueños en cámara lenta
Pedazos de monotonía
Un rompecabezas,
qué pasará con mi vida?
Mañana sólo Dios dirá
Voy apostar mi juventud
Voy estrenar mi libertad
No queda tiempo para más
Puedo perder el autobus
Y va empezar la cuenta atrás
Quién soy yo?
Un poco de miedo, una duda
Un deseo, un amor
No puedo contestar
Quién soy yo?
Le pregunté al espejo y sonrió
Y al rato descubrió Quién soy yo?
Luna de agosto atrevida
Me sigues como un detective
Que es lo que buscas?
Deja que el viento me cuide
Quiero subir hasta el cielo
Sin alas, sin paracaídas
Tiempo de vuelo
Toda mi vida
Mañana sólo Dios dirá
Voy apostar mi juventud
Y a empezar la cuenta atrás
Quién soy yo?
Un poco de miedo, una duda
Un deseo, un amor
Quién soy yo?
No puedo contestar
Quién soy yo?
Le pregunté al espejo y sonrió
Y al rato descubrió Quién soy yo?
Quién soy yo?
Un poco de miedo, una duda
Un deseo, un amor
No puedo contestar
