Ebola virus disease (EVD), also known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever (EHF) or simply Ebola, is a viral hemorrhagic fever of humans and other primates caused by ebolaviruses. Signs and symptoms typically start between two days and three weeks after contracting the virus with a fever, sore throat, muscular pain, and headaches. Then, vomiting, diarrhea and rash usually follow, along with decreased function of the liver and kidneys. At this time some people begin to bleed both internally and externally. The disease has a high risk of death, killing between 25 and 90 percent of those infected, with an average of about 50 percent. This is often due to low blood pressure from fluid loss, and typically follows six to sixteen days after symptoms appear.
The virus spreads by direct contact with body fluids, such as blood, of an infected human or other animals. This may also occur through contact with an item recently contaminated with bodily fluids. Spread of the disease through the air between primates, including humans, has not been documented in either laboratory or natural conditions.Semen or breast milk of a person after recovery from EVD may carry the virus for several weeks to months.Fruit bats are believed to be the normal carrier in nature, able to spread the virus without being affected by it. Other diseases such as malaria, cholera, typhoid fever, meningitis and other viral hemorrhagic fevers may resemble EVD. Blood samples are tested for viral RNA, viral antibodies or for the virus itself to confirm the diagnosis.

VICE News Exclusive: Part 1 of "The Fight Against Ebola" - http://bit.ly/Ebola-Part-1 West Africa is being plagued by a new outbreak of Ebola — a terrifying disease that causes its victims to bleed to death from the inside out. Ebola has no cure, and the latest epidemic is spreading fast. VICE News visited Liberia, where many feel the new outbreak began, borne from the bushmeat markets of Lofa. Western scientists feel that the consumption and preparation of meat from monkeys, fruit bats, and other forest animals is behind the transmission of Ebola, and possibly a new supervirus, which if left uncontrolled could kill a third of the world's population. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is not understood how the Ebola virus first appears in humans in the event of an outbreak. But how it is spread to other victims is fairly well understood. Ebola is not an airborne virus, the CDC says on its website, meaning it cannot spread by, for example, sitting next to an infected person in a bus or on a train. Ebola in general does not spread via water or food, or insects like mosquitoes, although it may be spread by eating bushmeat or coming into contact with infected animals. The virus can only be spread among humans by a patient who is already showing symptoms, such as fever, flu-like body pain, abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting. To become infected, a person needs to come into contact with an infecte...

A nurse in Spain has become the first person to contract the Ebola virus outside of Africa after caring for an infected priest who had been flown back from Sierra Leone for treatment. The nurse reportedly entered Manuel Garcia Viejo's hospital room once to treat him and on one other occasion to collect his belongings after he died on September 25. Although the nurse’s only symptom so far is a fever, two tests have confirmed her diagnosis of Ebola, the Washington Post reported. According to Reuters, she went on holiday immediately after Garcia's death and began feeling sick on Sept 30. Some 30 health care workers who came in contact with the nurse will be put under monitoring for a 21-day period, Reuters reported. Authorities are trying to determine how exactly the nurse contracted ...

MB-003 is a cocktail of 3 monoclonal antibodies, originally developed for the treatment of Ebola Virus Disease. These mAbs bind to non-overlapping epitopes on Ebola virus glycoprotein, and one of the mAbs is also reactive with Sudan, Reston, and Tai Forest virus. The mAbs have been chimerized with a human constant region and expressed using a Rapid Antibody Manufacturing Platform in Nicotiana benthamiana. Individually the mAbs protect mice from lethal challenge prophylactically and two days post-exposure at doses less than or equal to 5mg/kg. When cocktailed, MB-003 protects Rhesus macaques from lethal IM challenge: 1000 pfu, with 100% protection demonstrated when treatment was initiated 1 hour post exposure, 67%-100% protection when initiated 1 or 2 days post exposure, and 43% protectio...

Outbreaks thus far have been limited due to the implementation of strict isolation, sterilization, and waste disposal procedures; the remoteness of areas in which the outbreaks appeared; and the fact that the virus kills so quickly that many of its victims die before it can be transmitted. Most recently, the Ebola virus struck in the city of Kikwit in Zaire, Africa, in early 1995 and killed almost 250 people before it was contained. Medical experts and relief workers went to work quickly to locate victims, to provide educational and prevention services to neighbors and families, and to research the Ebola virus.
can't recognized that your days are counted
you think you got a cold
but the next day you spit out your innards
your lungs are just a braddlin mud
feasting from inside your body
you cry bloodstained tears of the incredible
pressure from your eyes
braincells rotting, fever burns - Ebola
skin is bursting, everything hurts - Ebola
the virus got ya, the virus kill ya - Ebola
you're cursed to death with Ebola
you'll die a painful death and all
who be with you get infected
no way to escape
the virus will survive!
