Nature notes
The first swallows arrived over the weekend. They were mainly solitary birds, and most of them were seen in skies over the western half of Britain, especially in Cornwall and in Wales. One often detects them first by the sweet twittering notes that come trickling down from above, and then one looks up and sees them sweeping by or circling round gracefully. Their forked tails with long streamers either side are conspicuous, and their glossy, dark blue backs may catch the sunlight as they turn. Of the other members of the swallow family, the little brown sand martins are now becoming more common over lakes, and a few more house martins have been noticed. Over Dungeness, Kent, an alpine swift has been seen — another bird that feeds on insects in the skies, although it is not a member of the swallow family. It has the same curved back wings as the common swifts, which will arrive in late April, but is much larger, with a distinct white stomach.
