In which John Green teaches you about relations between the early English colonists and the native people the encountered in the New World. In short, these relations were poor. As soon as they arrived, the English were in conflict with the native people. In this episode, you'll learn about Wahunsunacawh (who the English called Powhatan), his daughter Pocahontas, King Philip's (aka Metacom) War, and the Mystic Massacre. By and large, the history of the Natives and the English was not a ...
Articles - a, an & the - English Grammar lesson Take the quiz - http://www.learnex.in/articles-a-an-the/ The 3 articles in English are a, an and the. The learner has to decide noun-by-noun which one of the articles to use. In fact, there are 4 choices to make, because sometimes no article is necessary. Native-speakers, of course, use the articles correctly without thinking. English learners, on the other hand, need to have some guidelines for making the right choice - particularly those learners whose own language does not have articles. The guidelines that follow in this lesson should help ESL students to a basic understanding of English article use. The words a, an and the are known as articles. • We use an before words that begin with vowels (a,e,i,o,u). E.g. I found an oran...

A Chosen People? Episode image for A Chosen People? Episode 1 of 3 Duration: 1 hour The first in a three-part series in which Diarmaid MacCulloch, professor of church history at Oxford University and presenter of the award-winning BBC series A History of Christianity, explores both what it means to be English and what has shaped English identity, from the Dark Ages, through the Reformation to modern times. Professor MacCulloch identifies three broad traits commonly associated with the English - the idea that the English think they are better than others, the idea that they are a specially tolerant people and the idea that to be English, quintessentially is to be white, Anglo-Saxon and Church of England Christian. He investigates whether these stereotypes are accurate and looks at what f...

A third-year female student who are studying at Beltei International University got the third place for her English Speaking Contest program, final round. Though she got number 3, but she's still the outstanding one because before she were selected to join the final round, she went through and was the first winner from the first and second round. It's still the great chance for her even though she became the third place for the final round. She still looked delighted on her memorable day. She promised to join another English Speaking Test and determined to get the first rank for another contest. She could speak English well like the foreigner and was able to catch the audiences' attentions. She looked enthusiastic and confident. I also was the audience and I could say she performed well. The series ran in 2003.[1] The modern Frisian language is the closest sounding language to the English used approximately 2000 years ago, when the people from what is now the north of the Netherlands travelled to what would become England, and pushed the Celtic language - ancestor of modern Welsh - (Celts) to the western side of the island. Words like "blue" can be recognised in the Frisian language. Bragg then discusses how English dialects in certain areas of the United Kingdom were heavily influenced by histor...

There is material of similar interest at www.ChurchGrowth.CC - This video is a TV episode of Secrets of the Dead, on PBS. It is rare to find an accurate representation of Christianity by the media. This episode starts with discussion of early church manuscripts and how the Roman Catholic Church kept the World ignorant of the Bible text by reading it in Latin. This involves the martyrdom of John Wycliffe, William Tyndale, and Thomas Cranmer.

Recent research suggests that English national identity is closely associated with Euroscepticism. The referendum of 23 June might therefore be interpreted as a contest between a resurgent Englishness and more multi-national conceptions of identity. In light of the referendum's result, what does the Leave vote tell us about Englishness, Euroscepticism and the pre-referendum assumptions that we had about the English? This event analysed the outcome, what it tells us about being English, and what it means for England as part of the UK and for the connections between its regions. Panellists include: Mary Riddell, Daily Telegraph (Chair) Simon Heffer, Daily Telegraph Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, The Independent and London Evening Standard Rt Hon Prof John Denham, Centre for English Identity and Po...
