Turkish Cypriots are ethnic Turks originating from Cyprus. Following the Ottoman conquest of the island in 1571, about 30,000 Turkish settlers were given land once they arrived in Cyprus, Additionally, many of the islanders converted to Islam during the early years of Ottoman rule. Nonetheless, the influx of mainly Muslim settlers to Cyprus continued intermittently until the end of the Ottoman period. The fact that Turkish was the main language spoken by the Muslims of the island is a significant indicator that the majority of them were either Turkish-speaking Anatolians or otherwise from a Turkic background which bequeathed a significant Turkish community, today's Turkish Cypriots.
Today, while Northern Cyprus is home to a significant part of the Turkish Cypriot population, the majority of Turkish Cypriots live abroad, forming the Turkish Cypriot diaspora. This diaspora came into existence after the Ottoman Empire transferred the control of the island to the British Empire, as many Turkish Cypriots emigrated primarily to Turkey and the United Kingdom for political and economic reasons. The emigration was exacerbated by the intercommunal violence in the 1950s and 1960s, as Turkish Cypriots had to live in enclaves in Cyprus.

STORYLINE
Hard-line challenger Dervis Eroglu has won a key Turkish Cypriot leadership election, vowing to continue peace talks amid fears his victory could grind reunification negotiations with the Greek Cypriots to a halt and scuttle Turkey''s bid for European Union membership.
Eroglu won just enough votes for an outright victory on Sunday, with 50.38 percent, compared to leftist incumbent Mehmet Ali Talat''s 42.85 percent, according to results posted on the Turkish Cypriot High Electoral Board''s Web site.
Candidates needed 50 percent plus one vote to avoid a runoff.
It was a much closer race than expected, as opinion polls had consistently predicted Eroglu to win by a wide margin.
Eroglu assured supporters who rushed to his party headquarters in the northern, Turkish Cypriot half of the island''s divided capital, that he would not abandon negotiations aimed at reunifying the divided island.
However some residents in the Turkish Cypriot north of Nicosia on Monday expressed their concerns.
"I am worried about connection between south and north will finish, so discussions between the leaders of Turks and Greeks will stop," one man said.
A Greek resident of Nicosia said Turkey held power in the Turkish Cypriot part of island, regardless of the elected leader.
The island''s division is already hampering Turkey''s EU drive and could halt it if peace talks collapse.
Since Turkey is a NATO member such a move also could cripple closer cooperation between the military alliance and the EU, and increase regional instability.
A Greek Cypriot government spokesman told state-run CyBC TV that the election outcome was a "negative development," but that Greek Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias would press on with negotiations.
Cyprus was split in 1974 when Turkey invaded after a coup by supporters of union with Greece.
Turkish Cypriots declared the independent republic in 1983, but only Turkey recognises it, and maintains 35-thousand troops there.
Divided Cyprus joined the EU in 2004, with only the internationally recognised south''s 800-thousand Greek Cypriots enjoying membership benefits.
The island''s division is already blocking parts of Turkey''s EU membership negotiation process because of Ankara''s refusal to recognise the Greek Cypriot government.
Although Eroglu insists he would continue peace talks, he''s at odds with an agreement between Talat and Christofias envisioning a future partnership under a federal roof.

DAY IN COURT FOR TURKISH SPEAKING CYPRIOTS
WHO FLEW THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS FLAG
One year ago, on June 21, 2013, couple Koray Basdogrultmaci and Cinel Senem Husseyin were arrested in occupied Famagusta, when they unfurled and flew three Republic of Cyprus flags in front of their shop, proclaiming their non recognition of the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and their sole recognition of the Republic of Cyprus and its legitimate national flag.
One day earlier, the RoC flag had been ceremoniously flown in Mersin, Turkey, for the Mediterranean Games, in the very presence of Turkish PM Mr Recep Tayip Erdogan, while TRNC did not participate in the athletic event.
Koray Basdogrultmaci and Cinel Senem Husseyin, who self-define as Turkish speaking Cypriots and not Turkish Cypriots, were protesting the fact that one can fly the legitimate RoC flag in Turkey, but not in Cyprus. They were also making a case against the Turkish occupation of Cyprus and Turkey's role in the destructive embargo and isolation of the occupied part of the island.
Despite the fact that in the so-called TRNC there is no law regarding flags, the three RoC flags were confiscated by the "police" and Koray Basdogrultmaci and Cinel Senem Husseyin were arrested and charged with disturbing the peace and not recognizing the TRNC and its flag.
The case has already been taken to court four times and each time the judging has been adjourned. The last time, on April 9, Koray Basdogrultmaci and Cinel Senem Husseyin were asked to offer their apology, for the case to be closed and for only a small fine to be imposed. Both Koray Basdogrultmaci and Cinel Senem Husseyin refused to apologize so the trial has been set for this coming Tuesday, May 6th, at 8.30 am in Famagusta, with the accused couple being warned with the imposition of a much steeper fine or even a jail term.
Koray and Cinel have bravely reiterated their position, stating that they will refuse to pay whichever fine, will gladly go to jail, then will proceed with taking their case against Turkey as an illegitimate occupying force to the European Court of Justice.

It is clear that Cyprus Turkish Folk Music is under the influence of Anatolian folk music although it developed its local characteristics as well. Most of the folk songs were known orally since the collecting and documenting this kind of information was delayed due to the unorganized life of the Turkish Cypriots until 1974 under the impact of their political struggle for survival.
Editing of Turkish folk music has begun in 1973 and they were recorded in musical notes. The research for the discovery of the unforgotten folk songs are still going on. The Turkish Folk Music group established by the government and others by private institutions are contributing to the activities of Turkish Folk Music actively today. Has-Der which is an Association of Folk Arts is rather active in collecting and editing Cypriot Folk music and dances as well as some other cultural and anthropological aspects of Cyprus.

Cyprus is the third largest and third most populous island in the Mediterranean, and a member state of the European Union. It is located south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel, north of Egypt and east of Greece.
The earliest known human activity on the island dates to around the 10th millennium BC. Archaeological remains from this period include the well-preserved Neolithic village of Khirokitia, and Cyprus is home to some of the oldest water wells in the world. Cyprus was settled by Mycenaean Greeks in two waves in the 2nd millennium BC. As a strategic location in the Middle East, it was subsequently occupied by several major powers, including the empires of the Assyrians, Egyptians and Persians, from whom the island was seized in 333 BC by Alexander the Great. Subsequent rule by Ptolemaic Egypt, the Classical and Eastern Roman Empire, Arab caliphates for a short period, the French Lusignan dynasty and the Venetians, was followed by over three centuries of Ottoman rule between 1571 and 1878 (de jure until 1914).

The last time, on April 9, Koray Basdogrultmaci and Cinel Senem Husseyin were asked to offer their apology, for the case to be closed and for only a small fine to be imposed. Both Koray Basdogrultmaci and Cinel Senem Husseyin refused to apologize so the trial has been set for this coming Tuesday, May 6th, at 8.30 am in Famagusta, with the accused couple being warned with the imposition of a much steeper fine or even a jail term. Koray and Cinel have bravely reiterated their position, stating that they will refuse to pay whichever fine, will gladly go to jail, then will proceed with taking their case against Turkey as an illegitimate occupying force to the European Court of Justice. -

KARSILAMA HAVASI It is clear that Cyprus Turkish Folk Music is under the influence of Anatolian folk music although it developed its local characteristics as well. Most of the folk songs were known orally since the collecting and documenting this kind of information was delayed due to the unorganized life of the Turkish Cypriots until 1974 under the impact of their political struggle for survival. Editing of Turkish folk music has begun in 1973 and they were recorded in musical notes. The research for the discovery of the unforgotten folk songs are still going on. The Turkish Folk Music group established by the government and others by private institutions are contributing to the activities of Turkish Folk Music actively today. Has-Der which is an Association of Folk Arts is rather active in collecting and editing Cypriot Folk music and dances as well as some other cultural and anthropological aspects of Cyprus.

Hard-line challenger Dervis Eroglu has won a key Turkish Cypriot leadership election, vowing to continue peace talks amid fears his victory could grind reunification negotiations with the Greek Cypriots to a halt and scuttle Turkey''s bid for European Union membership.
Eroglu won just enough votes for an outright victory on Sunday, with 50.38 percent, compared to leftist incumbent Mehmet Ali Talat''s 42.85 percent, according to results posted on the Turkish Cypriot High Electoral Board''s Web site.
Candidates needed 50 percent plus one vote to avoid a runoff.
It was a much closer race than expected, as opinion polls had consistently predicted Eroglu to win by a wide margin.
Eroglu assured supporters who rushed to his party headquarters in the northern, Turkish Cypriot half of the island''s divided capital, that he would not abandon negotiations aimed at reunifying the divided island.
However some residents in the Turkish Cypriot north of Nicosia on Monday expressed their concerns.
"I am worried about connection between south and north will finish, so discussions between the leaders of Turks and Greeks will stop," one man said.
A Greek resident of Nicosia said Turkey held power in the Turkish Cypriot part of island, regardless of the elected leader.
The island''s division is already hampering Turkey''s EU drive and could halt it if peace talks collapse.
Since Turkey is a NATO member such a move also could cripple closer cooperation between the military alliance and the EU, and increase regional instability.
A Greek Cypriot government spokesman told state-run CyBC TV that the election outcome was a "negative development," but that Greek Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias would press on with negotiations.
Cyprus was split in 1974 when Turkey invaded after a coup by supporters of union with Greece.
Turkish Cypriots declared the independent republic in 1983, but only Turkey recognises it, and maintains 35-thousand troops there.
Divided Cyprus joined the EU in 2004, with only the internationally recognised south''s 800-thousand Greek Cypriots enjoying membership benefits.
The island''s division is already blocking parts of Turkey''s EU membership negotiation process because of Ankara''s refusal to recognise the Greek Cypriot government.
Although Eroglu insists he would continue peace talks, he''s at odds with an agreement between Talat and Christofias envisioning a future partnership under a federal roof.

WHO FLEW THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS FLAG
One year ago, on June 21, 2013, couple Koray Basdogrultmaci and Cinel Senem Husseyin were arrested in occupied Famagusta, when they unfurled and flew three Republic of Cyprus flags in front of their shop, proclaiming their non recognition of the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and their sole recognition of the Republic of Cyprus and its legitimate national flag.
One day earlier, the RoC flag had been ceremoniously flown in Mersin, Turkey, for the Mediterranean Games, in the very presence of Turkish PM Mr Recep Tayip Erdogan, while TRNC did not participate in the athletic event.
Koray Basdogrultmaci and Cinel Senem Husseyin, who self-define as Turkish speaking Cypriots and not Turkish Cypriots, were protesting the fact that one can fly the legitimate RoC flag in Turkey, but not in Cyprus. They were also making a case against the Turkish occupation of Cyprus and Turkey's role in the destructive embargo and isolation of the occupied part of the island.
Despite the fact that in the so-called TRNC there is no law regarding flags, the three RoC flags were confiscated by the "police" and Koray Basdogrultmaci and Cinel Senem Husseyin were arrested and charged with disturbing the peace and not recognizing the TRNC and its flag.
The case has already been taken to court four times and each time the judging has been adjourned. The last time, on April 9, Koray Basdogrultmaci and Cinel Senem Husseyin were asked to offer their apology, for the case to be closed and for only a small fine to be imposed. Both Koray Basdogrultmaci and Cinel Senem Husseyin refused to apologize so the trial has been set for this coming Tuesday, May 6th, at 8.30 am in Famagusta, with the accused couple being warned with the imposition of a much steeper fine or even a jail term.
Koray and Cinel have bravely reiterated their position, stating that they will refuse to pay whichever fine, will gladly go to jail, then will proceed with taking their case against Turkey as an illegitimate occupying force to the European Court of Justice.

It is clear that Cyprus Turkish Folk Music is under the influence of Anatolian folk music although it developed its local characteristics as well. Most of the folk songs were known orally since the collecting and documenting this kind of information was delayed due to the unorganized life of the Turkish Cypriots until 1974 under the impact of their political struggle for survival.
Editing of Turkish folk music has begun in 1973 and they were recorded in musical notes. The research for the discovery of the unforgotten folk songs are still going on. The Turkish Folk Music group established by the government and others by private institutions are contributing to the activities of Turkish Folk Music actively today. Has-Der which is an Association of Folk Arts is rather active in collecting and editing Cypriot Folk music and dances as well as some other cultural and anthropological aspects of Cyprus.

Fammagusta Gate is one of the town’s original three gates which leads to the Tacht El-Kala district with its many narrow alleys, small buildings and handicraft studios. Nicosia’s largest church is the Phaneromeni Church and its elegant Venetian bell tower. Next to it, one of the town’s smallest mosques and the prosaic construction of the modern Moronite Church beyond Paphos Gate that leads out of the historic centre. The port of Larnaca is considered to be the gateway to the island. A well-renovated Turkish fortress was originally built to defend the city and it was subsequently used as a prison. Close to Larnaca is a huge salt lake which, in winter, is populated by hundreds of pink flamingos. The mountain village of Lefkara is situated within the foothills of the Troodos Mountains. Narrow cobbled alleys separate the stately buildings of solid stone blocks with ornate door frames and wrought iron balconies. The Church of the Archangel Michael, located in the centre, contains various wall paintings that date back to the twelfth century. The ‘islands of the gods’ resembles a magnificent picture book, a melting pot of various influences at the intersection of both Orient and Occident. Cyprus is synonymous with myth, legend, treasures, culture and very large doses of sunshine!

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Cyprus, the most Eastern island in the Mediteranean. The country is a member of the European Union and is mainly a European culture, although the map of Cyprus is divided between Turkish occupied Northern Cyprus and Greek Cyprus.

1. The Cypriot dessert wine commandaria is recognized as the world's oldest named wine. Knight crusaders have named it in the 13th century, but it may have been made for 5,000 years. King Richard the Lionheart of England called it "the wine of kings and the king of wines" at his wedding.
2. In 2004, archaeologists found the remains of a person buried with a cat at a Neolithic archeological site in Cyprus. Dating back about 9,500 years, this is the oldest known pet cat, predating Egyptian civilization and pushing back the earliest known feline-human association significantly.
3. Since 1974 Northern Cyprus has been declared a separate state under Turkish control. The “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” is ruled by the Turks, but this title is only recognized by Turkey itself. Not only is the island of Cyprus largely divided so is the capital city of Nicosia, which lies separated by “The Green Line” akin to the manner in which Berlin was once divided into East and West Germany. It is now the only capital in the world to be divided between two ‘nations’.
4.Cyprus lies in the midst of several Middle Eastern nations—including Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. But its closest country in proximity is Turkey to the south. This unique location has set up the island of Cyprus as a neutral crossroads for many diplomatic proceedings throughout history.
5. Human presence is first recorded on the island in the 10th millennium BC. Groups of people from the Asian mainland visited the island for short periods of time in order to hunt the pygmy hippos.By the 9th millennium BC sedentary communities are settled in Cyprus.
6. Perfume originated from Cyprus. Aphrodite must have smelled pretty good if the 4000 year old traces of perfume found by archeologists in Pyrgos are anything to go by. The perfumes were discovered in alabaster bottles within an enormous underground cave. Archeologists believe they were produced on an industrial scale.
7. The pine forests of the Troodos and the Kyrenia mountains owe their existence to none other than Winston Churchill. As a junior minister in the early 1900's, he ordered a re-afforestation programme to replace the famous forests of centuries gone by, systematically eroded by centuries of felling to build ships and provide fuel for smelting.The island's forests now provide a tranquil haven from the searing heat of summer.

In 1988 he became the water-ski representative of Cyprus in foreign competitions. He was additionally one of the first cypriots to attempt barefoot, while he was also highly talented in trick-skiing. The importance of water-skiing to Mike was reflected on his business, where he became amongst the first to construct a well equipped slalom course for skiing at Konnos Bay. Despite the fact that the slalom course was removed, the sport remains dominant and is practiced professionally within the establishment.
The time consuming and energy demanding jet-ski sport was also something Mike was devoted to. Because of his business however he had to give up the sport, but maintains a top quality line of jet skis available for rent at the watersports.

Educational Visit to Arsos Village - Museum of Folk Art & Making of traditional Cypriot sweets
On November 9, 2011 the students of our school visited the traditional village of Arsos located in Limassol province. First they visited the Museum of Folk Art in the village and learned how Cypriots lived in the old days. They experienced the houses they lived in, the traditional clothing and the tools that they were using in their everyday life and work. On the second part of the visit they learned how traditional Cypriot sweets, such as "palouzes" and "soutsioukos" are made using grape juice as the basic ingredient. They tasted "palouze" and had a great time there! The study visit was part of the project theme related with knowing the local Cypriot cultural tradition and traditional food.

First they visited the Museum of Folk Art in the village and learned how Cypriots lived in the old days. The goddess of beauty and love emerged from the sea by the shores of Petra Tou Romiou. This romantic tale and the beautifully shaped rocks of the shore entices a lot of people to swim out into the sea and touch the rock of Aphrodite in the hope of eternal youth. I've never seen such an island of such female character, never breathed an air that is so dangerous and so full of sweet temptations confessed the greatest neoGreek writer Nikos Kazantzakis. Troodos Mountain lies in the middle of island. Its highest peak, the Olympus is almost 2000m high. Its gentle slopes face southwest. Many people who did not like the heat built their houses or vacation homes here instead of the seashore. The air is always pleasantly cool and balsamic and the trees offer plenty of shade. English bureaucrats also moved here with their families and lived in great colonial style houses with large terraces and took care of their official business from here. As they love to hike in the woods, we have thank them for many tourist trails and paths that lead to wonderful sights.
The purpose of the exhibition rooms, the screening room and the pamphlets in the visitors' center at the gates of the Troodos Mountains is to show visitors the things that are worthwhile seeing on the mountain. This is all the more important as people who visit the mountain in summer have no idea what it is like in winter and vice versa. The documentary film shows the changing of the seasons, the native wildlife, colorful vegetation and offers a glimpse into the traditional life of the people living in the villages on the mountain. This is also good for business because summer vacationers may become winter skiers as a result of watching this film. An interesting fact is that Rimbaud worked here as a headman on the building of the governor's palace. The then 26 year old French engineer came to Cyprus looking for adventure and found the island to be poetic. We can see mouflans, foxes, and forest animals portrayed on film and also stuffed.
There are no snakes on the island today which is allegedly due to a whole shipment of cats being brought in at one point to kill these reptiles. Whether this story is true or not, cats are preferred to dogs on the island as the latter allegedly once spread some sort of infection throughout the island. Maybe this is the reason that there are wild cats in the Troodos Mountains yet not many dogs are kept in the houses. Dogs are only becoming popular pets nowadays. In ancient times and the middle ages, the mountainsides of Cyprus used to be covered with seemingly endless rows of cedar trees. The resistant good quality hardwood was used to build boats so forests became scarce. Luckily, they weren't destroyed altogether and thanks to methodical replanting, cedar forests can be found in great numbers around the mountains. South of the 1400m Tripoli Mountain in cedar valley, there are some 4000 cedar trees all under strict protection.

During the 82 years of English dominion, many Cypriotes went to England to study and work. Today, their descendants are in many villas on the Ayia Napa seashore. Naturally, the cosmopolitan city has all the accommodation, entertainment and culinary opportunities that are expected from a tourist place such as this.

The only real monument of Ayia Napa is the 16th century monastery surrounded by a tall wall. Its foundation is surrounded a legend. Some hunters were hunting in the nearby forest and their barking dogs led them to a small cave. In it, they found a fresh water spring and a Virgin Mary icon that had been hidden there several centuries ago. The settlement soon became a place of pilgrimage and received its name after that icon. News of the spring water performing miracles also spread quickly. The wall was erected against the gothic buildings built of golden stones as protection against pirates. Its builders didn't know that the wall would not be able to protect the monks from the soon to arrive Turkish troops. We can hear Romeo and Juliet stories in several places throughout the world. The one in Ayia Napa is less tragic than most. The father of a rich Venetian girl didn't let her marry her poor lover. So she moved into the monastery and lived there for the rest of her life.
The building was left empty in the 20th century then later became the guest house of the world council of churches. There're excellent four to five star hotels in the area, some of which were built in the 70s but have been nicely renovated. In some hotels, you can have your own bubble bath with the apartment and step of the patio straight into the pool that connects the buildings. The sea itself is only 100m away but if you prefer swimming in fresh water, you can freshen up in the adventure pools of the hotel. In the evening, there are various activities with which tourists can amuse themselves. The hotels restaurants are a real culinary experience serving Greek, Mediterranean and international dishes. Boat trips depart from the charming harbor of Ayia Napa. These trips are almost compulsory on vacations spent in popular tourist destinations. Along the shore, you sail past small beach resorts, Nissi beach, Markonissos, -- and Protaras. Protaras used to be called fig tree bay after the tree standing by the tavern in the main square. It's almost unbelievable how much the area has developed.

In the evening, there are various activities with which tourists can amuse themselves. The hotels restaurants are a real culinary experience serving Greek, Mediterranean and international dishes. Boat trips depart from the charming harbor of Ayia Napa. These trips are almost compulsory on vacations spent in popular tourist destinations. Along the shore, you sail past small beach resorts, Nissi beach, Markonissos, -- and Protaras. Protaras used to be called fig tree bay after the tree standing by the tavern in the main square. It's almost unbelievable how much the area has developed.

In ancient times, Paphos was for six hundred years the capital of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus and an archaeological location that became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area inludes Palea and Kato Paphos. In the thirteenth century B.C,. the Phoenicians began to settle in the region and in the twelfth century, Mycenae times, a sanctuary was constructed, the centre of the cult of Aphrodite that was created for the worship of the goddess of love, beauty, lust and fertility. The Greek-Macedonian Ptolemäer kings who resided in Egyptian Alexandria, selected Paphos as the capital of the island and it remained so under Roman governance. Its prosperity continued until the fourth century when it was struck by a devastating earthquake. Soon, the coast became marshy and the inhabitants of the Ottoman period moved to the more elevated terrain of the hinterland and built the town of Ktima. Paphos enjoys an exceptional place in history and contains the monuments and artifacts from prehistoric and Roman times right up to the Middle Ages. The rich heritage of an ancient world!
