Ross Manning is an emerging artist who works with the most basic elements of some of the most sophisticated technology today. His Spectra series is an ongoing project exploring the aesthetic potential of the additive colour model. Additive colour mixing, and specifically the RGB (red, green, blue) colour model, is at the centre of digital image reproduction, employed in all camera, screen and projection based technologies, as well as film-based colour photography. When coloured light beams, or spectra, of different wavelengths are overlayed, the cumulative wavelength produces a new colour.
For this installation Manning has created a kinetic light sculpture that doubles as an exceptionally reductive take on video installation art. Suspended from the ceiling, a rotating structure of coloured fluorescent tubes driven by basic household rotary cooling fans, projects coloured geometric shapes and washes. Manning's analogue assemblages are conceptual yet playful and stimulating.

Today's INNERview - "James Powderly"
James Powderly is a new media artist famed for his development of the EyeWriter.
He began the EyeWriter project to help Tony Quan, a graffiti artist with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease, the ability to tag again. He created the device with a budget of just $50, and shared his accomplishment with the world by making the software and production manual open-source.
Powderly grew up in Tennessee, United States. His natural musical talent inspired him to study composition, and the difficulty of gathering players for his works led him to begin making music with computers. This became a gateway for Powderly's further studies into computer programming and science.
Powderly went on to create projects that combined art and science for communicative purposes including "laser tag" and "LED Throwies," and worked with NASA to design robots for the Mars Rover.
He says that he finds the spark for new ideas in the works of old artists, and that Cezanne is delicious while Rembrandt is less than palatable. How does he see, evaluate, and produce art? Find out on this week's "The INNERview."

그는 루게릭 병에 걸려 창작활동을 할 수 없게 된 예술가 토니콴에게 그래피티 아티스트의 이름을 다시 되찾아주기 위한 아이-라이터 프로젝트를 시작했다. 단돈 50달러로 개발에 성공했고, 동시에 제작 매뉴얼과 소프트웨어를 모두 일반에 공개해 세상에 희망의 메시지를 전했다.
미 남부 테네시에서 성장한 그는 어려서 음악에 재능이 있어 작곡법을 전공했지만 연습 때마다 여러 악기 연주자들을 한데 모으기가 힘들어 컴퓨터로 음악을 만들기 시작했다. 이것이 컴퓨터 프로그래밍&과학에 눈뜨고 입문하게 된 계기가 됐다
이후 파우더리는 예술과 기술을 접목시킨 '레이저 테그' ,'LED Throwies'등 도시 커뮤니케이션에 새로운 붉을 발혔고 NASA와 함께 행성을 탐지하는 로봇을 만들기도 했다.

Collaborating with specialists across nanotechnology, microelectronics, fashion and manufacturing, Leah Heiss uses advanced technologies to explore the connection between art, design and science. Heiss utilises her background in design to integrate nano-engineered materials with personalised items such as clothing, jewellery and small-scale interactive devices to explore the complex relationship between person and artefact. For Heiss, the allure of using advanced technologies is not the technology itself, rather the communication and emotional engagement engendered by its artistic application.
Polarity 2012 is the latest iteration of the 'Polarise' series begun by Heiss in 2008-09. Drawing on ideas of fragility, mutability and intimacy, this captivating installation places collections of customised glass vessels on a table, each filled with a nano-engineered solution. A layer of black magnetic fluid lies at the base of each vessel, pulsing to the presence of a concealed magnetic field. Both delicate and compelling, Polarity invites the viewer to engage in the magic of the unseen, forming an empathic relationship to these seemingly vulnerable animated forms.

New media art
New media art is a genre that encompasses artworks created with new media technologies, including digital art, computer graphics, computer animation, virtual art, Internet art, interactive art, video games, computer robotics, 3D printing, cyborg art and art as biotechnology. The term differentiates itself by its resulting cultural objects and social events, which can be seen in opposition to those deriving from old visual arts (i.e. traditional painting, sculpture, etc.). This concern with medium is a key feature of much contemporary art and indeed many art schools and major Universities now offer majors in "New Genres" or "New Media" and a growing number of graduate programs have emerged internationally. New Media Art often involves interaction between artist and observer or between observers and the artwork, which responds to them. Yet, as several theorists and curators have noted, such forms of interaction, social exchange, participation, and transformation do not distinguish new media art but rather serve as a common ground that has parallels in other strands of contemporary art practice. Such insights emphasize the forms of cultural practice that arise concurrently with emerging technological platforms, and question the focus on technological media, per se.

For this installation Manning has created a kinetic light sculpture that doubles as an exceptionally reductive take on video installation art. Suspended from the ceiling, a rotating structure of coloured fluorescent tubes driven by basic household rotary cooling fans, projects coloured geometric shapes and washes. Manning's analogue assemblages are conceptual yet playful and stimulating.

Ross Manning is an emerging artist who works with the most basic elements of some of the most sophisticated technology today. His Spectra series is an ongoing project exploring the aesthetic potential of the additive colour model. Additive colour mixing, and specifically the RGB (red, green, blue) colour model, is at the centre of digital image reproduction, employed in all camera, screen and projection based technologies, as well as film-based colour photography. James Powderly is a new media artist famed for his development of the EyeWriter.
He began the EyeWriter project to help Tony Quan, a graffiti artist with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease, the ability to tag again. He created the device with a budget of just $50, and shared his accomplishment with the world by making the software and production manual open-source.
Powderly grew up in Tennessee, United States. His natural musical talent inspired him to study composition, and the difficulty of gathering players for his works led him to begin making music with computers. This became a gateway for Powderly's further studies into computer programming and science.
Powderly went on to create projects that combined art and science for communicative purposes including "laser tag" and "LED Throwies," and worked with NASA to design robots for the Mars Rover.
He says that he finds the spark for new ideas in the works of old artists, and that Cezanne is delicious while Rembrandt is less than palatable. How does he see, evaluate, and produce art? Find out on this week's "The INNERview."

Collaborating with specialists across nanotechnology, microelectronics, fashion and manufacturing, Leah Heiss uses advanced technologies to explore the connection between art, design and science. Heiss utilises her background in design to integrate nano-engineered materials with personalised items such as clothing, jewellery and small-scale interactive devices to explore the complex relationship between person and artefact. For Heiss, the allure of using advanced technologies is not the technology itself, rather the communication and emotional engagement engendered by its artistic application.
Polarity 2012 is the latest iteration of the 'Polarise' series begun by Heiss in 2008-09. Drawing on ideas of fragility, mutability and intimacy, this captivating installation places collections of customised glass vessels on a table, each filled with a nano-engineered solution. A layer of black magnetic fluid lies at the base of each vessel, pulsing to the presence of a concealed magnetic field. Both delicate and compelling, Polarity invites the viewer to engage in the magic of the unseen, forming an empathic relationship to these seemingly vulnerable animated forms.

Artists and cultural organizations have long been advocates for freedom of expression, arguing “the requirement that works of film, video, and other media arts be approved before the public is allowed access to them can rarely, if ever, be justified.” (Excerpt from the Independent Media Arts Alliance statement of principle against censorship) This roundtable looks at the recent instance of the film Of the North which raised many questions about cultural representation, and the ethics around production and dissemination of a work that perpetuates negative stereotypes of a marginalized people.
