Turn an instant fire into a raging volcano in minutes ! You can see it is not necessary, or advisable, to accelerate ignition by covering the front with newspaper; a crude, quick and dirty, dangerous procedure; all the more so on a windy day.
*** UPDATE - Dec 17, 2012 ***: First fire lit since making the video; took a fraction of the time, with less kindling, paper sticks etc; quite a lot more unburnt cinders to get it going; didn't bother placing initial coal individually - just shovelled it in - relocated those bits blocking the central area.
The main reason for this video is to demonstrate a method where you KNOW the fire will go and not just HOPE it will.
****** UPDATE - March 4, 2013 *******: If you have 4 short logs then you can construct the supporting "nest" or "bower" using them; nice and quick and works just as well.
****** UPDATE - April 9, 2013 ******: since I have a good stock of the right sized logs am relying on above with very quick results; the initial logs make placing the paper sticks and kindling very stable; fire starts so quickly that you have to avoid loading the kindling with too much coal as it tends to collapse readily.

McDonald Hobley
McDonald Hobley, born Dennys Jack Valentine McDonald-Hobley, (9 June 1917,Stanley, Falkland Islands – 30 July 1987) was one of the first BBC Television continuity announcers, appearing from 1946 to 1956.
Childhood and early career
Hobley (pronounced to rhyme with 'nobly') was the son of Charles McDonald Hobley, the naval chaplain at the cathedral in Stanley and his wife Gladys, née Blanchard. He was christened Dennys Jack Valentine McDonald-Hobley and attended Brighton College, a public school, from 1931–36. He began his acting career in repertory theatre, under the stage names Val Blanchard and Robert Blanchard, using his mother's maiden name, and toured before the Second World War in J. B. Priestley's Time and the Conways.
War service
During the Second World War he served with the Royal Artillery. He was involved in an ultimately abandoned plot to abduct Adolf Hitler and bring him to Britain. He also served in Ceylon with the British Forces Broadcasting Service.
Post-war
After being demobbed, he was selected as an announcer for the post-war revival of BBC Television.

Turn an instant fire into a raging volcano in minutes ! You can see it is not necessary, or advisable, to accelerate ignition by covering the front with newspaper; a crude, quick and dirty, dangerous procedure; all the more so on a windy day.
*** UPDATE - Dec 17, 2012 ***: First fire lit since making the video; took a fraction of the time, with less kindling, paper sticks etc; quite a lot more unburnt cinders to get it going; didn't bother placing initial coal individually - just shovelled it in - relocated those bits blocking the central area.
The main reason for this video is to demonstrate a method where you KNOW the fire will go and not just HOPE it will.
****** UPDATE - March 4, 2013 *******: If you have 4 short logs then you can construct the supporting "nest" or "bower" using them; nice and quick and works just as well.
****** UPDATE - April 9, 2013 ******: since I have a good stock of the right sized logs am relying on above with very quick results; the initial logs make placing the paper sticks and kindling very stable; fire starts so quickly that you have to avoid loading the kindling with too much coal as it tends to collapse readily.

McDonald Hobley
McDonald Hobley, born Dennys Jack Valentine McDonald-Hobley, (9 June 1917,Stanley, Falkland Islands – 30 July 1987) was one of the first BBC Television continuity announcers, appearing from 1946 to 1956.
Childhood and early career
Hobley (pronounced to rhyme with 'nobly') was the son of Charles McDonald Hobley, the naval chaplain at the cathedral in Stanley and his wife Gladys, née Blanchard. He was christened Dennys Jack Valentine McDonald-Hobley and attended Brighton College, a public school, from 1931–36. He began his acting career in repertory theatre, under the stage names Val Blanchard and Robert Blanchard, using his mother's maiden name, and toured before the Second World War in J. B. Priestley's Time and the Conways.
War service
During the Second World War he served with the Royal Artillery. He was involved in an ultimately abandoned plot to abduct Adolf Hitler and bring him to Britain. He also served in Ceylon with the British Forces Broadcasting Service.
Post-war
After being demobbed, he was selected as an announcer for the post-war revival of BBC Television.
