Ancient Panathenaia
Panathenaia was an ancient Greek feast of Athens dedicated to the goddess Athena, which took place in the city every four years.
For the citizens of Athens, Panathenaea was the most important event of the year, but it was not considered as important as that of the Olympic Games.
It was divided into the Minor and the Great Panathenaea.

It was used for various purposes in the 20th century and was once again used an Olympic venue in 2004. It is the finishing point for the annual Athens Classic Marathon. It is also the last venue in Greece from where the Olympic flame handover ceremony to the host nation takes place.

Original Olympic Games were founded in 776 BC in Ancient Greece. They were held in honor of the king of Gods, Zeus. But it was also a way to celebrate the power of the human body. The Games were stopped in 393 AD. Romans, who invaded Greece, found the games contradicting to Christianity. It took more than 1500 years to revive the games. In the 19th century, different European countries held sports competitions. They were based on the Olympic Games, but these ones were local. Baron Pierre de Coubertin wanted to make them multinational. The idea was to unite people by sports competitions. It was a chance for nations to come together and overcome conflicts. The International Olympic Committee first met in 1894. They chose Athens to be the site of the first Olympics. It was a symbol of respect to the country which founded the Games. Greece government wanted the Olympics to be held in their country permanently. But the Committee didn’t approve it – the host countries had to be different. Greece was a poor country at that time. And the revival of the Games made the nation excited. The Olympics started on 6th April 1896. The opening ceremony was held on the rebuilt Panathenaic Stadium. In Ancient Greece, the games took place at the same stadium. 240 athletes from 14 countries participated in the competition. It wasn’t as a multinational and mass event as it is today. There were also other differences. Only men could participate in the Games - the same rule was in Ancient Greece. The winners were rewarded with silver medals, not gold ones. The second place got a bronze medal, and for the third place, there was no reward at all. There wasn’t also the traditional lighting of the Olympic flame. The modern symbol of the Olympics - the interlocking rings - was designed only in 1912. From 1896, the Olympics were held every four years. Winter Olympics were first conducted in 1924.
