Sarah Ann McLachlan, OC, OBC (born January 28, 1968) is a Canadian musician, singer, songwriter, and pianist. Known for her emotional ballads and mezzo-soprano vocal range, as of 2009, she has sold over 40 million albums worldwide. McLachlan's best-selling album to date is Surfacing, for which she won two Grammy Awards (out of four nominations) and four Juno Awards. In addition to her personal artistic efforts, she founded the Lilith Fair tour, which showcased female musicians on an unprecedented scale. The Lilith Fair concert tours took place from 1997 to 1999, and resumed in the summer of 2010. On May 6, 2014, she released her first album of original music in four years, titled Shine On.
Sarah McLachlan was born on January 28, 1968, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and adopted. Her biological father is Paddy Maiorana and her biological mother was Tracey Robertson. Her parents have Scottish ancestry. As a child, she took voice lessons, along with studies in classical piano and guitar. When she was 17 years old and still a student at Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax, she fronted a short-lived rock band called The October Game. One of the band's songs, "Grind," credited as a group composition, can be found on the independent Flamingo Records release Out of the Fog and the CD Out of the Fog Too. It has yet to be released elsewhere. Her high school yearbook predicted that she was "destined to become a famous rock star."
Glenn Herbert Gould (25 September 1932 – 4 October 1982) was a Canadian pianist who became one of the best-known and most celebrated classical pianists of the 20th century. He was particularly renowned as an interpreter of the keyboard music of Johann Sebastian Bach. His playing was distinguished by remarkable technical proficiency and capacity to articulate the polyphonic texture of Bach's music.
After his adolescence, Gould rejected most of the standard Romantic piano literature including Liszt, Schumann, and Chopin. Although his recordings were dominated by Bach, Gould's repertoire was diverse, including works by Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Brahms, pre-Baroque composers such as Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Orlando Gibbons and William Byrd, and such 20th-century composers as Paul Hindemith, Arnold Schoenberg and Richard Strauss. Gould was well known for various eccentricities, from his unorthodox musical interpretations and mannerisms at the keyboard to aspects of his lifestyle and personal behaviour. He stopped giving concerts at the age of 31 to concentrate on studio recording and other projects. Gould was the first pianist to record any of Liszt's piano transcriptions of Beethoven's symphonies (beginning with the Fifth Symphony, in 1967).

While the global political and social situation is getting more and more explosive, emancipatory struggles are more and more hampered by ideological prejudices. This is why some ruthless clarifications are necessary. introduction by Costas Douzinas Event Date: march 23 2011
The Idea of North's performance is a seamless harmony. They give a musical lesson in what a cappella really means, and split up their parts to demonstrate how they come together. The audience warms up their own vocal cords, as the four-piece coaches them through a three part harmony sung by a choir of hundreds, that really is so lovely. The Idea of North are an ARIA award winning a cappella group. Comprised of Sally Cameron, Naomi Crellin, Nick Begbie and Andrew Piper, they are Australia's longest-standing and most awarded contemporary a cappella group in history. The Idea of North have performed with some of Australia's greatest jazz musicians, and sold out shows on home soil and around the world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently or...

This is quite an interesting look at Northern Canada and the people who visit/inhabit, and just as often "fall in love with" it. I for one, cannot see myself even going! But it is a very intimate look into the human psyche and/or condition. - AH
The idea of India is stronger than an Indian. The idea of Pakistan is weaker than a Pakistani. Hence, every time an Indian steps out of the path its founding fathers have envisioned, the power of this idea slowly heals him back to it. On the other hand, the weak idea of Pakistan is lost the day Pakistan was created. Today, Jinnah's idea is misunderstood, misinterpreted, abused and twisted out of context by various Pakistani sections to serve their respective political interests. The idea of Pakistan could not hold the religious, sectarian and linguistic passions of a Pakistani. Hence the liberation of Bangladesh. MJ Akbar explains why the idea of India is a brave idea, especially in the context of 1947 and the events surrounding it. A secular, liberal, pluralistic, democratic India with ...

I always thought those theme park fireflies were made out of thin wire and grain of wheat lamps so I decided to do a quick build to prove out the idea. To make it interesting I tried to do it quickly. Music: Aaron Copland - Hoe-Down [From the Rodeo]

Dr. Yogendra Yadav discussed the ‘idea’ one of being an Indian beyond territorial boundaries. He discussed the significance of certain attributes that help define the identities of the people of India, irrespective of their geographical location. Consequentially, not everyone living in India might be an Indian, by this definition. He discussed the three D’s to which India has contributed substantially and uniquely. The three D’s are: Democracy, Diversity, and Development. Being a nation of a widely diverse population with complicated hierarchal structures, India has redefined these terms for itself. Unlike the rest of the world, India has attempted to reach the last person, and has tied to measure the success of the country in term of improvement in the living conditions of the poorest. Ra...

Introduction to Theory of Literature (ENGL 300) In this lecture, Professor Paul Fry explores the origins of formalist literary criticism. Considerable attention is paid to the rise and subsequent popularity of the New Critics and their preferred site of literary exploration, the "poem." The idea of autonomous art is explored in the writings of, among others, Kant, Coleridge, and Wilde. Using the work of Wimsatt and Beardsley, the lecture concludes with an examination of acceptable categories of evidence in New Criticism. 00:00 - Chapter 1. In between awake and sleep
Where all our unknown thoughts are caught
I jerk and twitch, a leaping fish
Finds open water, overboard
It swims back beyond comprehension
Free of reason, weight or wish
While my mind's line snaps straight with tension
Struggling with another fish
It keeps you warm, you keep it quiet
You carry it like cups of tea
You sleep on it, but still don't buy it
Carry it like a disease
Quite enough for you to hear, a child born to the
unprepared
You tell yourself you've no idea
But it is there, it's there
A to B, to A to bed
Wake up at A
Each day's the same
You thought you'd thought it all before
Now something's gnawing at your brain
Quite enough for you to hear, a child born to the
unprepared
You tell yourself you've no idea
