It is a romantic ruin, with enough buildings still standing to present a very good idea of how wonderful this complex was during its glory days in the 15th-17th centuries. Get off at the "Schloss" castle station, go through the arched gateway and walk left for the grand vista looking down on the town below. You can see how the castle is built on steep cliffs to prevent invasion from the front, with high walls and a dry moat protecting the rear.
As you stand in the courtyard surrounded by the castle, your eyes will be drawn to the impressive Renaissance façade of the Friedrich Building, dripping with sculptural and decorative architectural details. Built from 1601-07 as the living quarters for the Duke of Bavaria, it is embellished with 16 elegant statues depicting emperors and kings of the Wittelsbach dynasty, clad in stone armor befitting their noble warrior status.

As you emerge into the castle courtyard, the next stop is the Castle Garden. Don't leave without a good stroll through these vast green terraces, which have quite a history of their own.
It is worth walking to the far end of the Castle Garden to get another excellent view of the town, from a different angle than you have seen previously. Several lovely fountains, are scattered through the gardens, especially at the back edge where a voluptuous river god lounges in a grotto.

A visit to beautiful Heidelberg, Germany would be incomplete without a visit to the romantic ruin that is known as Schloss Heidelberg (Heidelberg Castle). Situated on a hill, it overlooks the old section of Heidelberg and dominates the view from any angle.
The castle has been recorded as far back as 1214 and undergone major changes, but also having been destroyed several times over the years. By the year 1650, the current expanded version of the castle had been established, but also destroyed by fire on several occasions. In the late 1700, the castle ceased to function as a residence and was abandoned. It fell into neglect and disrepair until writers and painters began to see the beauty in the starkness of the ruins and began to extol its virtues, attracting more and more visitors to see for themselves. Heidelberg realized what a jewel this was and began to restore sections of it that were still salvagable. Mark Twain told of the castle in his book "A Tramp Abroad" which detailed his visit to Heidelberg, a city that became one of his all-time favorites.

My river cruise, the Viking Kvasir, stopped for the day in Heidelberg, so I got a quick look at this historic city. We checked out the famous Heidelberg Castle, ate our way through the Christmas market, shopped in Christmas stores and had a delicious pub lunch in a brauhaus.

Heidelberg German is a town situated on the River Neckar in south-west Germany. The fifth-largest town in the State of Baden-Württemberg after Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Mannheim and Freiburg im Breisgau, Heidelberg is part of the densely populated Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region. In 2011, over 149,000 people lived in the city.
A former residence of the Electorate of the Palatinate, Heidelberg is the location of Heidelberg University, well known far beyond Germany's borders. Heidelberg is a popular tourist destination due to its romantic and picturesque cityscape, including Heidelberg Castle and the baroque style Old Town.
Heidelberg is in the Rhine Rift Valley, on the left bank of the lower part of the River Neckar in a steep valley in the Odenwald. It is bordered by the Königsstuhl (568 m) and the Gaisberg (375 m) mountains. The River Neckar here flows in an east-west direction. On the right bank of the river, the Heiligenberg mountain rises to a height of (445 m). The River Neckar flows into the River Rhine approximately 22 kilometres north-west in Mannheim. Villages incorporated during the 20th century stretch from the Neckar Valley along the Bergstraße, a road running through the Odenwald hills.
Heidelberg is on European walking route E1 (Sweden-Umbria).

Heidelberg Castle
Heidelberg Castle (German: Heidelberger Schloss) is a famous ruin in Germany and landmark of Heidelberg. The castle ruins are among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps.
The castle has only been partially rebuilt since its demolition in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is located 80 metres (260 ft) up the northern part of the Königstuhl hillside, and thereby dominates the view of the old downtown. It is served by an intermediate station on the Heidelberger Bergbahn funicular railway that runs from Heidelberg's Kornmarkt to the summit of the Königstuhl.
The earliest castle structure was built before 1214 and later expanded into two castles circa 1294; however, in 1537, a lightning-bolt destroyed the upper castle. The present structures had been expanded by 1650, before damage by later wars and fires. In 1764, another lightning-bolt caused a fire which destroyed some rebuilt sections.

Early history
Heidelberg was first mentioned in 1196 as "Heidelberch". In 1155 Conrad of Hohenstaufen was made the Count Palatine by his half-brother Frederick Barbarossa, and the region became known as the Electorate of the Palatinate. The claim that Conrad's main residence was on the Schlossberg (Castle Hill), known as the Jettenbühl, cannot be substantiated. The name "Jettenbühl" comes from the soothsayer Jetta, who was said to have lived there. She is also associated with Wolfsbrunnen (Wolf's Spring) and the Heidenloch (Heathens' Well). The first mention of a castle in Heidelberg (Latin: "castrum in Heidelberg cum burgo ipsius castri") is in 1214, when Louis I, Duke of Bavaria of the House of Wittelsbach received it from Hohenstaufen Emperor Friedrich II. The last mention of a single castle is in 1294. In another document from 1303, two castles are mentioned for the first time:

You can see how the castle is built on steep cliffs to prevent invasion from the front, with high walls and a dry moat protecting the rear.
As you stand in the courtyard surrounded by the castle, your eyes will be drawn to the impressive Renaissance façade of the Friedrich Building, dripping with sculptural and decorative architectural details. Built from 1601-07 as the living quarters for the Duke of Bavaria, it is embellished with 16 elegant statues depicting emperors and kings of the Wittelsbach dynasty, clad in stone armor befitting their noble warrior status.

A visit to beautiful Heidelberg, Germany would be incomplete without a visit to the romantic ruin that is known as Schloss Heidelberg (Heidelberg Castle). Situated on a hill, it overlooks the old section of Heidelberg and dominates the view from any angle.
The castle has been recorded as far back as 1214 and undergone major changes, but also having been destroyed several times over the years. By the year 1650, the current expanded version of the castle had been established, but also destroyed by fire on several occasions. In the late 1700, the castle ceased to function as a residence and was abandoned. It fell into neglect and disrepair until writers and painters began to see the beauty in the starkness of the ruins and began to extol its virtues, attracting more and more visitors to see for themselves. Heidelberg realized what a jewel this was and began to restore sections of it that were still salvagable. Mark Twain told of the castle in his book "A Tramp Abroad" which detailed his visit to Heidelberg, a city that became one of his all-time favorites.

On the right bank of the river, the Heiligenberg mountain rises to a height of (445 m). The River Neckar flows into the River Rhine approximately 22 kilometres north-west in Mannheim. Villages incorporated during the 20th century stretch from the Neckar Valley along the Bergstraße, a road running through the Odenwald hills.

Heidelberg is a city in south-west Germany. The fifth-largest city in the State of Baden-Württemberg, Heidelberg lies on the River Neckar in a steep valley in the Odenwald.
A former residence of the Electorate of the Palatinate, Heidelberg is the location of Heidelberg University, well known far beyond Germany's borders. Heidelberg is a popular tourist destination due to its romantic and picturesque cityscape, including Heidelberg Castle and the baroque style Old Town.
The old town, on the south bank of the Neckar, is long and narrow. It is dominated by the ruins of Heidelberg Castle, 80 metres above the Neckar on the steep wooded slopes of the Königstuhl hill. The castle ruins are among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps.
It is no secret that Heidelberg is a jewel among German travel destinations. It is located in the Neckar river valley right where the legend-rich Odenwald opens up towards the plains of the Rhine Valley. Heidelberg is home to the oldest university in Germany (established 1386). Generally speaking, Heidelberg is an academic city with a long and rich history and is similar in many ways to cities such as Cambridge or Oxford in England.
During World War II, the city was almost completely spared allied bombings which destroyed many of Germany's larger inner cities. As a result, Heidelberg has retained its baroque charm of narrow streets, picturesque houses and of course the world-famous Castle.
Over the years, Heidelberg has attracted numerous artists, intellectuals and academics from all over Europe and has sometimes been referred to as Germany's unofficial intellectual capital. With hundreds of thousands of tourists flocking to the city annually, Heidelberg is truly a culturally diverse and international destination, despite its small size.

The castle has only been partially rebuilt since its demolition in the 17th and 18th centuries. Go up two screens and enter the middle door, then take the left door to get to the Wind Spear Disc. This allows you to perform the Air Slash skill. Now, go out ...
Go up two screens and enter the middle door, then take the left door to get to the Wind Spear Disc. This allows you to perform the Air Slash skill. Now, go out of this room, then head out of this room as well. Go right and enter the door to get to a Pine Gel and Reflex. Light up the two torches you find, and a secret door will open, and now the fun will begin!
Go right, and you will find yourself in a big room. You will see a bunch of lit torches, but a couple of them are not lit. Light up the ones that aren't lit, and then go to the upper right corner of the room. Enter through the door to get the Aquamarine, then exit this room and proceed through the middle door. In this room, go up, and move the statue with the lighted orb in front of the other statue, and the curtain to the north will open, so go through the opening.
Now, you will be in a mechanical room full of gears and chains. Move to the left, grabbing a Life Bottle, then move up along the chain. Hit the switch, then go down, and climb up the chain to the right. Go right, and go across the moving platform to the other side. Climb up the chain, then climb up the right chain and hit the switch. Leave behind a party member, then go all the way back down to the lowest level of this room, and go all the way right. Use the elevator to proceed, and then climb up the chain. Step on the platform, face north, and use the Sorcerer's Ring to melt the frozen pulley.
Now, use the platform to go left, and get the Hunter's Bow. Go down the chain to pick up your character, then go up, right, across the platform, up, left, up, and through the door. Go through the next door, as well, then light up every torch you find in this room. The door in the left has a thawed chain, so use the S Ring to melt it, then go through the door on the right and turn the wheel. Go back two rooms now, and go through the lower left hand corner's door. Use the save point, and turn the wheel. Now, go back into the main hall with the numerous doors and head through the middle door. Keep going up the stairs until you get to Lydon.

No two buildings are exactly alike and yet they all blend seamlessly in a simple Baroque style. While the exteriors may be centuries old, they are maintained spotlessly with fresh paint and modern fixtures. The shop interiors are totally contemporary, if not futuristic, with all the latest goods on sale. Numerous restaurants will delight you with their gourmet fare and tasty beer.
We then visit the most important single sight in Heidelberg -- the magnificent castle on the hill. It is a romantic ruin, with enough buildings still standing to present a very good idea of how wonderful this complex was during its glory days in the 15th-17th centuries. The extreme mix of destruction and beauty conjures up the turbulent past of this strategic fortification, with crumbling walls and towers standing next to a complete palace containing a fully-restored interior. And while here, you get a fantastic view looking down on the Old Town -- more than just beautiful, this is one of the great vistas of Europe, and the castle itself ranks in a lofty league with those of Salzburg or Edinburgh.
