Black Iraqis in the southern province of Basra are complaining of discrimination, saying they are not fairly represented in the state.
African Iraqis have lived in the country for centuries and now number more than one million.
Many of them are descendants of African slaves brought to Iraq. Many Iraqis still refer to them by their ancestral name, abeed - meaning slaves.

This 48-year-old decided to leave his native Baghdad to develop his import-export business in China. UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie recently visited internally displaced Iraqis living in an informal settlement and a formal camp at Khanke, near Dohuk. There, she heard dramatic stories of escape from the more than 20,000 Yazidis who fled Sinjar and surrounding areas last August.
Since Ms Jolie's last visit to Iraq in September 2012, the scale and gravity of the humanitarian situation have increased dramatically, as the conflicts in Syria and Iraq intensify and become intertwined.
"It is shocking to see how the humanitarian situation in Iraq has deteriorated since my last visit. On top of large numbers of Syrian refugees, two million Iraqis were displaced by violence in 2014 alone. Many of these innocent people have been uprooted multiple times as they seek safety amidst shifting frontlines."

Two years ago, Ari, an ethnic Kurd, was practicing Taekwondo when he came across videos of David Bell, the founder of Parkour, also known as free-running. As he saw the artist running, climbing, swinging, and vaulting, Ari knew immediately that he had been doing the wrong sport all along.
“I realised Taekwondo is only about fighting”, says the 22-year-old. “But I don’t want to fight. I want to feel far from war.”
Today, about 40 boys meet several times a week. Every Friday afternoon, they practice in the ancient citadel in the centre of Kirkuk.
Ari’s group of kids is as diverse as the ruins of the citadel. They come from the different communities that live in Kirkuk: Kurds, Turkmen, Arabs, and Christians. Over time, they have learned each other’s languages and become friends.
“I feel like I brought them together,” says Ari.

The Iraqi people (Arabic: العراقيون ʿIrāqīyūn, Kurdish: گهلی عیراق Îraqîyan, Aramaic: ܥܡܐ ܥܝܪܩܝܐ ʿIrāqāyā, Turkish: Iraklılar) are the citizens of the modern country of Iraq.
Arabs have been the majority in Mesopotamia since the Sassanid Empire (224-637 AD).Arabic was spoken by the majority in the Iraqi Kingdom of Araba in the 1st and 2nd centuries, and by Arabs in Al-Hirah from the 3rd century.Arabs were common in Mesopotamia at the time of the Seleucids (3rd century BC). The first Arab kingdom outside of Arabia was established in Iraq's Al-Hirah in the 3rd century. Arabic was a minority language in northern Iraq in the 8th century BC, from the 8th century following the Muslim conquest of Persia it became the dominant language of Iraqi Muslims, due to Arabic being the language of the Qur'an and the Caliphate.
Kurdish Iraqi citizens live in the mountainous Zagros region of northeast Iraq to the east of the upper Tigris. Modern genetic studies indicate that Iraqi Arabs and Kurds are distantly related. Arabic and Kurdish are Iraq's national languages.

Ali M. Fadhil Ahmed Al Rubaye moved four years ago with his wife Adraa and his son and daughter to the small commercial town of Yiwu, on the east coast of China (Zhejiang province). This 48-year-old decided to leave his native Baghdad to develop his import-export business in China. Far from the insecurity of his home country, he and his family have built an "Iraqi" lifestyle for themselves in a town which is home to one of the largest expatriate Muslim communities in China.

UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie recently visited internally displaced Iraqis living in an informal settlement and a formal camp at Khanke, near Dohuk. There, she heard dramatic stories of escape from the more than 20,000 Yazidis who fled Sinjar and surrounding areas last August.
Since Ms Jolie's last visit to Iraq in September 2012, the scale and gravity of the humanitarian situation have increased dramatically, as the conflicts in Syria and Iraq intensify and become intertwined.
"It is shocking to see how the humanitarian situation in Iraq has deteriorated since my last visit. On top of large numbers of Syrian refugees, two million Iraqis were displaced by violence in 2014 alone. Many of these innocent people have been uprooted multiple times as they seek safety amidst shifting frontlines."

Two years ago, Ari, an ethnic Kurd, was practicing Taekwondo when he came across videos of David Bell, the founder of Parkour, also known as free-running. As he saw the artist running, climbing, swinging, and vaulting, Ari knew immediately that he had been doing the wrong sport all along.
“I realised Taekwondo is only about fighting”, says the 22-year-old. “But I don’t want to fight. I want to feel far from war.”
Today, about 40 boys meet several times a week. Every Friday afternoon, they practice in the ancient citadel in the centre of Kirkuk.
Ari’s group of kids is as diverse as the ruins of the citadel. They come from the different communities that live in Kirkuk: Kurds, Turkmen, Arabs, and Christians. Over time, they have learned each other’s languages and become friends.
“I feel like I brought them together,” says Ari.

Comprising members of many different tribes and tribal confederations, such as the Āl Bū Muḥammad, Ferayghāt, Shaghanbah and Banī Lām, the Maʻdān had developed a unique culture centered on the marshes' natural resources. Many of the marshes' inhabitants were displaced when the wetlands were drained during and after the 1991 uprisings in Iraq.

With the rhythmic beating of the drum, the march of Shia Muslims began in Kirkuk, Iraq to celebrate Ashura on Wednesday. Men of all ages, dressed in black, commemorated the martyrdom of Imam Hussein - a grandson of the Prophet Mohammed who was killed during the battle of Karbala in the 7th century. One group of men beat their chests with their fists, and another group flagellated themselves with chains. With the rhythmic beating of the drum, the march of Shia Muslims began in Kirkuk, Iraq to celebrate Ashura on Wednesday.
Men of all ages, dressed in black, commemorated the martyrdom of Imam Hussein - a grandson of the Prophet Mohammed who was killed during the battle of Karbala in the 7th century.
One group of men beat their chests with their fists, and another group flagellated themselves with chains. This was a ritual to mourn Imam Hussein's death as they carried flags with his picture and remembered his suffering.
The event comes during a time while Iraq is facing other battles, many with ISIS. The drummer of this parade emphasized that all he wanted was a secure united country. He said, "I want the country to become safe and for good things to happen. There is no difference between our brothers, Shiite, Sunni, Christian, there is no difference between us at all. We are all brothers."
Meanwhile, thousands of Iraqis are struggling to survive in refugee camps as they flee ISIS. A camp in Dibaga houses many refugees with men sleeping on mattresses in mosques, while women and children are sleeping in hallways of schools.
An Iraqi refugee said, "We want to go back to our houses and send our children back to school. We left our houses behind, everything is gone, destroyed. I mean why? We are not sinful, what is our sin to deserve this, we haven't done anything, we are innocent people."
Many of the voices in the camp echoed the wish for safety and the return to normal life, but with the long-awaited Mosul offensive to retake the city from ISIL ahead, it is very likely that only more civilians in Iraq are soon to become refugees.
