A-League: Mark Birighitti saves Newcastle blushes in draw with Adelaide

Newcastle A class display from Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti ensured Newcastle kept in-form Adelaide to a scoreless draw at Hunter Stadium on Friday night.

The Reds had the better chances in front of 7332 fans in the round 11 match but Birighitti, who has reportedly attracted interest from English Premier League clubs, proved the hero.

Jets, United share points

Newcastle Jets and Adelaide United play out a scoreless draw at Hunter Stadium on Friday night.

He smothered shots from Dylan McGowan (17th minute), James Jeggo (61st) and Bruce Djite (82nd). He also dived to tip a Djite strike around the post in the 90th minute.

It capped a frustrating night for Adelaide, who twice hit the woodwork with Marcelo Carrusca free-kicks.

Newcastle's best chance came in the 39th minute when Mateo Poljak's header off a Milos Trifunovic cross thundered into the post.

Jets Jason Hoffman and Ben Kantarovski picked up their fifth yellow cards of the season and will miss the next round suspended.

The draw moves Newcastle to 13 points and Adelaide to 10.

Jets coach Scott Miller said Birighitti had been outstanding all year and he was focused on the team's collective response to last week's 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Melbourne City.

"We worked hard, very hard this week and I must commend the players on their focus this week," Miller said.

"It was a real determination to improve on last week's performance against Melbourne City, so I must commend the players for their attitude on that.

"In terms of reducing their clear opportunities and not conceding late, it was a stance, and the clean sheet was significant to that degree, because a 4-0 hit will affect the biggest teams in the world.

"To show that discipline and respect for their teammates in their work ethic was great."

Adelaide coach Guillermo Amor was frustrated with the result, which was the second scoreless draw of the season against Newcastle.

"The result was not good for us," Amor said.

"We came here for a win, we played to win and we deserved to win.

"In both games we deserved the wins.

"If it was boxing, we would be the winner on points but this is football."
