Hollywood celebrity looks forward to religion being treated like racism

Chris O’Dowd, Hollywood celebrity and ‘comedian’ has told GQ magazine that as an atheist he looks forward to the time when religion is treated like racism:

‘as time goes on, weirdly, I’m growing less liberal. I’m more like, ‘No, religion is ruining the world, you need to stop!’.

“… And you’re making everybody crazy!’. And you know, now America can’t have a president that doesn’t say he believes in God. So we’re f**ked!”

M Donnelly: When I think of the wonder of God, and the mismatch where people can think it is ‘ruining the world’ I realise even more what a huge job we have before us.

There are over 300 phrases in the Bible that say “Have no fear! Do not be afraid!”
The list is provided by Dr Felix Just S.J.

“Have no fear! Do not be afraid!”
    by Felix Just, S.J., Ph.D.

The most commonly repeated phrase in the whole Bible, in both the Old Testament and the New Testament, is “Have no fear!” or “Do not be afraid!”

Another common theme is that people should “fear the Lord” or have “fear of the Lord” (see the second section below), but these ideas are not contradictory, when understood properly:

On the one hand, God tells us that we need not be afraid of any person, circumstance, or created thing. God loves us and cares for us; God is with us and protects us, even in times of suffering or hardship. God’s faithful love extends even beyond the limits of our mortal lives.
On the other hand, it is good to have an appropriate “fear” of God, but of God alone. This “fear” is not meant as a terrified expectation of punishment, but rather in the sense of a “reverential respect,” similar to but even greater than the respect we owe to persons in legitimate authority: parents, civic leaders, or religious leaders.

Chris O’Dowd? Who’s he? If I have to ask, he’s not a celebrity!

  • Religion is not ruining the world. It just no longer maps reality very well.

Chris O’ Dowd a comedian. Now I’ve heard it all. I’d hardly call him a Hollywood celebrity because of one film. Anyway, I wonder how Christopher (ha ha) and his atheist chums are making the world a better place?

    Dear All ,
Never heard of him.A piece of dust.1.2 Billion Catholics might disagree with him as well.
Those regimes that tried to ban the Christian religion have been spectacular failures-Soviet Communism 72 years …Nazi Germany a mere 988 years short of the Third Reich.
    Man’s a fool.

Should I know of ‘Chris O’Dowd’?

Some years ago, I went into my sons’ primary school to object that they had been taken to watch a film based on a book by Philip Pullman. He is a children’s author who has expressed his desire to “kill God”. I stated that as a Catholic school this was unacceptable.

The Headmaster of course denied any prior knowledge of this and promised that he would be more careful in future.

We must start to take the world back. We must stand against these people. I have never heard of this so-called celebrity but those of you who might be interested in whatever he happens to do should react to this. Avoid any contact. Write to his sponsors and others. You object to what he has said and will not be adding to their income

Imagine if every Catholic made this same statement. We need to work together.

Thats made me very sad. I love Chris O’Dowd, and its upset me so much to read what he said. Pray for him.

In an odd sense, I’m grateful for O’Dowd, because he’s tipping his hand and confirming what many of us have suspected for a long time. Namely, that the New Atheism is indistinguishable from Political Correctness. And if there is one thing we’ve learned about PC, it’s that it isn’t tolerant or “live and let live” at all. Never was and never will be.

Michael – Thank you for sharing this great resource.
We do have a mountain to climb and the world is truly in a bad state, but I am comforted that all around there are people who are not afraid to swim against the tide of secularism. In parishes, in St. Peters’ square — and I am sure the weekend of 27th April will be a great testament to Catholic Faith.
