Market cap, also known as market capitalization is the total market value of all of a company’s outstanding shares. It is also incorrectly known to some as what the company is really worth, or in other words the value of the business.

This video will teach you how to calculate market capitalization and what it means. Market Capitalization, or Market Cap for short is calculated by multiplying price per share and outstanding shares.
This video will also talk about how the market cap is not what a company is worth but merely what it would cost to buy 100% of the company's shares. It includes a Warren Buffett quote that is very applicable to this situation "Price is what you pay. Value is what you get" in this case, the price that is paid would be market cap and the value is the intrinsic value of the company.
Lastly this video talks about what Big Cap and Small Cap stocks are and how their association with risk is nonsense (in my opinion). Regardless of market cap, if an investor finds a company that is selling below its value, he/she should buy the company's shares.

Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events.
Our word of the day is “Market Capitalization”.
Market capitalization is the total dollar market value of the shares outstanding of a publicly traded company; it is equal to the share price times the number of shares outstanding. As outstanding stock is bought and sold in public markets, capitalization could be used as a proxy for the public opinion of a company's net worth and is a determining factor in some forms of stock valuation. The investment community uses this figure to determine a company's size, as opposed to sales or total asset figures.
If a company has 35 million shares outstanding, each with a market value of $100, the company's market capitalization is $3.5 billion
Company size is a basic determinant of asset allocation and risk-return parameters for stocks and stock mutual funds. The term should not be confused with a company's "capitalization," which is a financial statement term that refers to the sum of a company's shareholders' equity plus long-term debt.
The stocks of large, medium and small companies are referred to as large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap, respectively. Investment professionals differ on their exact definitions, but the current approximate categories of market capitalization are:
Large Cap: $10 billion plus and include the companies with the largest market capitalization.
Mid Cap: $2 billion to $10 billion
Small Cap: Less than $2 billion

Market capitalization
Market capitalization (market cap) is the total market value of the shares outstanding of a publicly traded company; it is equal to the share price times the number of shares outstanding. The total capitalization of stock markets or economic regions may be compared to other economic indicators. The total market capitalization of all publicly traded companies in the world was US$51.2 trillion in January 2007 and rose as high as US$57.5 trillion in May 2008 before dropping below US$50 trillion in August 2008 and slightly above US$40 trillion in September 2008.

Market cap is given by the formula 
, where MC is the market capitalization, N is the number of shares outstanding, and P is the current price per share.

Company size is a basic determinant of asset allocation and risk-return parameters for stocks and stock mutual funds. The term should not be confused with a company's "capitalization," which is a financial statement term that refers to the sum of a company's shareholders' equity plus long-term debt.
The stocks of large, medium and small companies are referred to as large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap, respectively. Investment professionals differ on their exact definitions, but the current approximate categories of market capitalization are:
Large Cap: $10 billion plus and include the companies with the largest market capitalization.
Mid Cap: $2 billion to $10 billion
Small Cap: Less than $2 billion

The first index is a price-weighted index, which rises, due to the disproportionate effect of large share price changes in small companies.
