Kathmandu(/ˌkɑːtmɑːnˈduː/;Nepali pronunciation: [kɑʈʰmɑɳɖu]) is the capital and largest municipality of Nepal. It also hosts the headquarters of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). It is the only city of Nepal with the administrative status of Mahanagar (Metropolitan City), as compared to Upa-Mahanagar (Sub-Metropolitan City) or Nagar (City). Kathmandu is the core of Nepal's largest urban agglomeration located in the Kathmandu Valley consisting of Lalitpur, Kirtipur, Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur and a number of smaller communities. Kathmandu is also known informally as "KTM" or the "tri-city". According to the 2011 census, Kathmandu Metropolitan City has a population of 975,453 and measures 49.45 square kilometres (19.09 sq mi).
The city stands at an elevation of approximately 1,400 metres (4,600 ft) in the bowl-shaped Kathmandu Valley of central Nepal. It is surrounded by four major hills: Shivapuri, Phulchoki, Nagarjun, and Chandragiri. Kathmandu Valley is part of three districts (Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur), has the highest population density in the country, and is home to about a twelfth of Nepal's population.

Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, where people having high ambitions come from different parts of the country in search of better opportunities, is greatly influenced by the modern technological advancement as many other cities of the world. Because of the unanticipated developments in science and technology in the world in general, there is a great need for the young people in each society to keep abreast with the changing trends. But, why are some youngsters worried and aimless? Is it due to the lack of opportunities? Is it due to modernization? Is it due to the generation gap? Is it due to the tough competition? Is it due to the lack of access? Whatever are the reasons - smoking, drinking, drugs, sex, discos and parties are not the solutions of life, even though they entangle int...
See Kathmandu the way it really is - completely unscripted and raw! The people of Nepal are some of the most real people you will ever meet. We just recorded some of what we saw so we could share this with all of you... If you want to get an idea of what the real city of Kathmandu is like, this video should give you a pretty fair cross section - from the touristy shopping areas to the REAL communities. This video starts out on the rooftops, where the Nepalese relax in the warm sun on Saturday afternoons. The streets of Thamel market are a delight to explore, a great place to buy exotic (yet unbelievably affordable) Asian fabrics for your sister or wife. Durbar square in Basantapur is a prime hang out spot for locals and tourists alike. Food is great and is a great value. Be prep...
48 hours in Nepal: Video Guide to Kathmandu We’re just back from our 48 hours in Nepal trip, and what a beautiful surprise! It was my first time ever while Jeff has been several times, and I absolutely fell in love with the colours, the smells, the people and even the incessant horn honking noises. A beautiful country located only a 5 hour flight from Dubai, Nepal is usually visited for more than a short weekend, but what can you do when you work full-time! Home of the beautiful Himalayas and iconic Everest and Anapurna, Nepal is also worth the visit for less adventurous people, and Kathmandu is really one to see. Hiking, white water rafting, yoga retreats and trekking are also possible closer to the capital, so depending on your taste, you can make your 48 hours in Nepal more cultura...

Travel video about destination Kathmandu in Nepal. Kathmandu is a metropolis in the heart of the kingdom of Nepal, a land of snow-white mountains and home of the gods. For many centuries, this was the centre of Buddhist power and culture and it is here that the largest number of temples is found, dedicated to numerous deities. In the heart of the city is Durbar Square, in which the country's royalty resided until 1908 and where the most important festivals take place. Jagannath is one of the oldest temples on the square and the original building dates back to 1560, as does the adjacent Taleju Temple. The Shiva Parvati Temple was built in the early years of the Shah Dynasty. Its five-sectioned portal-like frame features text that is believed to be ancient Nepalese writing. Kumari Chowk i...

Travel video about destination Kathmandy Valley in Nepal. Rising to a height of 1,300 metres, Kathmandu Valley lies at the foot of the Himalayas in the centre of the kingdom of Nepal, a city of temples and gods that was founded in the 10th century by King Gunakamadeva. For those of the Hindu faith, the temple area of Pashupatinath is the most holy place in Nepal and is an ancient place of worship for the god, Shiva. Established in the 12th century, Bhaktapur, the “City Of The Devoted”, was until the end of the 15th century the capital of Kathmandu Valley. Located on a hill 3 kilometres to the west of Kathmandu is the valley’s main landmark, the Holy Stupa of Swayambhunath. Kathmandu, the Valley of the Gods - even today the region’s numerous temples, sanctuaries and shrines reflect the deeply held religious belief of the Nepalese people. For many centuries Kathmandu Valley, a fertile plain situated between Tibet and India, was an important junction for various trading and pilgrimage routes. For almost six hundred years the Malla Dynasty influenced the history of Nepal prior to the time when the Gorkha prince, Prithvis Narayan Shah, successfully conquered Kathmandu in 1768 followed by the additional royal cities of Bhaktapur and Patan. According to legend the foundation stone of Patan, formerly Lalitpur, was laid in 233 B.C. by the North Indian king, Ashoka, and his daughter, Carumati. Situated west of Kathmandu, Swayambhunath is one of the country’s most im...

The sun has sunk and the miraculous beauty of the moon is about to get showcased. Roads are full of vehicles and streets are crowded with people rushing to return to their homes after work; with tired minds, hungry stomachs and only one thought in their psyche: reach home as soon as possible. Yes, it is the dusk I am talking about! Popularized as the rims of tiredness, period of frustration and the busiest time of the day, Dusk is commonly known as ‘Office time’ is our country. It is the same dusk which comes every day and hides with every dark night. This is the time when many postpone their works for the next day. But for a few, it is the start of their day. There are many businesses whose transactions start at dusk. However, each dusk reminds me of the street vendors selling street food...
