An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is an encrypted machine image of a specific computer running an operating system, configured in a specific way, and can also contain a set of applications and services for accomplishing a specific purpose. An AMI contains all the information necessary to start up and run the software on the image. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the computing environment for running instances of an AMI.
AWS CloudFormation gives developers and system administrators an easy way to create and manage a collection of related AWS resources. The CloudFormation stack associated with this product will launch an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) with the software and configure related resources, such as Elastic IPs, VPCs, and security groups.

Amazon EC2 running SUSE® Linux Enterprise Server 11 from SUSE is a proven platform for development, test, and production workloads. With more than 6,000 certified applications from over 1,500 independent software vendors, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is a versatile Linux platform that provides superior reliability and security. This offering comes with automatic maintenance that keeps the operating system up-to-date with SUSE's most current security patches, bug fixes and new features to deliver peak performance. This image uses 64-bit architecture, and HVM based virtualization for use with Amazon EC2 Cluster Compute and Cluster GPU instances. The Nvidia driver installs automatically during startup on Cluster GPU instances.

Usage Instructions
There are two ways that you can configure a system to run SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. The first is to boot an instance running SUSE Linux in Amazon EC2. Once your image is running, you can use all of the standard SUSE tools including YaST and zypper to add packages and configure the system.
Another approach is to use SUSE Studio to configure a specific image that starts with SUSE JeOS (just enough operating system) and adds only those packages required to handle a specific workload. Among the variety of physical and virtual image types that SUSE Studio can build is the ability to create Amazon EC2 images, upload them to your EC2 account, and automatically launch them.
