The NASDAQ Stock Market (i/ˈnæzˌdæk/), commonly known as the NASDAQ (currently stylized as Nasdaq), is an American stock exchange. It is the second-largest exchange in the world by market capitalization, behind only the New York Stock Exchange. The exchange platform is owned by The NASDAQ OMX Group, which also owns the OMX stock market network and several other US stock and options exchanges.
In 1972, NASDAQ stood for National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations. NASDAQ was founded in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), which divested itself of NASDAQ in a series of sales in 2000 and 2001. NASDAQ is owned and operated by The NASDAQ OMX Group, the stocks of which were listed on its own stock exchange beginning July 2, 2002, under the ticker symbol NDAQ.
When the NASDAQ began trading on February 8, 1971, it was the world's first electronic stock market. At first, it was merely a quotation system and did not provide a way to perform electronic trades. The NASDAQ helped lower the spread (the difference between the bid price and the ask price of the stock) but was unpopular among brokerages which made much of their money on the spread.

A day after the Federal Reserve stood pat on interest rates, on Thursday the Nasdaq hit a record intraday high amid broad gains in U.S. stocks. While the risks to economic outlook were roughly "balanced", the Fed maintained rates. Inflation has continued to run below its 2 percent target and members saw room for improvement in the labor market. The central bank slowed the pace of future hikes and cut its longer run interest rate forecast to 2.9 percent from 3 percent. A strong signal was sent, however, for a move by the end of this year. Ryan Larson, head of equity trading at RBC Global Asset Management in Chicago, said, "I think the market continues to be focused on the Fed pushing a hike for later as a good thing rather than bad." http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/RLd4zcXmIG...
Relief over the Federal Reserve's slow-and-steady rates plans fueled another day of gains. The Nasdaq clocked a record close for the second session in a row. March 3 -- Bloomberg’s Michael Regan compares today’s Nasdaq performance to fifteen years ago and reports on tech valuations. He speaks on “In The Loop.”
Stocks rallied Wednesday as the Nasdaq closed at a new record high after the Federal Reserve opted to leave interest rates unchanged but stressed that the case for a hike in rates has "strengthened." The Dow Jones industrial average rose 163.74 points, or 0.9%, to 18,293.70 after being up just 28 points before the Fed statement. The Standard & Poor's 500 stock index jumped 23.36 points, or 1.1%, to 2163.12. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite added 53.83 points, or 1%, to an all-time closing high of 5295.18. In its statement, the Fed said the "case for an increase in (short-term) rates has strengthened" but that the Fed "decided, for the time being, to wait for further evidence of continued progress toward its objectives" of full employment and inflation moving back up to its 2% target.
