Coal (from the Old English term col, which has meant "mineral of fossilized carbon" since the 13th century) is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock usually occurring in rock strata in layers or veins called coal beds or coal seams. The harder forms, such as anthracite coal, can be regarded as metamorphic rock because of later exposure to elevated temperature and pressure. Coal is composed primarily of carbon along with variable quantities of other elements, chiefly hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen.
Throughout history, coal has been used as an energy resource, primarily burned for the production of electricity and/or heat, and is also used for industrial purposes, such as refining metals. A fossil fuel, coal forms when dead plant matter is converted into peat, which in turn is converted into lignite, then sub-bituminous coal, after that bituminous coal, and lastly anthracite. This involves biological and geological processes that take place over a long period. The United States Energy Information Administration estimates coal reserves at 7011948000000000000♠948×109 short tons (860 Gt). One estimate for resources is 18,000 Gt.

The goal of coal mining is to obtain coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery. In Australia, "colliery" generally refers to an underground coal mine. Coal mining has had many developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunneling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyors, jacks and shearers.

The Rhineland region of Germany has more CO2 pollution than any part of Europe due to its many coal mines. That's why climate activists organized the largest protest against coal production that Germany has ever seen. To find out why we are still using such harmful energy sources, VICE Germany spoke with coal workers, environmentalists, and residents about climate goals, power plant technology, and a future without coal. We see entire towns and vast forests that have been evacuated to mine coal. Watch as we search for the truth about Germany's energy policy. A teary-eyed West Virginia coal worker confronted Hillary Clinton at a campaign event on Monday over the Democratic presidential candidate’s promises to dismantle the coal industry. Clinton offered a semi-apology to Bo Copley, a 39-year-old father who lost his job as a foreman in the struggling industry. But the former secretary of state also claimed that her anti-coal comments — which she made at a town hall event in March — were taken out of context. http://dailycaller.com/2016/05/02/laid-off-coal-worker-confronts-hillary-over-her-promise-to-eradicate-industry-video/ http://www.infowars.com/hillary-to-rebrand-herself-as-amnesty-candidate-on-cinco-de-mayo/ Help us spread the word about the liberty movement, we're reaching millions help us reach millions more. On September 27, 2016, a BNSF coal train passes the town of Agency, Iowa. There are a few things different with this train's power than most coal loads. Three locomotives are leading this unit freight train. Most coal loads have two units leading and one distributed power unit on the end. Also, the lead engine is an ES44C4, which are rarely assigned to coal drags. I think this is the first time I've seen one on a loaded coal train. Finally, this train doesn't have a DPU on the end. Most of the train's hopper cars are marked with either IESX or LNTX. Both reporting marks are owned by Alliant Energy. Engines: BNSF 8224 GE ES44C4 BNSF 8525 EMD SD70ACe BNSF 8459 EMD SD70ACe

At the Quecreek Mine in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, coal miners accidentally dug into the poorly documented Saxman Mine, causing 500 million tonnes of underground water to flood the Quecreek mine. All nine miners trapped by the water were eventually rescued.
Coal ash, which contains many of the world's worst carcinogens, is what's left over when coal is burnt for electricity. An estimated 113 million tons of coal ash are produced annually in the US, and stored in almost every state — some of it literally in people's backyards. With very little government oversight and few safeguards in place, toxic chemicals have been known to leak from these storage sites and into nearby communities, contaminating drinking water and making residents sick. VICE News travels across the US to meet the people and visit the areas most affected by this toxic waste stream. Since coal production is predicted to remain steady for the next few decades, coal ash will be a problem that will affect the US for years to come. Watch "Showdown in Coal Country" - http://bit....

You don't have to lie about where you've been.
We both know you've been schemin'.
So why don't you give your little voice a rest,
climb on up inside my bed, and just pretend you need me?
You don't have to lie about what you know.
We both know that I've been sufferin'.
And I don't need to be your only one,
and I don't need your comfortin',
I just need you with me.
(chorus)(Stay, Stay, Stay with me.
Stay, stay with me.
Stay, and don't you ever run away from me.)
Oh, and if she ever let's you down,
after she has run out of your money?
Well then just crawl on back to me, I'm the one that
sets you free, and I'm the one that needs you.
And if she ever let's you go,
we both know what you'll be needin'.
And if you need somewhere to rest,
somewhere to lay your
head, you'll know where to find me.
(chorus)
And if you need somewhere to rest,
somewhere to lay your head, you know where to find me.
Stay with me!
(this part repeats several times)
I can't live another day,
I won't live another day without you baby!
Stay with me!
Turn down the headlights. Empty the ashtrays.
Sweep out of the airway, what's left of our time.
Oh, you can use my body to
